It is the largest mobile operator in Europe in terms of line numbers, and it ranks first in the world by GSM customer base. It is the third largest Italian company in terms of stock market capitalisation. TIM was incorporated and listed on the Milan Stock Exchange in July It had already launched an analogue mobile radio service (TACS 900MHz) in April 1990, and had introduced the service on standard GSM in April In Italy, TIM is the sole provider of analogue mobile telecommunications services and one of four operators with the right to provide GSM digital mobile telecommunications services. From June 2001, it became one of four operators with the right to provide DCS 1800 digital mobile telecommunications services. In October 2000, TIM was awarded one of five UMTS licences put up for auction by the Italian Government, to provide third generation mobile services in Italy. Key focus areas for the company are its value-added services, including data and e-commerce applications over developing platforms, as well as increased expansion into foreign markets. Website: 202
2 Company restructure In February 1999, Olivetti purchased a majority holding in Telecom Italia and thereby acquired 60% of TIM through its Tecnost holding company. The reorganisation of Telecom Italia s corporate structure in 2000 included a plan to give TIM full control of the Group s global mobile operations from Consequently, TIM restructured its international operations into Stet Mobile Holding (SMH), which became TIM s primary vehicle for international wireless investments. TIM gained 100% ownership of SMH. Telecom Italia retained control of foreign companies providing fixed and integrated networks, and took over 100% of Stet International Netherlands (SIN) for its direct international investment activities. Olivetti plans to keep Telecom Italia and Telecom Italia Mobile as separate entities to stimulate independent partnerships with other global players Year 2001 results Revenue increased 5% to 8.36 billion, mainly due to a 14% increase in traffic minutes. Revenues from value-added services were 57%, mainly due to a 140% increase in Internet services and 35% increase in Short Mess Service (SMS). The net operating profit increased 13% to 3.23 billion, mainly due to a reduction in outside costs. Net profit was 1.9 billion. This included a 320 million writedown of the subsidiary TIM International. Major investments made during the year include: development of the GSM network, both for the development of the radio access network and the backbone network; completion of the infrastructures for the launch of data services (Wireless Access Protocol - WAP, General Packet Radio Service - GPRS); continuation of work on the development of Universal Mobile Telecommunications Services (UMTS), laying the foundations for integrated voice, data and multimedia services for access networks (radio stations and control junctions). The major cities of Bolivia and all of Chile were covered by the GSM technology by December 2000, and tests began in February 2001 to set up a GSM network in metropolitan areas of Argentina. During 2001, TIM plans to extend the links between these overlay platforms and the GSM networks of Corporacion Digitel, TIM Peru and those in Brazil. Brazil: TIM was awarded two GSM licences in Brazil in February 2001, and a third GSM licence in March 2001, thus becoming the country s leading mobile operator. The company has interests spanning the major centres in the north and south of the country, in Maxitel, Tele Celular Sul Participacoes (holding company for Telepar, Telesc and CTMR) and Tele Nordeste Celular (holding company for Telepisa, Teleceara, Telern, Telpa, Telpe and Telasa). in June 2000, Internet Service Provider (ISP) TIMnet.com was founded to provide advanced wireless Value-Added Services (W-VAS) and applications based on SMS and WAP. Peru: TIM Peru acquired the third PCS mobile licence in Peru in March 2000, and began marketing its services in January When services began, TIM Peru was the first GSM operator in the country. Website: 204
4 Venezuela: Corporacion Digitel is Venezuela s only GSM provider. The company owns a licence for standard GSM 900MHz mobile telephony and also for domestic and international long-distance and other telecommunications services, including private networks, satellite communications, wide-band services, trunking, and other Value Added Services Europe and the Mediterranean TIM has interests in mobile telephone companies in Greece, Spain, France, Austria and Turkey. In Europe, TIM was awarded three UMTS licences: in Greece, through its subsidiary Stet Hellas, in Spain with Amena and in Austria with Mobilkom. TIM s pan-european tariff, the In-Europe, was launched in April 2001; thanks to preferential roaming agreements among TIM, its foreign subsidiaries and other European partners. The In-Europe allows TIM clients to speak in an area covering 30 countries using the same tariff. Spain: TIM-affiliated operator Retevision Movil increased its customer base from 1 million to 2.4 million over the first half of 2000 and was a major contributing factor to the growth of mobile subscribers across the Telecom Italia Group. Turkey: The Telecom Italia Group won a licence to become the fourth operator of mobile telephony services. A new company, under TIM s control, is preparing to develop advanced mobile and Internet services. Research is undertaken by the Telecom Italia research division Telecom Italia Lab. Work continues on the extension of the 1800MHz network to ensure continuous coverage nationwide; at the same time, the routing service for international roaming has been optimised. The creation of the TACS GSM Delivery System (TGDS) extended SMS services to analogue customers. The Internet Protocol (IP) backbone was strengthened in 2000, and constitutes the core of a multiservice network for integrated voice and data traffic. Research into Voice over IP (VoIP) for the GSM network and SMS services for corporate sector applications are a key area of development. WAP services were introduced to the network in The services available are limited due to the low speed of data-transmission. However, TIM is developing a GPRS for data transmission on its GSM network at greater speeds. Website: 205

In January 1999, the company launched the dual GSM 900/1800 service to expand capacity. Estimates suggest that the analogue service is losing almost 100,000 subscribers net per month and it will be shut down in Through its networks TIM offers services to residential and business clients and with the introduction of prepaid services since 1996, (TIM CARD for digital and Rechargeable TACS for analogue), opened up the consumer sector. See separate reports: Italy at UMTS The Italian Government approved the results of an October auction for five universal mobile telecommunications services (UMTS) licences in November TIM successfully bid L4.68 trillion for one of the licences, acquiring 2x10MHz of paired spectrum, plus 5MHz of unpaired spectrum. The licence runs for 15 years from January 2002, and TIM is bound to cover the regional capitals during the first 30 months and provincial capitals during the following 30 months. On an international level, Telecom Italia Group is participating in UMTS bids wherever it is already present as a GSM specific operator (see International Operations, Chapter 28.3). In January 2001, TIM signed agreements with Sony Computer Entertainment and with operators KPN Mobile (the Netherlands) and NTT DoCoMo (Japan) to develop Internet services on the mobile network using UMTS technology. Website: 206
6 28.6 SERVICES Domestic mobile The company offers TACS, GSM, paging and data transmission services. Telecom Italia Mobile has roaming agreements with 49 GSM operators in some 32 countries. A range of different pricing plans are available to cater to different customer needs Corporate services For the medium-large company sector, in which the TIM intends to maintain an effective presence, services available includes TIMDuo, which allows companies to charge employees for personal traffic while benefiting from discounts on total traffic. The Numero Verde Mobile (Mobile Toll-free Number) is also available. A special trademark and customer care service were introduced and are to be launched on a dedicated Website in For small and medium-size companies, TIM introduced the 2-4 service in 2000, offering basic rates and customised services for companies which connect 2 to 4 TACS or GSM subscriptions Prepaid services In 1996, the company launched prepaid rechargeable cards with spectacular success. The cards provide value-added services including voic , call transfer, call waiting, call hold and emergency numbers. The company offers different tariff profiles for domestic customers, including the AutoRicarica 190 (self-recharging prepaid card), Long TIM, Duetto, and.the Superpower 32K card. The Superpower 32Kb is a GSM extended memory card giving direct access to all the Value-Added Services. TIM also promoted alternative ways of recharging prepaid cards using Bancomat, and allowed customers to subscribe without activation charges or with free SMS and voice traffic offers in By September 2000, the company had over 20 million prepaid subscribers, more than 85% of all mobile users, up from 82% at the end of Data and value-added services TIM introduced messaging services called ScriptTIM in This service reached a record level of over seven million messages per day over the TIM network. The SMS was extended to TACS in A discounted loyalty scheme was offered and the Long TIM rate was extended to all users. Agreements were also made with major banks for mobile banking and online trading. The first half of 2000 saw TIM enhance its range of value-added services under a new i-tim trademark and platform. The platform enables WAP services, SIM ToolKit technology, voice information and UNI.TIM applications. UNI.TIM provides free Internet access and management of s, voic s and faxes through the single mobile telephone number. Among i-tim services, Easy Buy enables GSM customers to purchase goods and pay bills through a secure connection. The i-tim services also make it possible to access the Internet directly. The content will be developed with Seat-Tin.it and Yahoo! Europe. TIM was the first Italian operator to allow banking transactions over a secure application system. This security was developed with Oberthur Card System and SSB and, once the number of the terminal is known, permits direct communication between the SIM card and SIM Toolkit application. The SIM Toolkit operates across the switching junctions of the TIM network. Website: 207
7 Distribution chain TIM owns a distribution chain that covers most of Italy. By mid-2000, TIM products and services were marketed at more than 85,000 points of sale, consisting of 1,752 Standard Dealers diversified into 4,773 shops; 15 large-scale retailers with 282 points of sale; 80,000 points of sale in the distribution channel; 113 Telecom Italia shops and 71 Il Telefonino shops CONTACT DETAILS Telecom Italia Mobile Via A.
