What kind of food best describes Seinäjoki? To me, Seinäjoki isn t any traditional dish, but the Herkkupala (gourmet snack) burgers, a Seinäjoki specialty containing ham, cream cheese, egg and roe paste. I ve heard they even sell it at a grill in Tampere under the name Seinäjokelainen. 2. What would your Seinäjoki menu include? A Seinäjoki menu should be influenced by the surrounding area: locally produced fish, meat and vegetables to create a robust and filling menu honoring South Ostrobothnian traditions. I would definitely make a modern version of the sour milk gruel for dessert. 3. Not taking into account your own home, where would you take your guests for a meal? Restaurant Juurella offers dishes prepared with love. They use local produce inventively, too. The atmosphere and relaxed service are also praiseworthy there. 4. Where do you most enjoy spending time in Seinäjoki? In my spare time I enjoy the outdoor running tracks, the forest, cliffs and lean-tos by Jouppilanvuori hill. I also like to bike along the river bank. 5. What about any hidden gems? The mental landscape of South Ostrobothnia, the rural plains stretching to the horizon, is a specialty not to be forgotten. Experience the plains along biking and canoeing trails, or by horse riding. 4 5

Finish the sentence: Seinäjoki is a place where you will find the best conditions for my own sport in all of Finland. 2. You are a speed skater, but what team do you support in Seinäjoki? The floorball team SPV, the ruling Finnish champions. From the team sports played in Seinäjoki, I ve been to their games the most. 3. What kind of sports would you like yet to try? American football and speedway. Seinäjoki Crocodiles are in the Finnish championship league. You will also find a speedway course here. 4. Where will you find the best terrains in Seinäjoki? In winter, the best terrain would be the ice sport centre rink. The slope at Joupiska is also long and steep enough for uphill running. I ve never made fun of Seinäjoki, but some tales I tell take place here. My home town is close at heart, and it isn t my style to mock it. 2. Is there such a thing as Ostrobothnian humor? I d like to think that Ostrobothnians recognize authenticity quicker than the rest. You can say anything in front of an Ostrobothnian, as long as you don t mock them. And if you do, mock yourself. This goes for everyone, but it s even clearer in South Ostrobothnia. 3. What do you miss about Seinäjoki? I miss the short distances, and my mother declaring such a traffic jam! when there are four cars in line. I miss the spinach pancakes and minced meat gravy from my old school, accompanied by three cans of milk. Oh my. The Provinssi Festival is full of feel good! I miss feeling carefree and the notion that it s easy to make things happen in Seinäjoki. 4. What would you like to show your guests in Seinäjoki? I always take visitors here and there, telling them things that happened when I was at school. My pride and joy is the yard at our house. And I love the Provinssi Festival. 5. Finish the sentence: The Ostrobothnian mental landscape is like milk from local free-range cows. At first you think, what on earth, but then you have to take a second sip. The Ostrobothnian mental landscape is like a field of grain: At the end of the summer it s glowing in the sunlight. Then someone runs it down, but in spring it starts to grow again The Ostrobothnian mental landscape is like a painting by the Ostrobothnian artist Juhani Palmu; it doesn t matter what is going on around you or what other people think, it s simply larger than life! 1. You are from eastern Finland, did you know South Ostrobothnia before you came here? I ve (Santeri) lived in Kauhajoki for a while when I was little. Most of my relatives still live there. South Ostrobothnia is a lovely place to chill out! 2. What is required to make a great video clip? A great video requires a brilliant idea. To get there you need a clear vision for the outcome, the ability to let go during filming, and enjoy what you re doing! Our work requires skills, creativity and a you only live once attitude. When we re working, we lay it all out there, because it s all about the shot. 3. What could South Ostrobothians learn from Savonians, and the other way around? Well, I seriously hope it s not the Savonian dialect. I don t know if Savonians know much else. We could learn how to be larger than life. 4. When our summer job ends we ll... be even more crazy and hungry for more adventures! 6 7

8 Sleep tight Would you like to stay in an atmospheric historical setting, or do you prefer the modern and avant-garde? 9 The tower hotel will be completed in July Hotel-restaurant Alma The building of the railroad workers from 1909 was restored as a private hotel restaurant in 2006, helping to preserve an important part of the history of Seinäjoki. What was an important meeting point of Seinäjoki was once more given new life as a venue for parties, conferences and gatherings. The new hotel was built to suit the older restaurant s style and atmosphere. The twenty unique and spacious rooms are partly decorated with antique pieces, yet adding modern comfort. There are single and double rooms available with extra beds as well as two gorgeous suites with jacuzzis and saunas. Each room has been named after the old steam locomotives, including Ukko-Pekka, Lankkihattu and Amerikan Iita. All rooms are equipped with mini bar, WiFi, ironing board and iron, TV, radio, bathrobes, slippers and a long shoehorn. The room charge includes parking, use of the sauna and breakfast. Breakfast is served in the stunning six-meter-high Art Noveau hall, where you can also enjoy lunch or dinner or arrange parties and conferences. Welcome! 18 Hotel-Restaurant Alma Ruukintie 4, Seinäjoki phone +358 (0) Spend a night at the water tower Seinäjoki, which has grown along the railroad, will get its very own tower hotel in July 2015, when Hotel-Restaurant Alma expands. The massive 18-meter water tower which provided water for the steam locomotives from 1926 to the 1960s, and has been unused ever since, will be restored as hotel rooms. The building which was originally constructed to contain two water tanks of fifty cubic meters will come to life after decades of retirement. The water tower has five floors. The second to third floor will have a total of six double rooms with king size beds. On the top floor there is a more than sixty square meter large suite with sauna and jacuzzi. A new tower part has been added for stairs and an elevator, so that the entire water tower can be used for the rooms. The rooms have been decorated to represent the life of the railroad workers during the first half of the 20th century. The unique artworks made to order reflect the period of the railroad and nearly cover one wall, revealing the bricks in the other walls. Under the ceiling of some rooms there are even railroad tracks installed. The interior fitting, relaxed atmosphere and good working conditions in the rooms guarantee you will enjoy your stay in this completely different hotel. 10 Sensations for all senses Why not begin your visit to Seinäjoki by ascending the tower of the Lakeuden Risti Church and admire the flat lands stretching out around you. Architect Alvar Aalto has designed this remarkable landmark. Lakeuden Risti is a part of the Aalto Centre group consisting of six buildings. Aalto s signature is visible even in the smaller design details door handles, lighting fixtures and furniture have been designed uniquely for each building. Go for a picnic in the Törnävä mansion park or on campus by the river bank. In summer, get to see Seinäjoki from the river! Hop on a river cruise provided by Kaanaa Lines. 11 The Aalto Centre In Seinäjoki city centre you can dive deep into modern Finnish architecture and acquaint yourself with the creations of Alvar Aalto. The Aalto Centre in Seinäjoki is a truly unique architectural unity on an international scale. The six buildings included are the city hall, the library, the theatre, the government office, the Lakeuden Risti Church and the parish centre. From the civic square you can admire the staple of Lakeuden Risti which has become the most renowned landmark in the city. Kari Heiskanen actor, director Seinäjoki Theatre Seinäjoki Theatre is one of the significant venues for artistic entertainment in the region. The theatre interprets the local consciousness and through its modern classics opens doors to the mental and physical world. Over the year from September to May, the theatre gives approximately 250 performances on four stages (in Finnish). 21 Seinäjoki Theatre Alvar Aallon katu 12, Seinäjoki phone +358 (0) The Aalto library and Apila The Aalto library went into bloom once again, when it reopened after a complete restoration in spring The restoration was thorough, respecting the signature of Aalto in countless details, but also keeping in mind the needs of the customers and modern library technology. Next door to the Aalto library lies the Apila library designed by the JKMM architects. The building was nominated for the Finlandia Prize for Architecture. The library, which is known for its bold design, has become a meeting place and public living room for the people in the city. Seinäjoki city orchestra Seinäjoki city orchestra has a permanent string quintet and a brass quintet. The orchestra is about to expand to a symphony orchestra. The main concert venue of the orchestra is the Seinäjoki hall. Apart from classical music, the current programme also includes influences from other genres: the orchestra pulls off a decent tango and lets loose with some swing. 12 Provincial museum of South Ostrobothnia Get to know the history of Seinäjoki and South Ostrobothnia at the Törnävä museum area and the Provincial museum of South Ostrobothnia as well as the new Keidas nature museum. The history of the Defence Corps and the Lotta Svärd organization is presented in the newly restored museum designed by Alvar Aalto in the 1920s. The Defence Corps and Lotta Svärd museum is located in the heart of Seinäjoki at the address Kauppakatu 17. The Varikko gallery Varikko ry is a collective of visual artists, maintaining an art gallery and ateliers for artists in Seinäjoki city centre. The Varikko was built in 2000 by eight female artists and other helping hands in the storage room of the old locomotive garage. The Varikko supports young artists from Ostrobothnia through invitation exhibitions, participates in international culture exchanges and promotes experimental visual art. Currently, seven visual artists representing different genres work at the Varikko. One could almost say that a river cruise is a must for both visitors and locals. The boat can also be booked for private events: surprise the birthday girl or boy with their own cruise with coffee and cake, combine a cruise with dinner in a genuine Ostrobothnian house, or take your colleagues for a wellness at work cruise and enjoy the nature at Paukaneva. Seinäjoki art hall Seinäjoki art hall displays modern art and offers an event centre for visual art. The art hall is located in the vicinity of Seinäjoki city centre, about half a kilometer from the Aalto Centre. In addition to the exhibitions, the hall offers workshops and different events. There is a café, a shop and the Seinäjoki art lending service, from which you can rent art for your own home at a small monthly fee, or purchase them on down payment. 13 Seinäjoki summer theatre Duudsonit Activity Park In summer 2015 Seinäjoki summer theatre presents the musical The Beauty and the Beast (in Finnish). The theatre is located on the scenic island of Törnävä. There are 700 seats in the covered stand. There are refreshments and you can order a meal at the buffet. The nostalgic dancing pavilion serves as a restaurant. Tickets and reservations: South Ostrobothnia Tourist Service. The indoor activity park filled with explosive Dudeson energy gets even the most notorious slacker going. Jump from giant trampolines into the foam pool. In Seinäjoki traffic park, children under 12 years are invited to learn the traffic rules safely from behind the wheel of a pedal car. During the open hours of the park, the youngsters get to practice their skills on tricycles and kick mopeds. Sometimes they can use their own bikes. The instructors in the park keep traffic park driving schools, in which the kids can take a driving license. There are numerous fashion shops for women, men and children, as well as cafés and restaurants, offering many opportunities for shopping and leisure. All five shopping centres are located within walking distance of each other. Seinäjoen Torikeskus is a meeting place for the people in the city and one of the larger shopping centres in the region. The restaurants and cafés serve tasty treats ranging from burgers to mouth-watering pastries. Shop for fashion, accessories, shoes and cosmetics. Kauppakeskus Epstori is also a popular place to meet. In addition to the cafés and shops, you will find a book shop, an optician and an on duty pharmacy. In Mega-keskus you will find fashion, cosmetics and expert service. The shopping centre is centrally located and has large parking areas. Kauppakeskus Lehtinen has been serving customers for over 70 years. Here you can find an organic shop, a dry cleaner, a shoemaker, the only lingerie boutique in the city centre and much more.
