1 Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences Master's Degree Programme in Health Business Management (in English) Health Business Management is a multidisciplinary Master s degree programme for bachelor degree holders coming from various backgrounds. For Bachelors of Engineering who have work experience from and/or career plans to work in the restructuring social and health care public sector, or in private companies operating in the field, this is a rather unique opportunity. Innovative solutions and new business models are sought for to renew the sector: how to provide services economically and efficiently, yet maintain high quality and a human-oriented scope in all decisions and activities. Engineering graduates, business graduates, as well as graduates from Health Care and Social Services, will jointly tackle the various problem-solving situations and learning tasks. Sharing everyone s expertise becomes a value added. The HBM Master s students will be offered an environment to practice and enhance their international and communication skills in a very multicultural group of peers, staff and faculty. Lectures, seminars, workshops as well as materials and outputs are all in English. The core of the advanced professional studies includes: Health Business Economics and Business Models; Strategy, Management and Leadership; Service Innovations and Design; as well as Quality Management. Elective studies complete the skill set according to individual needs. Sufficient RDI competence is provided at an early stage of the studies. A Master s Thesis, typically a development task planned for and implemented in the organization in which the Master s student is employed, is one of the most rewarding parts of the program. Structure of Studies (60 ECTS): Advanced Professional Studies, 25 ECTS, of which * Core Advanced Studies, 20 ECTS * Research, Development and Innovation Methods and Tools, 5 ECTS Optional Studies, 5 ECTS Master s Thesis, 30 ECTS When studying on a part-time basis, the Master of Engineering degree can be obtained from the HBM Master s program in 1.5 years, with some flexibility both ways. T1415S Research and Development Skills: 5 ECTS credits The student understands the significance of RDI for organisational development. The student knows key processes and can work as a development and project manager engaged in an organisation's RDI activities. The student knows the processes and methods of project management from a project manager's perspective. S000CF90 Business Development Methods and Tools: 5 ECTS credits Page 1 / 7
2 The student is able to inspire change and lead change processes in an organisation. A set of process management and project management tools and techniques are familiar to him; he knows what and how to apply in a given situation. Quality systems improvement is an alternative approach for some participants. Organisational development skills such as team management skills have also improved. The student is well prepared to design and implement a change/development process in his partner organisation. Promoting and managing change; Process development tools and techniques; Project management: planning, organising, managing, concluding, evaluating and reporting; Quality improvement; Best practices in OD, applications in case organisations. 1 = Sufficient performance: has completed basic requirements to pass the course and has made an attempt to apply and articulate concepts and information both verbally and in writing but has not made enough effort overall. The student has demonstrated little effort, interest and motivation for individual or team activities / assignments and the output is rather weak. 3 = Good overall performance: can apply and articulate concepts and information well both verbally and in writing, certain areas of individual or team output require further attention; shows appropriate level of interest and motivation in individual and team activities. Good presentation delivery and analysis. 5 = Excellent performance in all elements of the course: shows interest and motivation in individual and team activities and assignments, fully applies and clearly articulates concepts and information both verbally and in writing. The student is able to support his/her argument with references to the recommended reading and lecture content. Excellent T1415S Health Business Management: 20 ECTS credits The student knows and understands the main drivers and trends in health business and understands the essential business models and concepts of health business. The student understands the interrelated cornerstones of the job of a leader. The student understands the role of service innovations, renewal and design in the race for competitive advantage; and is familiar with the change processes in business organizations. The student knows what causes quality, how quality is ascertained, and how quality work is managed in an organization. The student understands the cornerstones of safety and quality systems and the process development approach. S000CF69 Health Business Economics and Business Models: 5 ECTS credits The student knows and understands the main drivers and trends in health business; knows the concepts of opportunity and risk in the health business environment; understands the essential Page 2 / 7
3 business models and concepts of health business; understands different forms of health business enterprises, models and practices; can apply the acquired knowledge at work. Consumer, service and production theory; Market and competitive analysis; Current issues in health business environment; Best practices of Health Business; Business Models. 1 = Sufficient performance: has completed basic requirements to pass the course and has made an attempt to apply and articulate concepts and information both verbally and in writing but has not made enough effort overall, the assignments and/or team projects are weak and require further input. The student has demonstrated little effort, interest and motivation for class activities and course assignments. 2 = Satisfactory performance: has completed all elements of the course and can apply and articulate concepts and information both verbally and in writing but may not have made enough effort. Certain areas of the assignments/team project are lacking in detail and require further input. The student could have demonstrated more interest and motivation for class activities and course assignments. Satisfactory 3 = Good overall performance: shows can apply and articulate concepts and information well both verbally and in writing, certain areas of assignments/team project require further attention; shows appropriate level of interest and motivation in all class activities and course assignments. Good 4 = Very good overall performance or excellent in one and very good in another element of the course: shows interest and motivation in all class activities and course assignments, applies and articulates concepts and information very well both verbally and in writing. L000CG01 Strategy, Management and Leadership: 5 ECTS credits The student understands the three interrelated cornerstones of the job of a manager; is able to conceptualize the strategy of his/her parent organization; is able to establish a robust management structure for his/her own field of responsibility; is ready to take first steps as an interactive people leader in a diverse organizational context. - Overall framework of being a manager - Strategy process - Building blocks of a management structure - Fundamentals of people leadership in a diverse organizational context Further information The language of tuition is English. Excellent T1415S Elective Studies: 5 ECTS credits According to the student s individual study plan the student choose 10 ECTS from the HBM curriculum or from other Master s Degree Programmes at Helsinki Metropolia UAS or elsewhere. T1415S Master's Thesis and Maturity Test: 30 ECTS credits The student: - Understands the research, development, and innovation process - Is able to use research, development, and innovation methods and tools in real health business development work - Is able to apply theory into practice - Is able to evaluate his/her Master s Thesis process as a whole and the significance of the results from a developmental perspective - Demonstrates good academic writing and oral presentation skills S000CF91 Master's Thesis and Maturity Test: 30 ECTS credits The student is able to plan, implement and evaluate a research and development project in cooperation with working life. The student is able to apply the research knowledge of the field and RDI methods to development and problem solving in working life. In his/her work, the student shows initiative and good development and change management skills. The student is able to work independently in expert positions of the field and as a developer and reformer of working life. The student produces a written report of the research and development project and has good oral and written professional communication skills. In the maturity test the student demonstrates good knowledge of the thesis subject area and is able to communicate the results in a professional manner. Page 6 / 7
7 All parts of the thesis process according to degree programme guidelines: workshops, seminars, individual and group supervision, maturity test. The maturity test can be a press release, a publishable article, an executive summary or other informative text. The student agrees the form and target audience of the maturity test together with the thesis supervisor. Prerequisites Research methods and tools 5 ECTS credits or equivalent research and development studies. Sufficient knowledge of the subject matter.
