5 INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND TECHNOLOGY LAW When it comes to top environments in which to explore intellectual property law, few compare to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, an epicenter of innovation and discovery often referred to as Silicon Prairie. In this fertile environment, the curriculum and faculty at the College of Law cover a deep and broad spectrum of intellectual property and technology law, including in the areas of trademark, internet, patent, copyright, supercomputing, biotechnology, information science, and engineering. Campus, state, and national leaders solicit the faculty s legal expertise on IP issues arising from a host of new technologies, and organizations such as Google, Microsoft, and Department of Homeland Security currently fund research at Illinois Law. Through ICSSP, Illinois engineering and law students receive hands-on training from the nation s top legal and computer science experts and join an emerging field in which there is a significant shortage of knowledgeable workers with multidisciplinary backgrounds. It s a demand that is guaranteed to grow as the U.S. increasingly relies on cyber infrastructure, which provides the backbone for our defense, energy, financial, and telecommunication systems, among others. First-year law students are invited to apply for ICSSP; a background in computer science or engineering is preferred. The program runs through the second and third years of law school concurrent with regular law studies, and students are given full reimbursement for tuition and fees along with a living stipend. Upon completion of the program, they receive a certificate in cyber security and undertake a two-year term of employment with the federal government after graduation. One of Illinois first cyber security scholars, Whitney Merrill ( 14) is currently pursuing a master s degree in computer science at the University of Illinois. Through ICSSP, Merrill learned how to use various tools to find security vulnerabilities. She recently gave two talks on encryption and the law and on the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act at two major information security conferences. She also spoke at the TriBeCa Film Festival on the portrayal of hackers in film. Following the completion of her master s degree, she hopes to practice information security and privacy law: I want to work for a government agency in a role that focuses on information security, privacy, and technology.

6 BUSINESS AND LAW For an economy to work well, people have to trust that deals will be enforced. Facilitating economic exchange is a lot of what lawyers do. With over 75 business-related course offerings, the expertise of our faculty in bankruptcy, commercial law, corporate law, labor law, and tax law, and nationally recognized departments of finance and accounting, Illinois offers a first-rate program that provides a solid foundation for students interested in pursuing careers in business-related fields. That means engagement with the practicing bar, whether it is filing an amicus brief at the Supreme Court, speaking at continuing education seminars for lawyers and judges, or having a research agenda that collects data about what is happening in the bankruptcy courts. The contacts one develops as a faculty member doing these things not only enrich the classroom but also can help students transition into the world of business law. Robert M. Lawless Associate Dean for Research Max L. Rowe Professor of Law

15 Colin Willmott, 14 Associate Goldberg Segalla Jonathan Schwartz, 05 Partner Goldberg Segalla It was through the Chicago Program that Colin Willmott ( 14) first had the opportunity to join Goldberg Segalla, a mid-sized firm with a diverse range of practice areas. Jonathan Schwartz ( 05) served as the firm s liaison for the law clerk position and worked with Greg Miarecki, Executive Assistant Dean for Career Planning and Professional Development, on finding the right Chicagobased candidate. Willmott stood out, given his law review, moot court, and extern experience. Willmott s time as a law clerk served as an extended interview period, affording the firm the opportunity to really get to know his personality and work product. Following his clerkship, Willmott received an offer to join Goldberg Segalla as an associate. Schwartz said, We are very proud and protective of our firm s culture. We need to ensure that the candidate would be a good fit. Our firm does not have much of a history of hiring new graduates, so for us to do so, the candidate has to be exceptional. We can say with confidence that Colin is exactly that. Willmott s experience is an excellent example of what the Chicago Program is intended to do facilitate connections between alumni and students. Schwartz could not agree more, and emphasizes the importance of networking to Chicago Program students. You re in Chicago, so be sure to take advantage of everything the city has to offer law students. Join organizations, attend receptions hosted by those organizations, meet your future colleagues and clients, and begin making connections with your future employers. BENEFITS Professors are College of Law faculty and leading practitioners predominately from Chicago-area law firms, corporations, government agencies, and public interest organizations. They offer real-world experience and advice to students, helping the transition from law student to lawyer. The innovative curriculum engages students with insight into timely and relevant areas of legal practice as well as practical skills training essential to new practicing lawyers. Students network with professors, panelists, legal professionals, and the College s Chicago-based alumni at program events and lectures. The flexible schedule allows students to work part-time during the week, providing the opportunity for students to start post-graduation jobs early; intern with firms, government agencies, and judges to gain valuable experience; and interview with prospective employers.
