1 COURSE SYLLABUS EG2031 Power System Analysis - Part hp, TELPM This course deals with advanced methods for analysis of power system dynamic, stability and control. In order to pass the examination (thereby the course), you will need to show that you are able to explain the various power system instabilities and dynamics in power systems, apply and explain different methods for analyzing power system stability, create mathematical models for dynamic and stability analysis of power systems, explain different power system controls, and their impact on the system stability. In order to receive a higher grade (A-D), you will also need to show both orally and in written reports that you are able to demonstrate how the transient stability of a power system can be analyzed by using Equal Area Criterion, analyze electromechanical modes in power systems, design excitation systems to improve transient stability, and power oscillations damping, perform frequency control, reflect on, evaluate, and critically assess others scientific results. During the project work hours, the teaching assistants will be available in H1 to assist the students with the assignments (home exam). Note that teaching assistants will only be available during the project work hours.

3 Course literature The course literature consists of two compendia Stability of Power Systems, An introduction (Blue) Power Systems Analysis Part 2, EG2031, Exercises (Green) Price: 150 SEK. Course Registration To register for the course you need to sign up on the list circulating during the lectures in the first week. Thereafter the list will be available at STEX. B-number A unique identification number, called B-number, will be given to each student. This B- number will be used as identification and in the assignments (home exam), i.e. you must use your B-number in the calculations. The calculations are performed with the all-purpose numerical analysis program MATLAB. You get your individual B-number by filling out the form on the Message Board in Bilda. Examination The examination consists of two parts, namely Part A which is a scheduled written exam and Part B which is a project work (home exam). It is mandatory to sign up for the exam (Part A) at least two weeks in advance. This is done through My Pages at the Student web: To be able to sign up for an exam you need to be registered for the course and also be registered for the current semester. On My Pages you can see the courses you are registered to under Active courses. To be able to use My Pages you need a kth.se-account. Rules regulating written examinations at KTH can be found at If you are unable to register for the exam then contact STEX directly. Part A This scheduled written exam gives maximum 50 points and decides if you pass the course or not. Examination aids Part A: No aids Part B (home exam) Part B consists of three assignments (home exam) which give you the opportunity to improve your grade. Solutions for each assignment (home exam) must be presented in an individual written report and the report should be uploaded in Bilda (bilda.kth.se). The report should be uploaded in the correct folder under Assignments and needs to be a pdf-document. The file name should be set to your B-number. For example, if your B-number is 23 your file should be named 23.pdf. In addition to get any points for the assignments D1 and D3 (home exam) it is needed to orally present and oppose these assignments (home exam). This will be performed in groups of two people and the list of group members will be distributed during the course. Each group

4 will present one assignment and oppose on another group s presentation. The occasions of these presentations can be found in the course schedule. For D2 no oral presentation is needed, however, an individual written opposition is needed which should be uploaded in Bilda. Your final grade in the course is set by Table 2. The course coordinator, who will decide on the format (oral or written) and the date of the

Course evaluation Your feedback is of paramount importance to the continuous improvement of the course. The evaluation form is available in Bilda and is of course completely anonymous. Please take some time to complete the form. To further evaluate and enhance the course we need a few students willing to participate in the Course Evaluation Board. The Board members will meet two times during the course to discuss the course details at a lunch offered by the Division of Electric Power Systems.
