7 2. enrol and register What is the difference between enrolment and registration? To enrol, you add yourself to courses. To register, you pay your tuition and incidental fees, or register without payment (defer fees). enrolment Enrolment occurs when you add yourself to courses. Most graduate units allow students to enrol in courses through the Student Web Service ( however, some graduate units require students to fill out a form. Consult your home graduate unit for detailed instructions and the SGS Sessional Dates for course enrolment deadlines: uoft.me/courseenrolment registration To register on time, pay your tuition and incidental fees or register without payment (defer your fees) by September 12 (if you are starting in September) or January 9 (if you are starting in January). 9 funding & awards U of T is committed to the financial support of graduate students in doctoral stream programs. Although financial support cannot be guaranteed for all graduate students, we encourage you to inquire about financial assistance at your graduate unit. If you are a research master s or PhD student, the amount of your funding package, the number of years you will receive it, and the composition of the funding will depend on your specific program. Minimum funding packages include academic tuition fees plus a stipend of $15,000. Your funding package may be made up of U of T fellowships, scholarships or awards, and teaching and research assistantships. Each faculty has its own funding arrangements, administered by its graduate units. Most graduate units will send you a detailed breakdown of your funding package at the beginning of each academic year. Check with your graduate unit for full details. Students in professional master s and doctoral programs typically self-fund their educational expenses through a variety of programs including student loans, student line of credit, and employment income. They may also be eligible for a limited number of graduate awards available through their graduate units and various external agencies. the graduate awards office The Graduate Awards Office (GAO) at SGS provides administrative support for a wide range of scholarship and financial aid programs. Whether you are applying for a scholarship or you are seeking financial support to attend a conference, the GAO can provide advice and assistance. I think the key to success in grad school lies in the three P s: Professor, People & Project. You want to work on a project that interests you, under the supervision of a professor you are compatible with, and have the support of people in your lab. Financial counselling is also available through the GAO to assist you with managing educational expenses, budgeting and planning. Our financial counsellor can provide information and direction on various financial aid programs such as student loans, University of Toronto grants, and other opportunities. Counselling may be provided in person, via , or by telephone.
