3 A historical hotel Albert Edward of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, better known as King Edward VII, was the son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and was born on 9 November 1841 in Buckingham Palace. Edward VII was a great lover of Paris and was known in French society as Edouard VII. He was a refined and elegant man, and a great follower of fashion. It was to his special order that the three-piece suit constructed in a single fabric was created in Paris, and to this day the French refer to such attire as an Edouard VII. Paris offered him all that he could wish for, not only in the wealth of its cultural and artistic life but also its vibrant nightlife. Edward VII had lasting admiration for female singers and actresses: most famous among his many conquests were the talented French actress Sarah Bernhardt, the great Australian singer Helen Mitchell, better known as Nellie Melba, and the society hostess Alice Frederica Keppel. Alice Keppel was his favourite mistress, and their friendship lasted his whole life so strong was it that Queen Alexandra, Edward VII s wife, invited her to attend the King as he lay on his deathbed. Alice Keppel is also the maternal great grand mother of Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall. Late nineteenth-century France was a flamboyant period, filled with new discoveries and astonishing and unexpected changes in many fields, including fashion, architecture, travel and technology, and it was during this very period that the Edouard 7 hotel opened its doors for the first time. It was constructed in the Haussmann style of the neighbourhood, and appealed to the exuberant tastes of a wealthy clientele through the luxurious and elegant accommodation it offered. In 1877, Edward Prince of Wales, that lover of Paris and future king of the United Kingdom, made the hotel his Parisian base from which he could explore the city, admire the view from the balconies, keep up the social whirl at the Opéra Garnier and visit his aristocratic friends who lived in that area of the city. valeriehelene@vhtconseil.com 1/13

4 A unique concept: the Couture hotel The Edouard 7 was acquired by the Bessé Signature group in 2009 and has been re-launched as a 4-star Couture hotel. The hotel offers 69 bedrooms, including 7 suites and 3 junior suites on three Couture floors, and four Edouard 7 floors, each with splendidly bold decoration in a mix of nineteenth-century style with contemporary elements. Inspiration for this metamorphosis was drawn from the charismatic personality of its royal mentor who was in his time a paragon of elegance, an accomplished seducer and an avowed epicurean. 5 The universe portrayed by the Hôtel Edouard 7 Renovation of the Edouard 7 embraced an artistic concept unique in the world of hotel design: the overall theme is Couture, the universe of highest quality fashion. Each space in the hotel has been conceived as a silhouette, or mannequin, to be elegantly dressed in a manner that that one might expect after meticulous study of Edward VII s personality, life, history, travels, loves and, indeed, lovers. The driving force behind this creative concept came from an unexpected meeting of spirits of a man, Edward VII, and a woman, the milliner Marina Bessé. The entire project was based on 4 key words, inspired by the personality of Edward VII: BOLDNESS In the combination of two very different eras. SEDUCTION By the refinement and subtlety afforded to each bedroom and suite: everything has been created with meticulous detail. CHARACTER Through use of different colours, each bedroom and suite has its own individual and distinctive character. THEATRE With the richness of the materials and colours used. Christophe Daudré began the metamorphosis of the Edouard 7 in 2012 with a new collection of bedrooms in keeping with the Franco-British alliance so dear to Edward VII, mixing French contemporary elegance with a very British spirit. Influenced by the hotel s ideal location just a stone s throw from the Opéra Garnier, Christophe Daudré established a common thread to link modernity with traditional style by preserving the French elegance of the original Edouard 7 and combining it with contemporary design. The new collection of bedrooms is highlighted by decorative elements and modern materials which contribute significantly to the overall artistic layout of each space. Guests at the Edouard 7 step into a velvet-lined jewel case, a colourful, cosy and chic environment full of warmth in which each bedroom of this new collection is a real gem waiting to be discovered. 6 The Edouard 7 bedroom collection: The 42 bedrooms of the Edouard 7 collection occupy the first four floors of the hotel: 11 STANDARD BEDROOMS 13 SUPERIOR BEDROOMS 14 DELUXE BEDROOMS 1 JUNIOR SUITE 2 SUITES 1 SINGLE BEDROOM Each floor represents a precious stone. The first floor represents sapphire, with its bedrooms in shades of blue. The second floor represents emerald, with different nuances of green. The third floor represents ruby: here, the bedrooms are decorated in shades of red and deep pink. The fourth floor represents citrine, where golden yellows dominate. There, we find lace on some of the furnishings and paintings on the curtains which offer glimpses of both feminine and masculine takes on art; transparent materials such as glass, a deep blue niche here, poetic notes from the nineteenth century there... each of the rooms has a sense of something almost indiscreet about it, something naughty, something sensual. There is a feminine note in the design of the spaces and corners, like the walk-in dressing room, a coloured niche high on the wall, a translucent sliding door, each of which adds to the touch of impertinence that characterises the decoration of the Edouard 7. The mix of materials, such as seen in the padded wall and Christophe Daudré s highly stylish furniture creations, and the association of accessories such as the Prince of Wales chair, the Kashmir rugs and the poetic lines inscribed on the walls, together bring ingenious and subtle style to this new collection. valeriehelene@vhtconseil.com 4/13

8 The Couture bedroom collection The Couture collection covers the top three floors of the hotel, and its 27 bedrooms comprise: 7 STANDARD BEDROOMS 4 SUPERIOR BEDROOMS 9 DELUXE BEDROOMS 2 JUNIOR SUITES 5 SUITES These bedrooms have been designed like silhouettes, or mannequins, for dressing up, and are the work of milliner and stylist Marina Bessé. A variety of fabrics has been used in the decoration of the bedrooms, such as silk, leather and velvet, in every case following the four keywords of the hotel s identity. As with the Edouard 7 collection, the Couture bedrooms have been created to transport guests into a variety of ambiances: some bedrooms are in black and gold, some in petrol blue and taupe. Yet others are in red and black, green and black or shades of spice. In addition, 5 of the rooms (the junior suites and suites) bear the names of Edward VII s former mistresses - Melba, Alexandra, Lily, Sarah and Alice. valeriehelene@vhtconseil.com 6/13

10 The Restaurant: La Cuisine de l E7 La Cuisine de l E7 is in an attractive circular room which looks out onto the Avenue de l Opéra. Light and subtle contemporary and traditional cuisine is offered throughout the year, as well as an express menu for business clients of the area around the Opéra. The Bar TAPAS : the Découverte du monde (World discovery) tapas menu is available at the bar all day and is ideal for sharing among family, friends or lovers, perhaps accompanied by an alcoholic or alcohol-free cocktail made by our chef barman COCKTAILS : in the hotel bar, clients may also enjoy delicious cocktails created by our head barman, a cup of hot chocolate or coffee in winter, or perhaps an iced tea in summer. The bar is a welcoming spot throughout the seasons, where warm, sensual colours create an intimate ambiance that takes you back to the era of Edward VII. 12 The women behind the Edouard 7 ANNE JOUSSE, is president of the Bessé Signature hotel group and a member of the owning family. For more than 20 years she was an insurance broker for major French industrial groups and at the same time a Judge at the commercial court (and, incidentally, one of its youngest ever members), before taking up the hotel business in 2003; She transformed the Domaine de la Bretesche (in Brittany - a property bought by her father on love at first sight, into a luxurious and charming resort with a starred restaurant, magnificent private salons and one of the finest golf courses in the west of France. Also in 2003, she encouraged her family to buy the now well-known Hôtel Bel-Ami ( which had attracted her by its ideal location in the heart of Saint- Germain-des-Prés, in Paris. A further dream location was the Hôtel Edouard 7, which she has remodelled in a fashion that combines history (that of Edward VII of the United Kingdom) and the flamboyant luxury of the Haussmann era, yet which entirely caters for the needs of the twenty-first century. In June 2010, the group acquired the Hôtel de Sers ( a 5-star baby palace just off the Champs Elysées. These hotels form the backbone of the new Bessé Signature group, whose philosophy is to provide hôtels dans l air du temps hotels in the spirit of our times. Anne Jousse plans to develop the group through cultivating the personality of each establishment and a spirit that comes from family ownership, which for her is a determining factor in offering her clients the very best quality of service: this has been her guiding principle since the start of her career in insurance. Most recently, in December 2012, the group acquired the Hôtel Vernet ( in Rue Vernet, close to the Hôtel de Sers and to the Champs-Elysées. Following major restoration work, the Vernet opened its doors to guests in March JENNIFER BOCCARA After gaining valuable experience as the commercial and marketing director of the Hotel Warwick Champs-Elysées, with the group Hôtels et Résidences du Roy (Hotel California and Royal Hôtel in Paris), and later at the Concorde Lafayette, Jennifer Boccara became general director of the Hôtel de la Paix in Geneva, which had then been taken over by the Concorde Hotels group. She was director general of the Hôtel de Sers, the baby palace of the Bessé Signature group, from 2004 until December 2012, when she was appointed director general of the Edouard 7.
