1 Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences Master's Degree Programme in Health Business Management (in English) Master s Programme in Health Business Management is a joint programme with students from both Engineering, Business and from Health Care and Social Services. A multidisciplinary approach is needed in finding innovative solutions and business models to renew the sector and provide the services economically and efficiently, yet maintaining high quality and a human-oriented scope in all decisions and activities. A special feature comes from the fact that this Master s degree programme invites students from diverse backgrounds, professionally, educationally, as well as culturally. Business graduates, engineering graduates, as well as the largest group, graduates from Health Care and Social Services, will jointly tackle the various problem-solving situations and learning tasks. Sharing everyone s expertise becomes a value added. Internationalization is expanding. Therefore, the HBM Master s students will be offered an environment to practice and enhance their international and communication skills in a very multicultural group of peers, staff and faculty. Lectures, seminars, workshops as well as learning materials and outputs are all in English. The core of the advanced professional studies in the HBM comes from for instance: Health Business Economics and Business Models; Strategy, Management and Leadership and Service Innovations and Design. Alternative advanced studies can be picked from a set of choices, related to sustainable leadership, customer relations, or management accounting, all linked to health care business and organizations. Sufficient RDI competence is provided at an early stage of the studies, as it is needed in planning and implementing perhaps the most rewarding part of the studies, namely the Master s Thesis, 30 ECTS. More often than not, the development task comes from and is implemented in the organization in which the Master s student is employed. The Master s Thesis process starts early enough so that measurable changes or improvements can be identified. S1115S Research and Development Skills: 10 ECTS credits The student understands the significance of RDI for organisational development. The student knows key processes and can work as a development and project manager engaged in an organisation's RDI activities. The student knows the processes and methods of project management from a project manager's perspective. S000CF89 Research Skills and Methods: 5 ECTS credits The student recognizes the essentials of research and is able to apply systematic study in practice. Page 1 / 13

2 He can utilize methodology applicable to business research projects and is able to use scientific texts and produce texts that comply in academic style. He knows how to process research knowledge into research report format. He can evaluate and improve texts and present research findings in a professional manner. A set of process management and project management tools and techniques are familiar to him; he knows what and how to apply in a given situation. Quality systems improvement is an alternative approach for some participants. Organisational development skills such as team management skills have also improved. The student is well prepared to design and implement a change/development process in his partner organisation. The student understands the interrelated cornerstones of the job of a leader. The student understands the role of service innovations, renewal and design in the race for competitive advantage; and is familiar with the change processes in business organizations. The student knows what causes quality, how quality is ascertained, and how quality work is managed in an organization. The student understands the cornerstones of safety and quality systems and the process development approach. S000CF69 Health Business Economics and Business Models: 5 ECTS credits The student knows and understands the main drivers and trends in health business; knows the concepts of opportunity and risk in the health business environment; understands the essential business models and concepts of health business; understands different forms of health business enterprises, models and practices; can apply the acquired knowledge at work. Consumer, service and production theory; Market and competitive analysis; Current issues in health business environment; Best practices of Health Business; Business Models. 1 = made enough effort overall, the assignments and/or team projects are weak and require further input. The student has demonstrated little effort, interest and motivation for class activities and course assignments. 2 = Satisfactory performance: has completed all elements of the course and can apply and articulate concepts and information both verbally and in writing but may not have made enough effort. 7 The student improve his/ her business competence skills by choosing two of three pairs of 10 ETCS study modules: Advanced accounting, Managing Customer Relations and Operations, Sustainable Leadership. S1115S Advanced accounting: 10 ECTS credits The student has formed a big picture of the changing and internationalizing business environment in which management accounting operates. He understands the necessity of management accounting and is capable of analysing and developing management accounting systems in business companies. The student understands the whole picture of accounting procedures and its key players. He is familiar with accounting processes, main accounting systems and background systems. L000CG04 Management Accounting: 5 ECTS credits The student has formed a big picture of the changing and internationalizing business environment in which management accounting operates. He/she understands the necessity of management accounting in decision-making and is familiar with the supporting systems. 8 L000CG05 Accounting Systems: 5 ECTS credits The student understands the whole picture of accounting procedures and its key players. He/she is familiar with accounting processes, main accounting systems and background systems and how they are linked to the other business processes. The student is well aware of the book keeping and accounting systems from managerial perspective and is able to utilize, influence and develop them for future purposes. - Accounting systems - Sub systems - Book keeping - Processes - Financial statements - Invoice processing - Scanning, Acceptance, Payment systems S1115S Managing Customer Relations and operations: 10 ECTS credits The student understands the role of customer relationships for competitive advantage and can apply the customer relationship approach in the working life. 9 functions of an Enterprise Resource Planning system. He/she is able to improve the management system of his partner organization with the help of an ERP system. L000CG07 Marketing Processes and Solutions: 5 ECTS credits The student understands the role of customer relationships for competitive advantage; is familiar with the marketing processes in business organizations; has the knowledge and the skills to develop, plan and implement the ways companies can aquire, sell and serve customers; is familiar with various marketing systems; able to measure and follow-up the impact of marketing actions within a multichannel environment; can apply the customer relationship approach in the working life. - Marketing Processes - Marketing Channels - Marketing systems, solutions and tools - Measurement and follow-up of marketing actions - Developing marketing processes within organizations. L000CG09 Enterprise Resource Planning Systems: 5 ECTS credits The student understands the structure and functions of an Enterprise Resource Planning system. He/she knows how ERP can help him in planning and decision-making in his area of responsibility in business. He/she is able to improve the management system of his partner organization with the help of an ERP system. Page 9 / 13

10 - Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP): the scope and functions - How reporting and performance measurement in ERP system support business decisions - Application to the student s work environment: how to benefit from ERP. S1115S Sustainable Leadership: 10 ECTS credits The student is familiar with current thinking about diversity and its management and in this context the hot issues that are faced by organizations (global or otherwise). The student will be capable of understanding the roots and implementation issues of corporate social responsibility and will be able to develop a strategic communication plan. L000CF92 Diversity Management: 5 ECTS credits The student is familiar with current thinking about diversity and its management and in this context the hot issues that are faced by organizations (global or otherwise). S/he is able to argue why embracing diversity and valuing difference are crucial to business success, for example their contribution to organizational change, innovation, and challenging stale or out of date processes and practices. Learning is made relevant to contemporary business issues in order that it is relevant to practice. Students are introduced to the multiple topics that are encompassed by the notion of diversity, particularly with regard to organizations and business, and contribute to current arguments about diversity management and their relevance in real business / organizational contexts. 11 A pre-course assignment asks that students reflect on their experiences with regard to diversity and managing diversity (full details later). Curriculum L000CF93 Corporate Social Responsibility: 5 ECTS credits At the end of this course students will be capable of understanding the roots of CSR, the critical elements of a CSR initiative, the implementation issues of a CSR initiative, developing a strategic communication plan for CSR, as well as auditing an existing CSR initiative. CSR Background and Core Issues, CSR and the Sustainability Sweet Spot, Lessons on Launching and Sustaining Sustainability Efforts, CSR as Innovation, CSR Case: Samsung, LG, Pepsi, Unilever, CSR as Global Citizenship the IBM Case, CSR in Cultural Context, Developing Strategic Partnerships between nonprofits and business. 12 S1115S Elective Studies: 10 ECTS credits According to the student s individual study plan the student choose 10 ECTS from the HBM curriculum or from other Master s Degree Programmes at Helsinki Metropolia UAS or elsewhere. S1115S Master s Thesis and Maturity Test: 30 ECTS credits The student: - Understands the research, development, and innovation process - Is able to use research, development, and innovation methods and tools in real health business development work - Is able to apply theory into practice - Is able to evaluate his/her Master s Thesis process as a whole and the significance of the results from a developmental perspective - Demonstrates good academic writing and oral presentation skills S000CF91 Master's Thesis and Maturity Test: 30 ECTS credits The student is able to plan, implement and evaluate a research and development project in cooperation with working life. The student is able to apply the research knowledge of the field and RDI methods to development and problem solving in working life. In his/her work, the student shows initiative and good development and change management skills. The student is able to work independently in expert positions of the field and as a developer and reformer of working life. The student produces a written report of the research and development project and has good oral and written professional communication skills. In the maturity test the student demonstrates good knowledge of the thesis subject area and is able to communicate the results in a professional manner. All parts of the thesis process according to degree programme guidelines: workshops, seminars, individual and group supervision, maturity test. Page 12 / 13

13 The maturity test can be a press release, a publishable article, an executive summary or other informative text. The student agrees the form and target audience of the maturity test together with the thesis supervisor. Prerequisites Research methods and tools 5 ECTS credits or equivalent research and development studies. Sufficient knowledge of the subject matter.
