3 WELCOME TO SCUOLA SUPERIORE SANT ANNA History of Scuola Superiore Sant Anna Scuola Superiore Sant Anna, was established in 1967 as the Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento after merging the Scuola per le Scienze Applicate A. Pacinotti (founded in 1951) and the Collegio Medico-Giuridico. The latter was, in turn, the result of a merger between the pre-war Collegio Mussolini per le Scienze Corporative and the Collegio Nazionale Medico. The previously existing institutions were based on the model of (and administered by) the Scuola Normale Superiore. In 1987 the Scuola Superiore Sant Anna acquired complete independence both from the Scuola Normale and the University of Pisa. Sant Anna replaced Antonio Pacinotti as dedication, when the Scuola Superiore Sant Anna gained its current headquarters in Pisa s city center in 1987 and became dedicated to Sant Anna instead of Antonio Pacinotti. Scuola Superiore Sant Anna today Scuola Superiore Sant Anna (hereafter Scuola) holds a unique position within the Italian university system. It is both a university in its own right, offering Masters and PhD courses, while for under graduates it works as the Honors College of the University of Pisa. Potential under graduates undergo a rigorous public examination, and only the very best are creamed off to combine their Pisa University studies with the extra options available at Scuola Superiore Sant Anna, these students are called Honors College Students. Honors College Students live at the Scuola and study totally free of charge but have to get top marks in all their exams and show proficiency in two foreign languages. The Scuola: Aula Magna and after restoration 3
4 Scuola Superiore Sant Anna is also integrated with the Scuola Normale Superiore, another specialized university of excellence offering different courses. Together, Scuola Superiore Sant Anna, the Scuola Normale Superiore, and the University of Pisa make up the Pisa University System. This is a unique education and research model, which attracts students and researchers from all over Italy and from abroad, giving Pisa an internationally important role as a city of study, research and innovation. Scuola Superiore Sant Anna is also a renowned research centre in the fields of Experimental Sciences (Agricultural Sciences, Engineering, Medical Sciences) and Social Sciences (Economics and Management, Law, Political Sciences). Masters and PhD courses are offered, but again only to highly proficient students from all over the world (30% of the PhD students are not Italian). The location Scuola Superiore Sant Anna is located in the heart of Pisa, within a fourteenthcentury Benedictine monastery, which has been entirely restored and converted into a modern campus. Pisa, a former Maritime Republic, is one of the most charming towns in Italy. It is world famous for the Leaning Tower, which stands in the magnificent Piazza dei Miracoli. The river Arno runs through the town, which is only a few kilometres from the sea and yet also close to the hills. Pisa is just one of the main attractions in Tuscany, one of the most beautiful regions in all Italy. Tuscany was the birthplace of the Renaissance and of the Italian language, and boasts an artistic, cultural and landscape heritage, which makes it a must for tourists from all over the world. 36 Confucius Institute The Istituto Confucio di Pisa is the result of a partnership between the Scuola Superiore Sant Anna and Chongqing University signed in December 2004 in Beijing, during the official visit of the then-president of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. The Istituto Confucio di Pisa is located at the Scuola, and is managed in cooperation with Chongqing University, with the support of the China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (Hanban, in Chinese), a department of the Ministry of Education of the People s Republic of China. It is a prominent cultural, economic and training project, acting as a reference point for the economic relationship between Tuscany and China, as well as the cultural recognition of the Chinese community in Tuscany. The main activities of the Istituto Confucio di Pisa include: chinese language courses, specifically tailored to meet the needs of users (schools, university students, institutions, companies). The courses are held by native Chinese teachers selected by Hanban; chinese Proficiency Test (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi - HSK) training courses; scientific activities, such as: research groups; conferences; seminars; professors, teachers, researchers and student exchanges; cultural events, such as concerts, book societies, drama performances, exhibitions, traditional performances, movies and documentaries; publications regarding the Institute s scientific activities. 37 Excellence in Research The university and graduate students become part of a scientific community rich in stimuli, where research supports the various phases of study. This is a unique community where passion for research is fostered and cultivated from every aspect. To achieve excellence in their field of study, students are offered the opportunity to use the laboratories and research centres of the Scuola Superiore Sant Anna, as well as to collaborate with foreign universities. Centre of Excellence for Information, Communication and Perception Engineering (CEIICP) The Centre of Excellence for Information, Communication and Perception Engineering (CEIICP) was established in 2001, as a result of a joint venture in the telecommunications sector between the Sant Anna School and Marconi Communications SpA (now Ericsson). In partnership with CNIT (National Inter- University Consortium for Telecommunications), the two parties signed a tenyear agreement for the creation of a research centre for photonic networks and technologies, thus realizing through CEIIC a unique example of synergy in Italy. The Centre has gained a prominent position in the national and international scenario, thanks to the various agreements with foreign universities, joint laboratories, and European and Extra- European partnerships. The CEIIC InReTe (Telecommunication Network Engineering) laboratory and the CNIT National Photonic Network Laboratory (LNRF) are known together as the IRCPhoNeT Integrated Research Centre on Photonic Networks and Technologies. In January 2007 ReTiS (Real-Time Embedded Systems) Laboratory was merged with CEIIC, thus creating an even more important centre for information and telecommunication engineering. The ReTiS Laboratory works in the field of information engineering, in two main areas: real-time applications, and the modelling, simulation, management and 36
38 CEIICP, the main entrance 37
39 automation of procedures and document flows. In 2009 CEIIC further expanded with the confluence of the PERCRO Laboratory (Perceptual Robotics Laboratory) and they came to include also the subject of Perception Engineering (perceptual robotics). The mission of the PERCRO Laboratory is to study, design and develop concepts and advanced interaction technologies to improve communication between humans and their increasingly responsive environment, especially where virtual environments and telerobotic systems are concerned The CEIICP is located in CNR Area, at 1, Via Moruzzi. To reach CEIICP by bus from the Centre of Pisa, following the map of the public bus service. It was set up to fully enhance the research activities of the Sant Anna School, by housing some of its laboratories. These labs carry out scientific and technological research of excellence in many areas, including biomedicine, microengineering, robotics, mechatronics, virtual reality, information technology, plant biotechnology, and agricultural sciences. The basic aim behind PSV is thus technological transfer. The idea is to create new innovative companies in high technology sectors, using a young, qualified and creative, human workforce trained in its research laboratories. Moreover, PSV works in collaboration with Pont- Tech, a company dealing with technological transfer. Pont-Tech manages an incubator of newly established companies in Pontedera, whereas PSV provides technological advice and start-up support services, as well as helping these companies to establish new partnerships. Located in Viale R. Piaggio, 34 in Pontedera (PI), PSV opening hours from Monday to Saturday, 8.00 a.m p.m., Sundays: closed. Executive Secretariat: Federica RADICI Tel /003 [email protected].
