1 volunteering directory 2015 "Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day." - Sally Koch You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make. - Jane Goodall The impact of a touch, your smile, a kind word, a listening ear or the smallest act of caring. People live a happier life because you took time to share what you had to give. - Anon

5 TIMEBANKING If you like to volunteer and give time to your community, Timebanking is for you. Timebanking is a free community program that allows the voluntary exchange of services between members. You can earn time credits for giving your time and sharing your skills to help other members. You can then use these credits to receive services that are useful and valuable to you. It s as simple as give an hour, receive an hour: by giving one hour helping another member, you can earn one hour of time credit which can be used to receive services that you need. If you do not wish to collect hours for yourself, you can bank them into a Community Chest Different volunteering offers and requests have included handy work, dog walking, ironing, gardening, driving, hospital / nursing home visits, computer tuition, painting, flat pack construction, cleaning, admin, working bees, cooking lessons, pool cleaning. the possibilities are endless!!!
6 Everyone has different skills and knowledge to share, which is why Timebanking is so successful How does it work? Once you become a Timebanking member, you are able to search through all the offers of assistance and requests for assistance made by other members. If you see someone s offer or request that you could complete, or that you would find useful, you simply contact that person to arrange the completion of the service. Following completion of the task, the person who provided the service logs onto and registers the number of hours it took. The system then completes the exchange of time between the members involved. How do I become a member? All you have to do is register on and create a username and password so that you are able to access the system. How much does it cost to become a member? Timebanking is free to join! For more information about Timebanking contact Kogarah Community Services Neighbourhood Centre 90 Railway Parade Kogarah Ph: info@kogarahcommunity.org.au

8 Australian Red Cross Donate Blood The Mobile Blood Service often visits St George Private Hospital Cnr Montgomery & South St, Kogarah For other locations to give blood ph: or visit Calvary Health Care Sydney Ph: Voluntary work has always been integral to the provision of health care at Calvary Health Care Sydney (CHCS). We rely on you, your skills, abilities, attitude and enthusiasm, and most of all your commitment and dedication to provide holistic and compassionate care and support to our clients, families and their carers. Within the Hospital, volunteers work as buddies with the professional staff, providing comfort and care to our clients in the palliative care and rehabilitation units. With training, volunteers quickly feel at home helping our clients with dressing, gentle and relaxing foot, hand or facial massage and diversional activities, e.g. cards, art or reading the newspaper to patients. Volunteers have extra time to spend just being present with a patient or family member, offering compassionate and neutral support. Within the Palliative Care Team, the volunteer usually visits on a regular basis either as a companion to either our client or their carer, or by providing family members with respite so that they can attend to other matters. The volunteer may run errands or assist with shopping, mind the children, make a cup of tea or assist with minor practical tasks in the home, offer gentle massage and relaxation techniques. They may accompany the patient and carer to appointments or outings and assist as needed.

13 Sutherland Shire Bush Care Group Bushcare is a community-based program supported by Sutherland Shire Council whereby the community becomes involved in managing and maintaining remnant bushland areas within the shire on a voluntary basis. Sutherland Shire has over 60 urban bushland reserves covering an area of 850 hectares. These areas of bushland create an attractive environment to live, are an important recreational resource, are important for wildlife and conservation purposes and are an integral part of the scenery around the Shire. These bushland remnants also protect soils and the quality of water in our creeks and rivers and provide a graphic reminder of what the landscape and original vegetation was once like. Active management of our bushland reserves is essential. It is impossible for Council to undertake all work required to manage bushland reserves due to the large scale of the problem. Community involvement is essential to maintain and improve the quality of the Shire's bushland and maintain water quality in Port Hacking as a lot of stormwater runoff enters Port Hacking via the many bushland reserves surrounding the area. At present there are 15 Bushcare Groups working in reserves which affect Port Hacking. Some, such as Bundeena Reserve, Cabbage Tree Point, Darook Park and Kareena Park, Caringbah are directly on the foreshores of Port Hacking. Others, such as Coonong Creek Reserve and Ewey Creek Reserve are on creeks which flow into Port Hacking. If you are interested in joining Bushcare, contact Sutherland Shire Bushcare Officers Ph:

This commitment allows you to build an authentic friendship and have a lot of fun in the process.
