1 Fort Worth Christened INSIDE Big repair services come in small packages...page 3 Modular Construction makes RBM contract sail...page 3 Life on the road at the 2011 Trade Shows...Page 4 Team SSC ready to meet U.S. Navy challenge...page 6 The LCS Fort Worth was christened in a December 4, 2010 ceremony held at MMC in Marinette, Wis. Numerous dignitaries, members of Congress, and Naval Flag Officers were present for the launch, including United States Representative for 12th District of Texas Kay Granger, the ship s sponsor. The invocation was offered by Chaplain Manuel A. Biadog Jr., Commander, U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps. Music was provided by the Navy Band, Great Lakes. Just prior to the launch of the 389- foot vessel into the Menominee River, Congresswoman Granger christened Fort Worth with the traditional smashing of a champagne bottle across the ship s bow. Serving as the USS Fort Worth s sponsor is one of the proudest moments in my career, Congresswoman Granger said. This is just the beginning of a commitment I am making with everyone in Fort Worth to all those who will sail on the ship over the course of her life. The enthusiastic residents of our fine city and I have pledged to take great care of this magnificent ship and its crew. With grit and tenacity, we will once again demonstrate our community s key principles of service and patriotism. In March 2009, the U.S. Navy awarded the Lockheed Martin-led industry team a contract to construct the Fort Worth. Just 20 months later, the ship was 80 percent complete. Continued on Page 2 U.S. Navy Awards Contract for 10 Additional Littoral Combat Ships The U.S. Navy has awarded a Lockheed Martin-led industry team a fixed-priceincentive-fee contract to construct up to 10 Littoral Combat Ships (LCS). Marinette Marine Corporation, a Fincantieri company, will construct the ships in Marinette, Wisconsin, and naval architect Gibbs & Cox will provide engineering and design support. The Lockheed Martin team s Littoral Combat Ship is designed to confront rapidly changing global threats while providing a cost-effective solution in an era of tight budgets, said Lockheed Martin Chairman and CEO Bob Stevens. 2 Christening continued from Page 1 United States Representative Kay Granger is the sponsor of the LCS Fort Worth. Now formally christened and launched, Fort Worth will continue to undergo outfitting and testing at Marinette Marine before delivery to the Navy in In addition to Marinette Marine Corporation, the team for Fort Worth includes naval architect Gibbs & Cox as well as best-of-industry domestic and international companies. It is an incredibly rewarding experience to see Fort Worth launch on time and on budget, said Orlando Carvalho, President of Lockheed Martin s Mission Systems and Sensors business (MS2). The team s strong performance and hard work in bringing Fort Worth to this point illustrates our ability to meet the Navy s need for a class of affordable, multi-mission combatants. Master of Ceremonies Dan Shultz, Lockheed Martin Vice President and General Manager of Ship and Aviation Systems (SAS), explained that the name Fort Worth continues the practice of naming the agile LCS vessels after American midsized cities, small towns and communities. As we celebrate the christening of the nation s third LCS, we are reminded that we are also here to celebrate the ideals of the city of Fort Worth and all they represent, Shultz said. For more than 150 years, the patriotic citizens of this great city have supported the Navy and all of our men and women in uniform. I am confident that this ship and her crew will defend the noble ideals for which the ship is named, protecting our country and defeating enemy threats. Also on hand for the festivities were Dr. Giuseppe Bono, Chief Executive Officer of Fincantieri; Fred Moosally, President and Chief Executive Officer of Fincantieri Marine Group; the Honorable Michael Moncrief, Mayor of Fort Worth, Texas; the Honorable Robert Harbick, Mayor of Marinette, Wisconsin; the Honorable Steve Kagen, United States Representative from the 8th District of Wisconsin; Ms. Marillyn Hewson, Executive Vice President of Lockheed Martin Electronic Systems; Rear Admiral David Lewis, United States Navy, Program Executive Officer Ships; Rear Admiral Frank C. Pandolfe, Director Surface Warfare Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations; The Honorable Sean Stackley, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Research Development and Acquisition; the Honorable Bart Stupak, United States Representative from Michigan s 1st District; and the Honorable Gordon England. Mr. England served as the first Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security under the administration of President George W. Bush. Mr. England also served as the 73rd Secretary of the Navy. Others in attendance included representatives from the Italian and Republic of Korea embassies. We are here to celebrate the ideals of the city of Fort Worth and all they represent. Prior to constructing Fort Worth, the Lockheed Martin-led team designed and constructed USS Freedom (LCS 1), which was deployed in February and is now based in its homeport of San Diego, California. USS Freedom was christened in 2006 and delivered to the Navy in The LCS will be the backbone of the Navy s 300-ship fleet. Fast and flexible, the vessels will be used to hunt submarines, drug smugglers, pirates and terrorists, as well as support troops on the ground by providing fire support from the sea. They are capable of relaying communications around the world and supporting unmanned aerial vehicles such as Predator drones. Further, the LCS will be a valuable tool in clearing mines and keeping vital sea lanes open in the Persian Gulf. The ships are able to operate close to shore and insert or pick up special operations forces in hostile areas. Prior to the launch, Richard McCreary, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marinette Marine Corporation, thanked the more than 1,000 employees who worked on the construction of the ship. Today, Fort Worth sits on the launch ways ready for her first taste of water and ready to chart her course as the newest addition to the world s finest Navy, McCreary said. We are all proud to have played a role in her creation. Repair: Anytime, Any Place Cleveland Ship Repair Company The Fincantieri Marine Group s repair specialist is Cleveland Ship Repair Company, a relatively small company with big capabilities. The company has evolved over the years from a small, 4,000- square-foot Quonset hut to a 12,000-square-foot facility with overhead cranes, a 400-ton press brake and a modern CNC burning machine, said General Manager Kyle Fries. We ve also acquired full-service welding trucks, truck cranes, crew vans and other mobile repair equipment. CSC specializes in on-site and mobile repair. Our facility is much smaller than the other yards and therefore doesn t have large production shops or dry docks, Fries said. We do the majority of our work on-site, away from our shop. The equipment such as a barge crane, workboat, service trucks and truck cranes is set up for on-site repairs at a dock in Cleveland or other regional ports, or underway performing repairs as the ship is sailing from one port to another. CSC s full-service fabrication shop is located along the Cuyahoga River. RBM Contract Ahead of Schedule 180 vessels have been delivered. Continued on Page 8 In 2006, Marinette Marine Corporation was awarded the contract to build the U.S. Coast Guard s Response Boat Medium. The vessels, which are being built at ACE Marine in Green Bay, Wisconsin, are replacing the U.S. Coast Guard s aging fleet of 41-foot utility boats. To date, 37 of an expected We ve ramped up our facility at ACE our Aluminum Center of Excellence to handle the increased production rate, said MMC Vice President of Government Programs Vice Admiral USN (Ret.) Terrance Etnyre. We re doing that with fewer people than we thought, which is an indication of the effectiveness of our lean manufacturing facility that we put in place. The RBM is designed to meet Coast Guard mission requirements for search and rescue; port, waterway, and coastal security; drug interdiction; and migrant interdiction. The RBM will also support marine safety, aids to navigation, marine environmental protection Continued on Page 5 LCS Contract Award continued from Page 1 This team s strong performance will enable the Navy to deploy a class of affordable, multi-mission combatants to address the nation s needs for decades to come. We are extremely proud to provide the U.S. Navy with our team s LCS, said Fincantieri CEO Giuseppe Bono. This contract highlights one of our firm s core beliefs: The answer to tough competition is to think and act globally, bringing the best together into a single offering. 2 3

3 Life on the Road - Trade Shows 2011 You don t need to remind MMC s Cathy Windberg or Bethany Skorik to pack lightly. They re veterans of the many trade shows attended each year by members of the Fincantieri Marine Group. Despite the hazards of missed flights, misrouted luggage, airport delays and harrowing cab rides, both agree that meeting clients from all over the country is a rewarding experience. It provides us with a wonderful opportunity to visit with our many customers in a relaxed environment, said Windberg, Executive Assistant to Marinette Marine Corporation President and CEO Richard McCreary. Skorik, who is MMC s Business Development Coordinator, agrees wholeheartedly. It s our chance to showcase our superior vessels built by some of the world s most experienced master craftsmen, she said. Trade shows are serious business, and they present solid marketing opportunities. Large shows, like the International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans, draw more than 10,000 visitors, while defense shows, such as the Surface Navy Association, draw senior military officers and defense professionals from all over the world. On hand in the FMG booth are FMG shipbuilding and engineering professionals who greet customers and answer their questions. In today s business environment, customers from both the government and private sectors are extremely cost-conscious and are under pressure to get more for less, said MMC Vice President of Sales and Marketing Floyd Charrier. Trade shows provide the opportunity for us to explain in detail how lean manufacturing, pre-outfitting and modular construction techniques employed by the FMG shipyards can deliver your next construction project for less. Shipping 2011 Conference March Stamford, CT Sea-Air-Space April National Harbor, MD Tugs and Barges May Stamford, CT Surface Naval Association August TBD - San Diego, CA Homeland Security Symposium September Arlington, VA Expeditionary Warfare October Panama City, FL Ferries International November Boston, MA International WorkBoat Show December New Orleans, LA Call Floyd Charrrier at to learn more about the world-class ships built by the Fincantieri Marine Group Companies. Response Boat Medium continued from Page 3 and defense readiness missions. The RBM was built using modular or component construction methods. The advantages are numerous. One of the advantages of component construction is that it allows you to do pre-outfitting, said ACE Production Manager Tom Buske. What I mean by that is being able to put as many of the components as possible into that particular module prior to going to an assembly saves a lot of time that would be taken up by people having to climb in and out of a boat hauling materials. Being able to pre-outfit is huge. The vessel has several notable characteristics and features. The RBM is a 45-foot, all-aluminum boat with twin diesel engines and water jet propulsion. It includes multiple navigation displays, a wireless crew communication system, an infrared camera, shock mitigating seating and a climate-controlled cabin. Unlike the 41-foot UTB, the RBM has the ability to self-right should it ever capsize, allowing it operate in higher seas and improving safety Being able to pre-outfit components is huge. for the crew and any rescued survivors. For example, the RBM s survivability parameters are 12- foot seas and 50 knots of wind, whereas the UTB s limits are 8- foot seas and 30 knots. The RBM also has fore and aft machine gun mounts interoperational with the Rescue 21 communications system. The RBM has a top speed in excess of 40 knots and cruises at 30 knots. This will allow the Coast Guard to perform its duties more efficiently with improved safety, and allow a crew to arrive at a rescue site more quickly and in better condition.
