Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Advisory Committee (Exhibit 1) Thom Kieft reported that Dr. Perez sent the attached QEP report and will be presenting on the transformational effects the QEP has on faculty at the Assessment Meeting in early June and SACS in December. Old Business Proposal request for additional programs to go over 50% online was signed and approved by Cabinet on May 1, Proposal & 6-presented last month will be forwarded to Cabinet after today s meeting. New Business 1. Proposal Office Administration Program Review Presentation and Recommendations Office Administration Program Review (Exhibit 2) Reviewer: Mary Heikkinen Lead Reader: Claire Brady Co-Reader: Jane Scott Mary Heikkinen presented her recommendations and overview for the Office Administration Program. The program s primary focus is for students to develop quality office skills and obtain entry level employment in various business fields and for those students already employed to be able to advance in their present careers. There are three specializations and a technical certificate offered within this program. Articulation Agreements are with Lake Tech and the high schools Career Pathways Network (formerly Tech Prep). Ten different office administration courses are offered that serve students of other programs school-wide. Although there is modest enrollment in the program, there is a strong student demand for these courses college-wide. It was noted the program has an overall male/female ratio of 1 in 8 which is normal for this type of program. Additionally, current program lab fees pay for most if not all of classroom expenditures and grant funds are used to pay for classroom equipment. Office Administration courses have established program level student learning outcomes Page 2 of 5
4 (SLOs) with some overlap noted among program specializations. Finally, based on a mandate by the state, it is proposed to 1) Delete the Office Administration Associate in Applied Science Degree and related Technical Certificate in Medical Office Management. Develop and implement a plan to enable students currently enrolled to either complete the deleted degree or certificate within three years of program deletion or to choose a new academic program. 2) Determine whether or not an Associate in Science in Office Administration and/or related Technical Certificate(s) are in demand in the College s Service District. If demand is indicated, develop and implement program(s). 3) Increase assessment of Student Learning Outcomes at both the course and program level. Use findings to continuously improve student mastery of PSLOs and SLOs. And 4) Become more proactive regarding promotion of Office Administration program(s) and courses. The Reader s Report prepared by Claire Brady and Jane Scott was summarized by Claire Brady. This program contributes to the institution through a wide variety of courses. What was interesting was the number and diversity of ways this program measures student outcomes and how assessment is used to improve instruction. There were significant examples within the program review on how that goal was being accomplished. The program s strength is its ability to adapt to changes in technology, workforce demands and state mandates. There are substantive issues with success rates on the fully online courses and steps are being taken to modify and address those issues. The Readers are fully in support of these recommendations and as LSCC looks at whether or not to offer an Associate in Science in Office Administration, it was stated to please remember to focus on some of the retention issues and how this would be tracked and monitored. A higher number of program level SLO s across all these specializations or a ratio that is more comparable to one another and the market plan should not only focus on the program, but on the individual courses and the accompanying skills as they make a significant contribution to our institution. Jane Scott commended Mary Heikkinen on her program presentation and the program s responsiveness to surveys and incorporating those changes. Mary Heikkinen responded by thanking the Readers for their input. Thom Kieft requested a correction on Recommendation #3 for the time frame to be changed from Spring 2012 to Spring Jeremy Norton asked if the computer proficiency requirement is going to be addressed in the program review. After a lengthy discussion, it was decided to revisit the proficiency discussion in the future once computer literacy guidelines can be clarified. Jeremy Norton motioned and Dr. Hicks seconded for Proposal to be approved as written. By consensus, the motion was approved. Page 3 of 5
5 2. Proposal Nursing Program Review Presentation and Recommendations Nursing Program Review (Exhibit 3) Reviewer: Diane Litten Lead Reader: Dr. Kristy Lisle Co-Reader: Marion Kane Diane Litten began her presentation on the history of the LSCC nursing program along with its development, growth and service to the community. The following recommendations were presented: 1) Determine if a summer workshop will increase retention in semester one of General Track program. 2) Determine if summer enhancement will increase retention in semester three of General Track program. 3) Increase male gender and multi-cultural diversity among faculty/clinical adjuncts. 4) Develop strategies to improve completion rates for males, Blacks, Hispanics and Asians. 5) Improve data reporting though continuous improvement data cycles. 6) Equitable skills and simulation facilities available for students on the South Lake campus. 7) Hire a certified simulation faculty to champion simulation and incorporate simulation across the curriculum. 8) Provide consistent maintenance schedule for current technology and seek funding to keep current with best practices for simulation technology on the Leesburg and South Lake campus. The Reader s Report prepared by Dr. Kristy Lisle and Marion Kane was summarized by Marion Kane. Overall the goals and objectives of this program consistently outperform in this highly regulated field of study. The Nursing program has received many certifications and has been recognized on a national level which consistently speaks to the quality of this program. The numerous evaluation tools being incorporated contribute to the quality of this program s success. There were also numerous service examples of faculty and staff going above and beyond so students could flourish and succeed. The program has the capacity for 120 students, but physical limitations prevent the program from serving at capacity. Since there is demand, efforts/plans should be made/considered to work towards increasing enrollment to capacity. One enhancement to the program would be to offer more online and/or hybrid courses. Faculty diversity efforts are being made, but it is an ongoing challenge. Other ideas to support diversity within the program include mentoring, incorporating other professionals within the industry, and including alumni to return to offer their support, guidance and inspiration. Dr. Lisle would like to see better coordination among the separate data bases and commended Diane Litten on her courageous action to thoroughly explore any areas that demonstrated weakness and determination to make Page 4 of 5
6 improvements. The program is definitely focused on student success and the job placement rates are impressive. Dr. Howard commended Nursing faculty for the quality of their work. She stated how this program also supports other disciplines at the college prior to entering the nursing programs. It is a good model in implementing a successful learning community environment. Diane Litten thanked Dr. Lisle, Marion Kane, Claire Brady, Sybil Brown, Beth Skipper for all their contributions and Dr. Litten for editing. Bonnie Holloway motioned and Jane Scott seconded for Proposal to be approved as written. By consensus, the motion was approved Department Reports: No department reports to discuss. Other Considerations & Adjournment: A special Teaching and Learning Committee open forum will be scheduled sometime in June 2012 to review the Villages Prospectus with Dr. Mojock. Thom Kieft mentioned he is looking forward next year to more discussions regarding computer proficiency, credentialing for CGS 1530, and thanked everyone for their hard work this past year. There being no further business, Thom Kieft adjourned the meeting at 3:10 p.m. Minutes Submitted by: K. Kidd Page 5 of 5
