1 RAMSEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS/COMMUNITY DRUG AND ALCOHOL EDUCATION PROGRAM DESCRIPTION A. RAMSEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE PROGRAM 1. Grades K-5 Students are provided the Here s Looking at You (H.L.Y.) instruction as per the lesson format recommended by H.L.Y. (taught in physical education classes) a. H.L.Y. (Seattle Program) This program focuses on drug and alcohol identification, the effects of drugs and alcohol, and builds skills which lead to informed decision making, how to make and keep friends, clarification of values, building self esteem and resisting peer pressure through refusal skills. K-1 6/7 lessons lessons 5- refresher lesson leading into D.A.R.E. b. D.A.R.E. Program-K-4 Visitations by D.A.R.E. Officers to each classroom on a periodic basis to familiarize students with D.A.R.E. and resistance building skills. (3-4 visits over 14-week period) c. D.A.R.E. Program -- Gr Grades 6-8 This program places emphasis upon developing students ability to recognize and resist the many subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with drugs and alcohol. In addition, program strategies are planned to focus upon feelings relating to selfesteem, interpersonal and communication skills, decision making and positive alternatives to drug abuse behavior. There are six-week Health Units in each grade. The drug and alcohol components are covered in an integrated fashion along with other statemandated topics. a. Grade 6 Life Skills: Emphasis is on knowing yourself, decision making, personal values, abstinence, making and keeping friends, role playing, substance abuse effects and refusal skills (6-10 H.L.Y. Lessons), drug identification, effects if drugs and alcohol, TNT (Towards No Tobacco curriculum supplements H.L.Y.) b. Grade 7 Family Life Education Anatomy-Sexuality-Abstinence Content includes effects of drugs, Sexually Transmitted Diseases,

Grade 8 Human Awareness: Course content addresses decision making, resisting peer pressure, drug and alcohol refusal skills,abstinence, role playing, advertising, pornography, child abuse, dating. self-image, suicide prevention, death and dying and getting along with others. (6-10 H.L.Y. Lessons) Drug and alcohol education is covered in an integrated format. a. Grade 9 Family Life Ed.: (10 hours drug and alcohol/a.i.d.s. 5-6 H.L.Y. Lessons) dealing with refusal skills, abstinence, role playing, decision making, self-esteem, drug and alcohol identification, addiction, recovery, binge drinking, b. Grade 10 Driver s Education: (10 hours of drug and alcohol/universal Precautions, 3-4 H.L.Y. Lessons), DUI, BAC, drug and alcohol identification and effects, fatal accidents. c. Human Awareness/First Aid: (10 hours drug and alcohol/a.i.d.s. 6-7 H.L.Y.
