Both programs are designed to help students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to wk in computer technical suppt positions and prepare f industry certification exams. Additionally, the CNSA program offers an A.S. Degree which meets the transfer requirements f CSUMB, Certificate of Achievements and skills certificates. The CSS program offers an A.S. Degree, a Certificate of Achievement, and skills certificates. Please refer to the CNSA and CSS programs f details. Degree The Computer Netwking and System program is intended to prepare students to wk in the Infmation Technology (IT) industry in general, and me specifically in computer netwking and system administration. Courses include the underlying netwking concepts and they, administering the netwk infrastructure including the Cisco Systems CCNA/CCNP courses, system and netwk administration using UNIX/Linux and Microsoft operating systems, netwk security, netwk management, and emerging technologies. Various certificates and degree options are available, including courses that transfer to four-year universities f those students pursuing a Bachel's Degree. Degree The Computer Suppt program is designed to help students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to wk in computer technical suppt positions and prepare f industry certification exams. Students will be able to provide technical suppt, troubleshooting, training, and documentation to internal and external customers. Courses include computer hardware, operating systems, common software utilities, fundamentals of netwking, and help desk concepts. An Associate in Science Degree, a Certificate of Achievement, and Skills Certificates are available in the areas of CompTIA A+ Preparation, and Computer Suppt Technician 1. 6 CIS 90 Introduction to UNIX/Linux Prerequisite: CIS 72. Provides a technical overview of the UNIX/Linux operating system, including hands-on experience with commands, files, and tools. Topics include basic UNIX/Linux commands, files and directies, text editing, electronic mail, pipes and filters, X Windows, shell environments, and scripting. Required f students wishing to pursue the UNIX/Linux track leading to industry certification. May be offered in a Distance- Transfer Credit: Transfers to CSU; UC, pending review. CIS 98 UNIX/Linux Shell Programming Prerequisite: CIS 90. Presents an introduction to shell programming in a UNIX/Linux environment, and is designed f system administrats technical users with little no programming background. Topics include use of a text edit, the features of the Bash shell, variables, control structures, functions, signal handling, string manipulation, file access, and basic programming style. May be offered in a Distance- Transfer Credit: Transfers to CSU; UC, pending review. CIS 103 Technical Suppt as a Profession Prerequisite: CIS 70 and CIS 72 equivalent skills. Teaches technical suppt skills f those seeking employment in the computer and infmation systems field. Includes training in the various means of delivering technical suppt and tools f gathering, ganizing and disseminating technical infmation, and help desk ganization. Prepares students to provide technical assistance and training to computer users. May be offered in a Distance- CIS 140NA Netwk Analysis using Wireshark Prerequisite: CIS 82 CIS 83. Teaches practical netwk management skills using the Wireshark netwk analyzer. Provides a logical troubleshooting approach to capturing and analyzing data frames. Teaches to effectively troubleshoot, maintain, optimize, and monit netwk traffic. May be offered in a Distance- CIS 140SM Infmation Stage Management Prerequisite: CIS 72 CIS 81. Covers basic principles of infmation stage and management. Includes imptant segments of infmation stage technology such as sting, managing, netwking, accessing, protecting, securing, sharing, and optimizing infmation. May be offered in a Distance- CIS 144 Introduction to Managing and Securing a Web Server Prerequisite: CIS 90. Teaches installing, configuring, managing, and securing Apache web server. Covers web-server basics, server-side programming, log files, robots, netwk security, web-server security, CGI security, web-client security, and secure online transactions. May be offered in a Distance- CIS 116 IPv6 Fundamentals 3 units; 2 hours Lecture, 1 hour Labaty Prerequisite: CIS 81. Recommended Preparation: CIS 82; Eligibility f ENGL 100 and READ 100. Introduces IPv6 addressing and address types, dynamic IPv6 address assignment using SLAAC and DHCPv6, ICMPv6 Neighb Discovery, routing IPv6, and securing an IPv6 netwk. 7 CIS 154 Intro. to Client/Server Relational Database Management Systems Teaches the the use and administration of a Client/Server Relational Database Management System. Covers the installation and administration of MySQL Client/Server Relational Database Management Installation along with the design, creation and administration of enterprise databases, perfmance tuning, security, and disaster recovery. Additional topics include: SQL (Structured Query Language), data types, functions, nmalization, and a brief introduction to server-level programming and language interfaces f developing databasedriven websites, emphasizing PHP systems. May be offered in a Distance- CIS 160A Z Special Topics in Computer and Infmation Systems units; hours Lecture, hours Labaty Investigates special selected areas of interest in Computer and Infmation Systems not covered by regular catalog offerings. The special areas will be announced, described, and given their own titles and letter designations in the Schedule of Classes. CIS 174 Virtualization Infrastructure (VMware ICM) Prerequisite: CIS 72 and CIS 81. Recommended Preparation: CIS 70; Eligibility f ENGL 100 and READ 100; Eligibility f MATH 154. Teaches installation, configuration, and management of virtual infrastructure. Covers virtualization of hardware, computing systems, and applications. Uses VMware Install, Configure, Manage curriculum. May be offered in a Distance- CIS 175 Fundamentals of Computer Security Recommended Preparation: CIS 72 equivalent knowledge; Eligibility f ENGL 100 and READ 100. Introduces the threats and vulnerabilities of computer systems, and helps prepare f security-related industry certifications such as CompTIA Security+. Topics will include intrusion detection, intrusion prevention, encryption, VPNs, authentication, and implementing security procedures. Treats security not simply as a product to be installed, but as a way of thinking about all aspects of an ganization's security needs. May be offered in a Distance- CIS 185 Advanced Routing Cisco CCNP ROUTE Prerequisite: CIS 82 equivalent knowledge. Teaches implementing, moniting, and maintaining routing services in an enterprise netwk. Covers planning, configuring, and verifying the implementation of complex enterprise LAN and WAN routing solutions, using a range of routing protocols in IPv4 and IPv6 environments. Also covers secure routing solutions f suppting branch offices and mobile wkers. One of three Cisco CCNP (Cisco Certified Netwking Professional) courses. Prepares students f the CCNP ROUTE exam. May be offered in a Distance- CIS 187 Implementing IP Switching Cisco CCNP SWITCH Prerequisite: CIS 83 passing the CCNA exam equivalent experience. Teaches implementation, moniting, and maintaining switching in converged enterprise campus netwks. Covers planning, configuring, and verifying the implementation of complex enterprise switching solutions. Also covers the secure integration of VLANs, WLANs, voice, and video into campus netwks. May be offered in a Distance- CIS 188 Maintaining and Troubleshooting IP Netwks CCNP TSHOOT Prerequisite: CIS 185 and CIS 187. Teaches moniting and maintaining complex, enterprise routed and switched IP netwks. Covers planning and execution of regular netwk maintenance, as well as suppt and troubleshooting using technology-based processes and best practices, based on systematic and industry recognized approaches. 8 CIS 191AB UNIX/Linux Installation, Configuration and Prerequisite: CIS 90 equivalent skills. Introduces skills required to administer UNIX/Linux systems. Skills include installing and configuring a popular distribution, such as RedHat Linux, maintaining file and file system structures, distributing and moniting processes, starting and stopping the system f routine maintenance and troubleshooting, rebuilding and upgrading the kernel, configuring peripheral devices such as printers and modems, backing up and resting files, and disaster recovery.
