Office hours posted on the course website: Textbook and Materials: Textbook: ENGR 100: Introduction to Computer-Aided Design Note: This is a customized textbook for Drexel University and is only available through the Drexel Bookstore. This textbook also includes a free download code for Creo Parametric 2.0 Student Edition. Also note that this text is different from that used last year so do not attempt to purchase one from a former student. This book contains chapters from Designing with Creo Parametric 2.0 by Michael Rider (2013) ISBN: AutoCAD 2014 Tutorial - First Level: 2D Fundamentals by Randy Shih (2013) ISBN: Software: AutoCAD 2014 and Creo 2.0 Specific Course Description: To introduce students to Computer Aided Design (CAD) using AutoCAD and Creo Parametric software packages. Students will learn a variety of 2-D and 3-D modeling techniques to support the engineering design process. The skills learned in this course can translate to other CAD packages. Pre-requisites or Co-requisites: N/A Specific Goals for the Course : 1. Understand the purpose and applications of Computer Aided Design 2. Demonstrate knowledge of the 2-D and 3-D design software through completion of assignment problems 3. Conceive designs and implement them using 2-D and 3-D software within given constraints Page 1

2 Student Outcomes: (a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering students learn to design engineering drawings and geometries (c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability students learn to make engineering drawings of parts and assemblies students learn to make engineering drawings of parts and assemblies (e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems students learn to formulate problems through 2 design projects (a house floor plan and an assembly that displays their new skills) (g) an ability to communicate effectively parts and drawings of parts are labeled to communicate scale and purpose (k) an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice. AutoCAD and CreoParametric 2.0 are used for all projects and assignments Brief List of Topics to be Covered: AutoCAD fundamentals Basic object construction tools Geometric construction and editing tools Creating simple objects Patterns and copies Revolved protrusions, mirror copies, model analysis Course Description: To introduce students to Computer Aided Design (CAD) using AutoCAD and Creo Parametric software packages. Students will learn a variety of 2-D and 3-D modeling techniques to support the engineering design process. The skills learned in this course can translate to other CAD packages. Troubleshooting AutoCAD/Creo Parametric Problems: If you are having trouble with your installation of AutoCAD or Creo Parametric you can ask for help from the coop students in Lebow 132 during open lab hours on Mondays from 9 am to 5 pm. Lecture: Online: Students are required to watch an online lecture prior to attending lab each week. Most lectures require submission of an assignment upon completion. Lectures can be found under the course resource tab on the course website. Laboratory: 1 hour/week. Lab sections will be held in several rooms. Please check your course schedule for the room assignment for your section. Laboratory attendance is mandatory. Students missing more than two lab classes without permission from their lab instructor will not receive credit (NCR) for the course. Assignments: In-class and weekly homework often based on the on-line lecture. In-class assignments are due by the end of the same week s lab period. Homework assignments are due before the start of the Page 2

3 following week s lab period. All assignments must be uploaded to BbLearn. Late assignments will not be accepted. Midterm project: Students will be required to draw a floor plan of a building. Detailed requirements will be posted on the course website. Late assignments will not be accepted. Final project: Students will be required to draw an object of their choosing using Creo Parametric. Students will be given a one week period to complete this project. Project ideas must be submitted to the TA for approval in week 8. Detailed requirements will be posted on the course website. Late assignments will not be accepted. Extenuating Circumstances: Extensions to any type of assignments may only be given by the course coordinator and will only be granted for medical reasons with a doctor s note and other circumstances or accommodations as granted by an undergraduate adviser or other offices on campus. Grading criteria: ENGR 100 is a pass/fail course. A minimum grade of 70% is required to pass this course. Your grade is derived from the four following components. Lecture assignments - 10% In-class assignments - 15% Homework assignments - 20% Midterm project - 20% Final project - 35% Academic Policies: In addition to the course policies listed on this syllabus, course assignments or course website, the following University policies are in effect: Academic Dishonesty: Student Handbook Code of Conduct: e_of_conduct/ Students with Disability: Course Drop Policy: The instructor may, at his/her/their discretion, change any part of the course during the term, including assignments, grade breakdowns, due-dates, and the schedule. Such changes will be communicated to students via the course web site Announcements page. This page should be checked regularly and frequently for such changes and announcements. Other announcements, although rare, may include class cancellations and other urgent announcements. Academic Misconduct Plagiarism: drexel.edu/studentaffairs/community_standards/studenthandbook/general_information/code_of_conduct Plagiarism is the inclusion of someone else s words, ideas, or data as one s own work. When a student submits work for credit that includes the words, ideas, or data of others, the source of that information Page 3

4 must be acknowledged through complete, accurate, and specific references, and, if verbatim statements are included, through quotation marks as well. By placing his/her name on work submitted for credit, the student certifies the originality of all work not otherwise identified by appropriate acknowledgments. Plagiarism covers unpublished as well as published sources. Examples of plagiarism include, but are not limited to: Quoting another person s actual words, complete sentences or paragraphs, or an entire piece of written work without acknowledgment of the source. Using another person s ideas, opinions, or theory, even if it is completely paraphrased in one s own words without acknowledgment of the source. Borrowing facts, statistics, or other illustrative materials that are not clearly common knowledge without acknowledgment of the source. Copying, or allowing another student to copy, a computer file that contains another student s assignment, and submitting it, in part or in its entirety, as one s own. Working together on an assignment, sharing the computer files and programs involved, and then submitting individual copies of the assignment as one s own individual work. Sanction Guidelines for Violating the Academic Integrity policy: drexel.edu/studentaffairs/community_standards/studenthandbook/general_information/code_of_conduct First/all violations: If an act of academic dishonesty is determined to have occurred, one or more of the following sanctions will be imposed, depending on the severity of the offense: Reduction of a course grade An F for the assignment or exam Failure for the entire course Other action deemed appropriate by the faculty member Any of the above sanctions with the inability to withdraw. Examples of other action deemed appropriate include, but are not limited to, requiring the student to retake the exam, re-complete an assignment, or complete an assigned exercise. The decision of the faculty member and the department head shall be reported to the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, which is responsible for maintaining student conduct records. The incident will result in an official conduct record for the student(s).students may also be required to attend or complete an educational activity as determined by the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards. Second violation: Suspension or expulsion, in addition to any sanction issued from the list above. A violation of the Academic Integrity policy discovered after the conferral of a degree is grounds for Withdrawal of (Rescind) Degree. Page 4
