1 2015 WaACRAO CONFERENCE - SESSION INFORMATION Credentials Evaluator Roundtable Rose Spodobalski-Brower, Central Washington University Join in a roundtable discussion on developing policy and transfer equivalencies for military credits with a second roundtable discussion on ideas and feedback on ctclink. Cultivating Relationships with Faculty Scott Dittman, Washington and Lee University and AACRAO Cultivating good relationships with faculty helps to ensure regular consultation and collaboration with the registrar and other office staff and improving service to all campus constituencies. Join the conversation with Scott Dittman, University Registrar & Secretary of the Faculty from Washington and Lee University. The VA Perspective on Transfer and Prior Learning Assessment for Veterans Laura Bach, State Approving Agency, Washington Student Achievement Council Understanding the issues related to the assessment of transfer and prior learning for Veterans. When should evaluations occur?, Can a Veteran Opt Out, What strategies can be employed to become more veteran aware and veteran friendly? How does transfer of credit affect other Veterans Benefits like housing? Residency Justin Kjolseth, Assistant Attorney General of Washington, Education Division Jim West, Washington Student Achievement Council Join in a lively discussion of residency updates and issues. Topics covered include: Implementation of legislation modifying the definition of resident student to comply with the Veterans Choice Act of 2014; Withholding of Removal clarifying memorandum; Updates to the Residency Handbook and WAC; Development of a Q & A document for residency. There will be time for questions and discussion.

Working with Non-Native English Speaking Students Rina Tsujimoto, North Seattle College Have you ever gotten stuck on how to explain things when you are trying to help nonnative English speaking students? Have you felt so unsure whether the students are really getting what you are talking about? If yes, this session is for you! I m going to share some useful tips on working with non-native English speaking students from my professional and personal experience. I work primarily with non-native English speaking students as an academic advisor. In addition, I was an international student myself and am an immigrant. So, be ready to hear my embarrassing stories!

If so, come to this roundtable to share information and learn from each other s best practices (and mistakes!) around topics like: Decision processes (and assessment of those processes), What qualifies as a hardship/medical emergency/extenuating circumstance, Parameters and limits in place (e.g., deadlines to file, total number allowed), Number of requests received (are they increasing?), Can you bring the numbers down, Common conditions cited, Involving other partners on campus in the process and Impacts on retention and progress toward degree. Moving away from Reactive Recruitment Practices to an Annual Communication Plan Colm Joyce, Clark College Does your institution participate in reactive recruiting. Join Colm Joyce from Clark College to find out how Clark moved from just-in-time reactive recruitment to creating an annual communication plan. Lessons Learned: 30+ Years in the Office of the Registrar Virjean Hanson Edwards, University of Washington Over the years Virjean was promoted from office assistant in grade recording to supervisory positions and eventually to University Registrar. As a state employee that journey was not paved in gold, but it was rich in lessons learned, good stories and the satisfaction of working in a field that matters. Implementing changes to Veterans coding, funding and residency and collaborating efforts with Veterans department, Financial Aid department and Enrollment Services department Washington Reverse Articulation Pilot Program: Implications and Challenges from a State Perspective Joyce Hammer, State Board for Community and Technical Colleges Julie Garver, Council of Presidents Washington State University (WSU) and the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) have embarked on a pilot program to allow students who have completed appropriate courses and transferred to WSU to earn an academic associate degree awarded through their previous community or technical college (CTC). This landmark work reflects a national trend to award credit to students "when credit is due": we will discuss the latest developments with the intention of implementation at a statewide level. Management and Supervision Tools for Effective HR Management Becky Rawlings, Whatcom Community College Michael Singletary, Whatcom Community College This presentation focuses on personnel management and how to have difficult conversations with your employees. Participants will learn how to create a quality working environment and how to develop a process that holds employees accountable for their job performance.
