Challenging Today Changing Tomorrow Have you got the right tools in your toolkit? Exhibition & Seminars, Surgeries & Networking Take away: Tools & Techniques Resources New Ideas Information will be circulated to management network members as soon as it is finalised. Regional Innovation Fund Exercising the SHA Duty to Promote Innovation High Quality Care for All was published in June 2008 and outlined a legal duty for Strategic Health Authorities to innovate. Often innovation has been defined narrowly, focusing solely on research, when in fact innovation is a broader concept, encompassing clinical practice and service design. Service innovation means people at the frontline finding better ways of caring for patients improving outcomes, experiences and safety. Broadly, there are four ways in which the SHA will support innovation: support invention support adoption - i.e. of new ways of working from outside the NHS support diffusion - the spread of good practice build the innovation and improvement culture
3 The Regional Innovation Fund Innovation is supported through the new Regional Innovation Funds (RIF) held by the SHA for identifying, growing and disseminating innovation. The South Central RIF is expected to be 5million in financial year and this will be used in a number of ways to support the identification of locally new ways to address health priorities within the SHA area. Key Principles Some important Key principles apply to the use of the fund: The fund will support the QIPP agenda The fund will be used to pump prime schemes that are locally new. Innovation is in part about creating evidence, and funding can be used to support the building of local evidence about new ways of working, new products and new systems. Supported applications will address local priorities Funds can only be awarded to NHS organisations Return on Investment is a key consideration Clinical Leadership innovations will be approved by clinical leaders For more information please contact; duncangoodes@southcentral.nhs.uk Mentoring Skills for Managers and Leaders We are pleased to report that due to the popularity of these mentoring workshops, we have extended the programme (flyer attached and application form attached) and therefore have a few places left on Wednesday 21 st July, Wednesday 8 th September and Wednesday 29 th September with additional dates now on Wednesday 6 th October, Wednesday 10 th November and Wednesday 1 st December for band 7 and above. 7 Espace espace is a NHS community based online collaboration tool dedicated to improving healthcare and wellness by sharing knowledge and experiences of technology enabled change. It uses the power of the web to make it easier for NHS professionals to work together whenever and wherever they need to. espace brings improved information sharing, enhanced communications and supports new and existing networks and communities. There has been some interesting recent publicity following the publication of the Francis Report into events at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust and the associated report on Assuring the Quality of Senior Managers. IHM has been developing for the last year, its own Accreditation Scheme for managers which will be launched over the next couple of months and may be of interest to network members. There will also be some local regional events within IHM South Central and you may be interested in the Accelerated Lean Skills Programme in Oxford from 29 th June to 1 st July This year s Annual Conference Managing Risk and Awards Dinner will be held at the University of Oxford on 21/22 September 2010 and the cost to members will be significantly less than for nonmembers! The IHM regional group is also planning a couple of relevant events leading up to the conference, based in different localities. If you want to find out more, see the IHM website or contact the membership helpdesk on or the local link Mik Horswell on mikh@micklefield.demon.co.uk Foundations for the Future The University of Reading is holding an open evening for NHS staff who are interested in finding out how they can flexibly study for a Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or Masters in Health and Social Care Management. To find out more, look on the website; To find out what current students think of the programme go to; ed-hscm-studentprofiles.aspx ed-hscm-home.aspx
8 Milestones We have reached the time of year when many managers are reviewing objectives for the year ahead and updating PDPs. With this in mind, now could be an ideal time to start studying for an accredited postgraduate module which can be completed in less than 10 weeks and with no exam (just a work-based assignment which will benefit both you and your organisation). The SHA is still offering 100 bursaries (which halves the cost). To find out more, go to: _ milestones.pdf and NHS Midlife Check A free, online lifestyle assessment service for adults aged 40 and over has been launched by the Department of Health. NHS MidLifeCheck is an innovative preventative health tool, designed to help midlifers positively change their lifestyle behaviours and improve their quality and length of life.
