9 Scholarship is the defining characteristic of the Professoriate Scholarship of Discovery is generally what is understood as "research." It is committed to developing new knowledge, and focuses on the question, "What is to be known, what is yet to be found Scholarship of Application focuses on the questions, "How can knowledge be applied to consequential problems? How can it be helpful to individuals as well as institutions? Scholarship of Integration is focused on developing perspectives on knowledge. It is... serious, disciplined work that seeks to interpret, draw together, and bring new insight to bear on original research Scholarship of Instruction Pedagogical procedures must be carefully planned, continuously examined, and relate directly to the subject taught Scholarly Approach: Clear Goals, Adequate Preparation, Appropriate Methods, Significant Results, Effective Presentation, Reflective Critique Boyer, Ernest L Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, 1990

18 Hollowing Out vs. Sustained Growth At one end of the spectrum, local companies, recognizing the importance to their own innovation processes of tapping into the global network of knowledge and ideas, reach progressively farther afield to do so, and eventually relocate these activities and perhaps ultimately all of their operations out of the region altogether. At the other end of the spectrum, local companies seek to boost their innovation performance by strengthening their ties with other local firms and with local public research and educational institutions. In this scenario the local economy emerges as a center of new knowledge creation and application, attracting firms from elsewhere, and stimulating the formation of new local businesses.
