Team Brief: February 2012 Subject Content Action Feedback uk Quality News Safety Thermometer for Harm Free Care Project The Safety Thermometer is the measurement tool which has been developed for the Harm Free Care Project The project aims to reduce the number of harms caused to local patients from Pressure Ulcers, Falls, VTE and Catheter Acquired UTI by the end of this year Many clinical teams have taken part in the pilot for the Safety Thermometer since January. Thank you to you all. The Trust is aware that there have been IT issues with the tool and is working to address this before the next data entry, which is due in the middle of March. For more information about the Safety Thermometer or the Harm Free Care project, then please contact Dee Radford, Quality and Safety Facilitator on or shropcom.nhs. uk Chief Executive Roadshows All Staff Invited to come along to the Trust Chief Executive Roadshows drop in and hear about future plans Jo Chambers, Community Trust Chief Executive, is visiting Trust sites for a series of Chief Executive Roadshows. All staff are warmly invited to come along and find out about the Trust Strategy and future direction, including some of our main priority areas for the next few years, and our plans to become a Foundation Trust. Please see February s edition of Inform for the full list of Roadshows or check out the Staff Zone of the website.

Full details of the dates and venues of the Roadshows are advertised in Inform with the next few highlighted below. Your views and ideas are important to the Trust in shaping and developing plans so please do come along to one or more of the sessions. The sessions are open to all staff members and you do not need to book to attend. 1 st March nd March th March 2012 Oswestry Oswestry Health Centre Whitchurch Training Room Beech Ward Bridgnorth League of Friends Coffee Lounge Telford Stirchley Medical Practice Cambrian Surgery, Thomas Savin Road, Oswestry SY11 1GA Whitchurch Community Hospital, Claypit Street, Deermoss, Whitchurch SY13 1NT Northgate, Bridgnorth Shropshire, WV16 4EU Sandino Road Stirchley, Telford, TF3 1FB Telford The Glebe Glebe Centre, Wellington am pm pm am pm FOR MORE DATES AND VENUES SEE INFORM STAFF NEWSLETTER How s the Trust doing? Each month the Trust produces a report on how well it is meeting expected targets below is a quick summary of how we are doing. There are four areas for targets: o High Impact Actions & Clinical Safety Indicators o Waiting times o Data Quality

o Finance Currently Waiting Times and Finance are performing well, with the majority of targets rated as green or amber The Trust is on-track to produce a surplus of 1,459,000 at the end of the current financial year Data Quality and High Impact Actions & Clinical Safety Indicators are not performing as well with many targets reported as red, and a few reporting as green.targets we are not doing as well as hoped on include pressure sores developed in service and Lorenzo data entry within 21 days Chief Pharmacist Joins the Trust Rita O Brien Joins the Trust as Chief Pharmacist Rita joins the Trust following her most recent role in Community Health Services in Medway working as a Community Health Services Pharmacist. This followed the re-organisation of PCT boundaries A graduate from Aston University, Rita worked in the Birmingham area for 18 years, before relocating to Kent. During her time there, Rita worked in a private hospital and after a few years moved to become a prescribing advisor in the local PCT Rita highlights The medicines management remit is large and very varied as medicines are part of most patient pathways. The main objectives are to keep patients safe with respect to their medicines by ensuring that safe systems and processes are in place and promoting evidence based prescribing decisions and using medicines wisely Anyone who needs to contact Rita can do so by Rita.OBrien@ shropcom.nhs. uk or by calling Pending NHS Litigation Authority Assessment Staff encouraged to Review Risk Management and Policy Areas Like all NHS Trusts, we need to have our clinical policies and our risk management systems formally assessed regularly by the NHS Litigation Authority (the NHSLA) Any staff that have any questions about the NHSLA or any of the areas

The NHSLA is the NHS organisation that handles and funds negligence claims against NHS trusts, so they want to know we are keeping the risk of negligence claims low, through having sound policies and systems The NHSLA will be assessing the Trust in July 2012, and preparation is already taking place in relation to the assessment All staff should take this opportunity to strengthen their knowledge of risk management procedures and key clinical policies. Specifically: o The Deteriorating Patient o Clinical Handover of Care o Discharge Arrangements o Consent o Diagnostics and Screening o VTE highlighted, can contact Peter Foord, Risk Manager on or peter.foord@s hropcom.nhs.u k Telehealth Technology and Care Telehealth Telehealth is an innovative way of providing technology to support community health care, making use of mobile phones and their cameras, for example, or ways of monitoring indicators of peoples health at home Commissioners have indicated that they are keen in the implementation of new, innovative technology such as Telehealth The Trust has identified a sum of money for investment in innovative use of technology such as Telehealth, and is developing plans to support specialist clinical services and integrated community services through their roll-out across the Trust This approach also helps the Trust to target care on three very specific areas identified by the Trust as priority areas, which are identified by Jo Chambers as part of her roadshows currently taking place: o Care of frail and elderly people o Management of long term conditions o Specialist and preventative services As the plans develop, more information about the use of Telehealth will be shared with staff through Inform. Staff should check Inform for more details about Telehealth plans in the coming months

Commissioners Decide on Three Services for 2012/13 Any Qualified Provider Update Any Qualified Provider is national policy that aims to increase patient choice of healthcare provider Under this policy, selected health care services can be delivered by any provider (NHS, independent or third sector) that qualifies against predetermined qualification criteria Commissioners in Shropshire County and Telford and Wrekin have agreed on three services that will be opened up to Any Qualified Provider during 2012/ These are: o Audiology (over 55 s non complex); o Core Podiatry for Adults; and o Wheelchair Services for Children We understand these are the only services opening up to AQP during 2012/13 though more services may be opened up in future years It s important to point out that provided we meet the criteria for qualifying to provide these services, we will be able to carry on providing them from September 2012 but that other providers may also be commissioned to provide that service too, so patients can choose The priority for the three identified services is to make sure that they continue to qualify to provide the service to local people meeting qualification criteria, and the services are working on the preparation for that now Staff should check Inform for more details about Telehealth plans in the coming months New Trust Website A New Trust Website is Coming The Trust s Website Team is working to develop a new Trust website The site is being developed with input from a range of Trust staff (clinical, administrative and managerial) and also with input from public, patients and GPs/ commissioners It is hoped that the new site will be ready in early summer 2012 Staff should check Inform for more details about the

Managers are being contacted to provide details of who will be responsible for signing off service-specific content as well as who in their teams will be responsible for adding it to the site and making sure it is up-to-date A training schedule will also be developed allowing relevant people to be trained in content editing, prior to the website s launch REMINDER: Find Out about Your Mandatory Training Requirements Reminder: Mandatory Training The new mandatory training matrix is now available on the learning activities page of the Trust website. The required frequency has also changed for some subjects, such as Equality and Diversity (incorporating Bullying and Harassment) training which is now mandatory every three years for all staff. Please ensure that if you or members of staff within your teams are due an update, that you book to attend one of the advertised sessions for this and other subjects, on the training and development website. Additional training dates are being added to the website daily for all subject areas and further information will be issued through Inform and Team Brief in the next couple of weeks. This will include information on progress towards attendance targets for all subjects, which must be achieved by the end of March 2012 to ensure that the Organisation meets CQC and NHSLA compliance and to keep our staff and patients safe. All staff should check out the Mandatory Training requirements on the Learning Activities page of the Trust s Staff Zone. New or Updated Trust policies.
