Introduction My name is Tommy Ekdahl and I have been doing genealogical research for The Bondesson and The Ekdahl families. These two families represent my fathers parents The Ekdahls (his father) and The Bondesson (his mother). The two families have their roots in Skåne which is in the Southern part of Sweden. It is the agricultural centre of Sweden. Both families are concentrated to Kristianstads Län and particular to the parish of Nosaby and suroundings. The Ekdahl family has the mixture of farmers and military people while The Bondesson is more pure farmers. The name Bondesson means the farmers son. All the son-names are constructed from their fathers first name and than added the son. Bondesson is the son of Bonde. Similar the name Bondesdotter is constructed from their fathers first name and than added daughter. Sometimes the name was not changed and than they kept their familyname instead. In the end of 1800 the sons and daughters kept their original familynames and did not change it any more. The Bondesson family is part of the big family Bjärasläkten which is traced back to 1509 and the first known ancestors name is Troells from Bjära (b d.1557). As a comperison I would like to mention that Columbus discovered America at the same time as he was born. The village of Bjära is very close to Nosaby. This familytree gives a picture of our ancestors mostly farmers for almost 500 years. The farmers usually stayed at their farm and the farm was passed from father to son in many generations. The farmers in Skåne was very well known for beeing stubbon and had very much selfconfidence. They were very selldom knocked down by difficulties. Freedom was a golden word. The growing soil were very important and it was there they had their heart. Bjärasläkten has of course a lot of professions represented but the ''entreprenur'' kind of people are in the majority. I now would like to share this Family Book with my relatives around the world. For these families as well as many other Swedish families the Emigration wave to USA was a very important milestone where many families where splited up on each side of the Atlantic. To get a complete familytree I have therefore tried to trace all the families on both side of the Atlantic. In the section ''Hourglass Tree of Tommy Karl Ekdahl'' you can see my relations to The Bondesson and The Ekdahl family. You can also see the first five generations from Troell in ''Descendent Tree of Troells''. The Bondesson family belongs to the line of Johanna Mogensdotter och Klemmed Månsdotter. Today there are 17 generations from our first known ancestor Troell. Details you can get from section ''Outline Descendant Tree of Troells''. I will try to answer the following questions: General background why our relatives left Sweden 2

Which part of Sweden were they coming from and how was the landscape? Who left and when did they leave? Which way did they go? Where did they go in USA? 3

GENERAL BACKGROUND WHY OUR ANCESTORS LEFT SWEDEN The tidal wave of Swedish emigration began in the mid 1840s, when the first organized emigrant groups started to arrive in New York. These emigrants were followed during the period up to 1930 by almost 1.3 million countrymen. The Swedes are still in rank number seven among the European immigrant groups. In proportion to the population of their home countries, only the British Isles and Norway surpassed Sweden in the number of immigrants. The effect of this exodus from Sweden reached its climax around 1910, when 1.4 million Swedish first and second generation immigrants were listed as living in the U.S. Compare this to Sweden's population at the time: 5.5 million. Roughly one fifth of all Swedes had their homes in America right before World War I! Agricultural crisis Large families and generations of divided inheritances led to the fragmenting of farms into tiny land holdings. Poor soil was laid under the plow, and the cottages of tenant farmers and landless laborers multiplied. The population of some parishes doubled three times over. Some advanced landholders tried to reorganize agriculture through the state-supported enclosure movement, farm schools and refined methods of farming, but it was difficult to reform the thousand-year-old "Mother economy" on a wider scale. In the middle of the nineteenth century, Sweden was a land of poverty, want and social frustration. A new era was dawning Industry and communications were less developed in Sweden than in most other West European countries. The government was still mainly unaware of the dormant riches of the country's forests, mountains and rivers. But the industrial epoch was dawning and the migrations within Sweden from farm to town were symptoms of a new era. The second half of the nineteenth century experienced an increasing series of technical inventions and improvements, which quickly transformed small scale workshops into modern industries, or covered the country with a network of railroads. New industrial centres were created around the railroads and the mouths of the rivers, and the old cities developed faster than ever before. Compulsory elementary school, a modern welfare program and liberal economic reforms pointed toward a way out of poverty and distress. Day was breaking, although it was not yet felt by the people on the overcrowded farms, the crafters or the enormous agricultural proletariat. It is true that the industrial era seemed to promise a new future for most of them, but the frames around the splendid expectations proved to be cut too short. For instance, it was easy to buy a ticket to Stockholm, but where does one find housing and a job in a city suddenly over-crowded with job-hungry unskilled labours? The labour market of the small, backward country was too limited. Many young people were therefore drawn down into the social swamp of Stockholm, ending up as beggars or prostitutes. Others read the advertisements about America. Beyond the Ocean a new chance awaited those who could save up or borrow some money, or get a prepaid ticket from a relative who was already lucky enough to live in "the Promised Land." Therefore, the urbanization process only temporarily slowed down the emigration. Approximately one fourth of the Swedish emigrants in came from cities. Mass emigration At the end of the 1860s, Sweden was struck by the last of a series of severe hunger 10

catastrophes. The agriculture which was still only partially modernized had been struggling with difficult times. Now came a series of crop failures thus became "the wet year" of rotting grain, 1868 became the "dry year" of burned fields, and 1869 became "the severe year" of epidemics and begging children. Sixty thousand people left Sweden during these three "starvation years". It was the beginning of the mass emigration which, with short intervals, was to continue up to World War I. During the era of mass emigration more than a million Swedes emigrated, mostly to the U.S. The emigration resumed after the war, but on a more modest scale. It ceased completely during the depression at the end of the 1920s. The emigration machinery Thingvalla The Swedish mass emigration would not have been possible without the Swedish railroads and the organized passenger traffic over the Atlantic. At this time no Swedish line carried passengers directly from Gothenburg to New York. The Swedes therefore had to use British or German ships. The emigrant route started with the train ride to the big port of Gothenburg, where the complete passage, such as Gothenburg-Chicago, of the British Wilson Line, which brought the emigrants to Hull in England. A train took them across the country to Liverpool or Glasgow; from there the Inman Line or some other company's ships sailed them to New York. The whole voyage Gothenburg-New York need not take more than three weeks in Ola Bondesson went with the ship Thingvalla to New York. New York, the gateway to America New York met the newcomers with a forest of masts. The impression created by the big city must have been overwhelming for the children of the soil. Strange tongues and the busy activities of the "runners" were nerve-racking and bewildering. Many of the young girls had now reached their goal - work in an American household - but for most the seaport was only one step along the way, a place to change means of transportation for the journey inland. 11

How was it to arrive at Castle Garden New York? Castle Garden The following procedure was valid for the early emigrants as Ola, Bonde and Per Bondesson. Castle Garden was clost 1892 and Ellis Island was opened at the same time. The operating procedures were organised into the following departments. 1. Boarding As the immigrants clustered on the deck of the ship at quarantine, an official health inspector scanned them quickly for signs of contagious illnesses and examined the ship's records for details of deaths at sea. The ship was then allowed to proceed up the bay and anchor near Castle Garden. 2. Landing After a customs inspector checked their luggage, the immigrants, accompanied by a landing agent, were taken from the vessel in barges and tugs to the Castle Garden pier. On landing, the immigrants were examined by a medical officer to determine if the health inspector might have missed any sick at quarantine. Steamer transferred sick immigrants to the hospital. Following this examination the immigrants were taken into the rotunda, a large circular space situated in the centre of the depot, which had separate compartments depending on whether the immigrant did or did not speak English for registration. 3. Registration The name, nationality, former residence and intended destination were recorded for each immigrant. 4. Agents of the Railroad Companies After registration, immigrants were directed to this agency where they could purchase tickets to their destinations without danger of being defrauded or subjected to extortion, which frequently happened outside Castle Garden. 12

5. City Baggage Delivery Those immigrants who chose to stay in New York City or the vicinity arranged for delivery of their baggage in this department. 6. Exchange Brokers Immigrants possessing gold or silver could have it exchanged here for U.S. currency by three exchange brokers who were closely supervised by the Commissioners of Emigration. 7. Information At this point in the process, the immigrants were assembled in the rotunda and those who had friends waiting for them at the entrance to Castle Garden were notified and directed to them. Those who had letters of funds waiting was notified. 8. Letter Writing This department included clerks versed in foreign languages who assisted immigrants wishing to communicate with someone at a distance. While waiting for a reply, and if destitute, such immigrants could find a temporary home in the institutions at Ward's Island. 9. Boardinghouse Keepers Boarding house keepers who were properly licensed by the city and certified to be responsible people were allowed in the rotunda to solicit immigrants who planned to stay in New York City for some time. To protect immigrants from the earlier abuses, the boardinghouses were regulated and closely supervised. 10. Forwarding This department handled letters and funds sent to immigrants prior to arrival. 11. Wards Island Applications for admission to the institutions on Ward's Island, determining applicant eligibility for admission, and maintaining records of admission and discharge were handled here. Two physicians here examined sick and destitute immigrants applying for relief. Although the changes significantly improved the lot of the new immigrant, arriving in New York was still a frightening and dangerous experience. While the commissioners banned the thieves and undesirables from Castle Garden, they were still outside the gates ready to take advantage of the unwary. 13

Arriving to New York after 1892 at Ellis Island 14

This was the procedure for many years for our ancestors arriving to New York. To the immigrant Ellis Island is an ordeal. The "man at the gate " is a big giant who can speed them through or crush their lives out of their hopes in an instant. A thousand, some useful, some useless, and some unnecessary, are prepared in the hope that they will help in the navigation of the tortuous channel of admission to America. Passing quarantine and the customs officials as the ship comes up the bay, it is warped into its dock, and when the last cabin passenger has gone ashore the steerage people are put into barges and towed away to Ellis Island, where final judgement awaits them. Their tickets are fastened in their caps or pinned to their clothes, and their bills of lading are in their hands. When they enter they are lined up in long rows, with two doctors for each row. They must walk down a narrow lane made by rows of piping, with an interval of twenty feet between them. As they approach, the doctors begin to size up each immigrant. First they survey him as a whole. If the general impression is favourable they cast their eyes at his feet, to see if they are all right. Then come his legs, his body, his hands, his arms, his face, his eyes, his head. While the immigrant has been walking the twenty feet the doctors have asked and answered in their own minds several hundred questions. If the immigrant reveals any intimation of any disease, if he has any deformity, even down to a crooked finger, the fact is noticed. If he is so evidently a healthy person that the examination reveals no reason why he should be held, he is passed on. But if there is the least suspicion in the minds of the doctors that there is anything at all wrong with him, a chalk mark is placed upon the lapel of his coat. After passing the surgeons who examine their health tickets and their bodies, the immigrants next encounter the one who examines their eyes. He is looking for trachoma. Those discovered to have it are sent away for deportation. The line moves on past the female inspector looking for prostitutes, and then past the inspectors who ask the twenty-two questions required by law. Here is where the lies are told. Most of the immigrants have been coached as to what answers to give. The surgeons mark about half of the immigrants with chalk marks as they file by, and those so marked go to another pen for further examination. After the immigrants have passed the inspectors comes the real parting of the ways -- the "stairway of separation." Here are three stairways, one leading to the railroad room, another to the New York room, and another to the ferry. To those who have passed muster in this ordeal the way is now open. They are inside the gate and their troubles are over. No doubt it was a very tough procedure for our ancestors to arrive at Castle Garden or Ellis Island. The homesteaders President Lincoln's Homestead Act of 1862, the political stabilization after 1865, and the enormously expanding industries of the North represented three important drawing factors on Swedish emigration to the U.S. The result of the Swedish land-hunger was that the area of Swedish-owned farmland in America of 1920 corresponded to 2/3 of all arable land in Sweden. In some counties, such as Chicago, Isanti and Kanabec in Minnesota, the land 15

became almost totally owned by Swedes. A string of Swedish settlements also grew up around the new railroads. The possibility of combining farmwork with jobs for the railroad or a lumber company was important for the penniless Swedes. Most of the unmarried men worked as lumberjacks or on the railroads. The railroad king James Hill is quoted: "Give me snuff, whiskey and Swedes, and I will build a railroad to hell.". Swedes in the cities The popular picture of the Swedish immigrant is the hardworking farmer. But reality looked otherwise. In 1910 no less than 61% of 665,000 Swedish-born Americans lived in cities. This was a much higher level of urbanization than in Sweden. It looks as if the Swedes combined the move to another country with the step from farm to town. The wave of emigration passed through expanding cities like Chicago and Minneapolis. The labour market of the big city had more and better offers to cash-less immigrants than the farm regions. This was especially true for the unmarried women who had enough of their old lives as milkmaids. Therefore the industries of the cities absorbed more and more Swedish immigrants. Chicago became the center of the urbanization process. The population figures for Gothenburg, Sweden's second largest city, were at the turn of the century surpassed by Chicago's Swedish population, which was then close to 150,000 of first and second generation. Sine 1870 Chicago had its own Swede Town with a "Swedish Snuff Street" as its main vein. The Swedish Chicagoans became prominent within all walks of life. They were especially important within the building industry, a fact which is reflected in the saying that "the Swedes built Chicago." The emigrants from Sweden spoke their own language and were influenced by traditions quite different from the ones prevailing in the "adopted land." From the 1870s many were living in densely populated settlements which Chicago and Minnesota had melted together into vast Swedish-dominated areas. They became the cradles of Swedish-American culture with characteristics different from both America and Sweden. In the midst of such an enclave it was easy to believe that Swedish language and traditions would remain in the U.S.A. At that time the Swedes had long had their own churches, clubs, schools and newspapers. It was possible to live and die in Chicago or Minnesota without speaking anything but Swedish. The overwhelming majority of Swedish immigrants had to start from the bottom level of society. Even skilled artisans met with severe problems when they did not speak the language. But the bulk of immigrants had very little professional experience. They had been expulsed from the rural society in Sweden. The men got jobs as underpaid labourers, and the girls became maids in "American families" if they were not hired as seamstresses in the "sweat shops". Some of them could not stand the hardships. They returned to Sweden, or sank down in the big city's underworld. 16

WHICH PART OF SWEDEN WERE THEY COMING FROM AND HOW WAS THE LANDSCAPE? The Bondesson and The Ekdahls were coming from the Southern part of Sweden. They came mainly from the parish of Nosaby which is situated east of Kristianstad in Kristianstad Län. Nosaby was part of Villands härad. The name of Nosaby is from the Middle Eve. The area had a rich well cultivated soil in an open landscape. Three important railroads were crossing Kristianstad Älmhult, Kristianstad Sölvesborg and the Åhuslinjen. Nosaby was close to the city of Kristianstad and had good communications which made many establishments for market gardening (garden centers). Within the parish of Nosaby there were concentrated villages as Balsby, Nosaby, Åraslöv and Hammar. Hammar had a big manor-house from the 14th century. 19

WHO LEFT AND WHEN DID THEY LEAVE? The Bondesson brothers Ola, Bonde and Per left first. Than five children of their brother Karl left Sweden.. His children was Bertha, Frida, Ellen, Agda and Karl. Karl Bondesson and his child Martha were the only ones left in Sweden The three brothers who left Sweden with the last name Bondesson did not keep the name they changed it to the old family-name Nilsson. Ola Bondesson (b.1864 ) left 1882 for New York and onwards to Washington. Bonde Bondesson (b.1868) left 1885 for New York and onwards to Washington. Per Bondesson (b.1866) left 1889 for New York and onwards to Minnesota. Bonde standing, ola sitting The four sisters left Sweden as Bondesson but some of them changed to Karlsson. Bertha Bondesson (b.1887) left 1905 for Boston. Frida Bondesson (b.1892) left 1907 for Boston. Ellen Bondesson (b.1894) left 1912 for Boston. Agda Bondesson (b.1889) left 1916 for Boston. Karl Bondesson (b.1900) left 1922 for Boston and came back

Bondeson family After they had left the only child left was my grandmother Martha Bondesson (Karlsson) (b.1896). Some of her sisters visited Sweden except Frida. My grandmother and I visited Fridas family They had not seen each other for 65 years. It was a meeting full of love. The reason for not keeping in touch in a better way was religious reasons. Frida had married a catholic man and at that time it was almost forbidden according to the ideas in Sweden. It is very difficult for us to understand but at that time it was important. I will always remember my grandmothers comments when she was together with Frida visiting a catholic mess. I had to really persuade my grandmother to visit a catholic church. Her comments: ''The catholic people are just the same as we are, I can't see that there is any difference''. She also got a warm hug from the Catholic Priest. Why this distance for so many years because some religious ideas?. 24

WHICH WAY DID THEY GO? The Bondesson from Nosaby Skåne Sweden The three brothers of Bondesson started with the ship from Malmö to Copenhagen where they got a ship to Hull in England. From Hull they went by ship to New York. In these early days they entered USA through Immigration in Castle Garden New York. This Immigration office closed Thingvalla The four sisters from Gothenburg of Bondessons went direct to Boston. 26

WHERE DID THEY GO IN USA? The Bondesson from Nosaby Skåne Sweden Ola Bondesson (Nilsson) went to the East Coast of USA. He settled down in Spokane Washington. Bonde Bondesson went to California and settled down in San Fransisco. Per Bondesson went to the ''Swedish'' farmingdistrict of Minessota. The four sisters Bondesson settled down in Boston Massachusets. They started to work as housekeepers in rich families. The brother Karl Bondesson also went to Boston Massachusets and worked in a pianofactory. 28

The Family History of Ola Bonde Nilsson told by Thelma Gibson: Ole and Beulah lived in Mace, Idaho when first married and Ole ran a saloon and had miners cabins for rent with running water. The first in any of the homes. Kenneth and Vera were born there. Mace Idaho After a few years at Valleyford WA where Ole tried to be a farmer they moved to Greenacres Approx Ole bought the domestic water company. Thelma was born there in They lived in a small house that is still on the lot. In 1925 Ole borrowed money from an old skinflint named willie Schrap and built the Greenacres house. 29

House in Spokane Thelma remembers the family sleeping in a wood and Canvastype building that summer and they moved into the new house in the fall. According to Vera s 2 year diary that was found in the attic area by the Battermans and given to Thelma and Zona in The first dinner in the new house was on Oct According to her ''It was grand but daddy seemed worried''. During the depression Beulah took in teachers for room and board. People could not afford to pay the USD 1,75 monthly water bill. So we were furnished with all sorts of food - eggs, milk, butter, chickens, rabbits, vegetables and fruits that Beulah would can and preserve. The good old barter system!. For a few years Ole could only pay the interest on the loan but before too long the mortgage was paid! He worked many odds jobs for others to accomplish this. Beulah was a great gardener and her yard was voted first place 2 years in the valley garden contest. There was also a flourishing vegetable garden on the back of the lot and Ole had some prize concord grapes that he turned into a beautiful wine every year. Even during the war years when sugar was rationed, he managed to scrape up enough stamps for the purchasing of sugar. The wine aged in the fruit cellar under the living room near the fireplace. Sometimes the corks would pop out of the barrels and hit underneath the livingroom floor. There was an asparagas patch in the garden and we had pheasant a few times out of season - thanks to Kenneth's good aim. 30

I was a buttler at the house of Barbara Hutton A luxury life without limitations. Per Bonde Rumhult has really seen the sweet life from inside during the glamorous years around 1920 in New York. He was the servant in charge at the multimillionar house of Barbara Huttons home of childhood. The champagne was flooding and they had dinners on golden plates. Per was sixteen years old when he left Skåne. Miserably poor. He came back to Malmö twelve years later as a half multimillionar. The years in USA were very hard. Per remember: It was a fun time but hard. I travelled over there just to earn money so I could come back to Skåne again. It started very bad for me. I worked very hard but I did not earn any money. My sister who was living in Boston could not help me so I went away as a sailor. It was an adventures time. I remember from one of the ships. We were in the harbour of Vera Cruz, a very hot day in July. I wanted to take a swim. The other boys were cheating me, they told me to just jump from the ladder. After a few minutes the first mate came running and shouting loudly: Get up, get up for heavens sake the sharks are coming. The boys had cheating me to jump into an area full of sharks. I was feeling very bad afterwards when I saw the sharp fins of the sharks coming close to the ship. Another time the ship left without me. It was in South Carolina. I had a few hours off and when I came back to the harbour the ship was gone. All my equipments were on board the ship. In a pair of very dirty shorts and without shoes I had to walk to my sister in Boston. 46

47

I wanted to save my shoes and only use them when I was walking in town. The trip took me 12 days. It was the same distance as it is from Malmö to Marstrand. I slept outdoors in parks. Later on I met a girl, she was a servant at a multimillonar house in New York. Their name was Blake and she promised me to fix a job. That was the way I became a butler, but the first year I was only working in the kitchen. I only stayed one year in each place. I just wanted to earn a lot of money so I could return to Skåne. Later on I came to the house of Woolworth in New York as a butler in charge. That was the house where Barbara Hutton was living, her mother was dead and she was brought up by her aunt Jessica Woolworth and her uncle James P Donahue. Her father was also living in New York but had so much money to keep a track of that he could not manage his daughter at the same time. I was earning 300 USD per month plus the tips. In the palace of Woolworth the glamorous life was a fact. Barbara was only 16 years old when I came there and she was a marvellous good looking girl. The boys were waiting in a line for her but she was very snobbish and arrogant. She never liked me. I think it was because I was never impressed of her. Always when it was teatime I always served her in the end because she was the youngest och she was very upset because of that. She always looked at me and meant that in spite of her age she was the richest. The Woolworth family had their palaces and summerhouses all over USA but most of them were usually empty. Mostly they were staying in New York and Southampton. In one of the places they had built a palace made of marble for millions but they were never there. Parties belong to the everyday life and specially around the swimmingpool where Barbara and her rich friends were drinking champagne in goldmugs. They did not care that it was forbidden to drink alcohol. All the rich people got smuggled alcohol and every breakfast they had a lot of champagne. Everyday it came smugglers and I got my own car so I could distibute the alcohol to the different houses. One time when all the celebrities were there a lot of policemen were holding a ring around the house. The ladies diamonds were worth so much that no risks could be taken. Every policemen got their own bottle of champagne except the police in charge who got two. All the people worth to mention were at the parties of Woolworth. The closest men to President Roosevelt were very often at their house and had a lot of fun. In the end there were a playboy called Portifirio Rubirosa who visited the house. He first married a friend of Barbara and after the divorce he married Barbara. In 1929 the happy time was over as the crash on Wall Street came and followed by the deep depression. I remember one day when there were a telephone call from Wall Street to the uncle of Barbara. I connected the call to him but I was also listening. I understood that it was about shares. I had started to buy shares for my savings so therefore I was very interested. They informed him that 48

the value of some shares had alarming dropped. Donahue did not immediately understand what it meant but I sold my shares immediately. Than the real crash came where Donahue made enormous losses on shares. He made suicide. 49

Later on I finished my job and went to Chicago to another millionar. Once again it was a girl who fixed it for me. It was too many gangsters so I did not like it. By accident I was told that 87 lots were on sale outside Boston close to my sister. I went there and bought them for 1600 USD. Today I have 56 left and I don't sell them under USD. After I had done this successful bussines I thought I could go back to Skåne and 1932 I was back in Malmö with 7000 USD in my pocket. His first need and thought was for work - a job - where to find one. The newspapers seemed to be his only friend. They offered hundreds of positions, and a few days ago, through The Herald and Traveller, he secured a good job as piano-tuner at the Charles M Steiff Piano Company of 146 Boylston street. Young Bondeson came to see The Herald and Traveler help wanted editor yesterday and his story won todays prize in gold. Tells Life Story. Bashfully he told a most interesting story of his life in Sweden and of his dreamings of America, finally realized by coming here. Carl Bondeson now lives at at 84 West Newton Street. He is 23 years old of age and unmarried. Although he was a farm laborer in Sweden - in America he turned to manufactoring work having always thought of America as a manufactoring nation. After a few days in this country he obtained work as an apprentice in a piano factory and after acquiring sufficient knowledge of the trade secured his first real position through The Herald and Traveler help wanted advertisment. He might never have won the $10 in gold for he did not understand The Herald and Traveler offer until one of his newly acquired American friends explained it to him and following his friends advice he came to see the editor. Considerably pleased with the $10 in gold, he stated that he was going to start a bank account with it. The Herald and Traveler help wanted ad rendered its service. It found an experienced man for the employer and a needed start on his first job for a stranger in a strange land, It makes little difference what you need a Herald and Traveler classified advertisment will go and find it. 51
