2 APPLICATION FOR BOARD APPROVAL Of the Locally Developed MCP CERTIFICATION 11/12a/12b/12c PREAMBLE: The Computer Science Department at Sardis Secondary, with consultation from the School s administration, technology department, and Microsoft have developed a MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional) program. The program consists of four different MCP courses, each focusing on different but successive objectives that ultimately prepare the student for either their MCSE or MCSA Certification. Qualifying for MCP Certification involves successful completion of several courses: Information Technology 11 or Cisco Certification 11, A+ Certification 11, Server + Certification 12 and successful completion of MCP Certification Exams offered by Microsoft. MCP Certification is a hands-on intermediate to advanced course in computer operating system technology. The program is designed to teach students the skills needed to install, configure, troubleshoot and manage a Windows 2000/XP/.net based network environment. There will be an emphasis on the MCP Certification Exam specification.

3 POSSIBLE QUESTIONS: Is there need or demand for an MCP Certification course? Computers are a vital part of society, and understanding them requires knowledge and training in the fundamentals of Computer Hardware/Software Technology. We have all heard about the ever increasing shortage of highly trained individuals for all aspects of the computer industry. MCP Certification will provide students with a hands-on head start towards the specialized training required in today s computer industry. Many students and employers have stated an interest in these course. With new opportunities being opened up through distant education, a greater number of students will have access to School District #33 technology courses. MCP Certification is an industry-wide credential. Is this course an appropriate course in the public school situation at the level indicated? MCP Certification will be an excellent intermediate to advanced course for those students who wish to pursue a career in computer system management. In fact, MCP Certification is offered in several high schools throughout the USA. These courses will also provide students with University/College transfer credits. Is the proposed course significantly different from existing courses? Yes it is. The material covered within MCP Certification is not being covered in existing courses. In fact, this course is an excellent adjunct to IT 11/12, Cisco 11/12, A+ 11 and Server + 12 already being taught at Sardis Secondary. Has a sound educational rational been developed and written for this course? Yes there has. Please refer to the attached course outline and objectives.

14 MCP Certification 11/12a/12b/12c Course Outline Computers are a vital part of society, and understanding them requires an understanding of the fundamentals of Computer Technology. These courses are a hands-on introduction to the world of Computer Technology, where microcomputer modules and peripherals, and operating systems dominate. Students will learn both the capabilities and limitations of computers operating system through installing, configuring and collaborative team based troubleshooting of microcomputer system problems. I have chosen MCP Certification as an advanced program into computer operating systems for this course for various reasons. Some obvious advantages are: It is an industry-level and worldwide identified and accepted baseline or foundation for an entry-level computer information system management position. Students find it enjoyable and fun, which motivates and encourages. Learning it is a valuable real-world skill in itself. The combination of the following certifications: Cisco, A+, Server+, Unix/Linux and MCP will develop highly marketable students for the computer industry. Many computer related employers are requiring MCP certification as part of an employees resume. MCP certification will enhance your success at entrance to a technology degree and completion of that degree. This course is centered around reading and lab assignments, and students will spend much of their time installing, configuring, and troubleshooting microcomputer systems. Assignments will be of varying levels of difficulty but will become more difficult as the year progresses. MCP Certification is a very hands-on activity. Read over your labs early. A clear understanding of what is expected from the lab will increase your success at mastering the expected outcomes. Students are encouraged to get to know each other and discuss labs and assignments with fellow students. However, the actual design and implementation of your labs and assignments must be an individual activity unless otherwise specified. Evaluation and Expectations: 1. Quizzes, chapter and term tests 2. Written assignments and team based projects/presentation 3. Skill based hands-on labs 4. Class Participation
