1 SECTION NOx, CO AND NATURAL GAS DETECTION, MONITORING AND ALARM CONTROL SYSTEMS PART 1 - GENERAL 1.01 Section Includes A. Requirements for provision of the Natural Gas (CH4), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Oxides of Nitrogen (NO2) gas monitoring and control systems, and associated wiring and interfaces with the BMS Building Management System. B. CO and NO2 gas monitoring and control systems shall be provided for the bus parking garage, and bus maintenance shop. Natural gas and carbon monoxide (CO) leakage gas detection systems shall be provided for the 1 st Floor Boiler Room, Pressure Wash Room, and 2 nd Floor Janitor Room. A natural gas leakage detection system shall be provided for the 1st Floor Gas Meter Room. C. Provide a panel mounted remote interface and control panel, wall mounted at an elevation of 5-feet above finished floor level, at the following spaces 1. Immediately outside of entrance of pressure wash room. One panel for boiler room and the other for pressure wash room. 2. Immediately outside of entrance of Janitor room, in the corridor. 3. Garage ventilation control panel is located at vaulting area. 4. Maintenance shop control panel is located at maintenance bay. D. The remote interface and control station shall consist of a 10.5-inch TFT color display with alarm beacon. The services of the manufacturer s technical representative shall be enlisted for supervision of system start-up, testing, calibration, and training of the Authority s designated personnel Submittals A. Shop Drawings 1. Manufacturers data, manufacturer s specifications and details, and detailed schedule indicating manufacturer, model number, device tag number, description, information and instructions pertaining to assembly, operation, maintenance, calibration and performance specifications of all components, location and any applicable notes or comments. 2. Detailed narrative automatic control sequence indicating the function of each device and strict compliance as indicated in the control diagrams and sequences of the Contract Drawings. 3. System schematics, flow diagrams, floor plans and point-to-point wiring diagrams and schematic wiring diagrams. Indicate locations of all sensors and monitoring/alarm panels. Identify devices with identification tag for cross-reference to bill of materials and catalog data. 4. Coordination shop drawings complete with all point-to-point wiring diagrams and schematic control diagrams. The submission shall be fully coordinated and inclusive of the specified requirements of the gas detection system monitoring and alarm control requirements Deliverables A. Operating Manuals to serve as training and reference manual for aspects of day-to-day maintenance and major system repairs and shall include: B. Principles of operation and detailed narrative sequences. 1. Manufacturer s specifications. 3/20/ DOMESTIC WATER PIPING VALVES

The control narratives for each system component using the proper instrumentation tag number cross-referencing and defining the exact level of electronic signals controlling various final control elements. 3. Instructions for regular sensor replacement and regular calibration procedures and maintenance. C. Maintenance Manuals to serve as training and reference manual for all aspects of dayto-day maintenance and major system repairs and shall include: 1. System layout and interconnection schematic diagrams. 2. Charts showing normal operating conditions and significant diagnostic trouble shooting procedures. 3. Routing preventive maintenance procedures and corrective diagnostic trouble shooting procedures. 4. Parts list with manufacturer s catalog numbers and ordering information. 5. Lists of tools, calibration and test equipment, operating materials and supplies recommended for operating and servicing. 6. Manufacturer s installation, maintenance and catalog literature for each piece of equipment. 7. Analog functional diagrams as well as digital logic diagrams, where applicable. 8. Interlock ladder diagrams for the system showing microprocessor I/O interface with field or panel mounted instrumentation and/or equipment. 9. I/O lists describing the function, location, and address of each I/O (Analog or Digital). 10. Monitoring control panel arrangement drawings. a. Equipment brochure and service manuals for systems and equipment provided, which shall include: b. Equipment and components descriptive literature. c. Performance data, model number. d. Installation instructions. e. Operating instructions. f. Maintenance and repair instructions. g. Recommended spare parts. D. 4 E. Provide three copies of the final test reports for all systems describing the test apparatus, procedure, and results of each sensor and controller. Notes on adjustment and variances from normal conditions shall be recorded. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 General A. Manufacturers: Mine Safety Appliances, Inc., or approved equal co And NO 2 Gas Monitoring And Control System A. General 1. The CO / NO 2 Detection System shall be as manufactured by Mine Safety Appliances Corp. (MSA). Provide as shown on the plans CO and NO2 sensors and controller. Sensing element shall be solid state. Mount sensors at breathing height, 60-inches above finished floor. B. Sensor/Transmitter 1. Sensors shall be MSA DS series CO/NO2 solid state type with accuracy of 5% FS for CO. Sensors shall detect CO in a range of PPM. 2. Sensors for NO2 shall be electrochemical type with accuracy of 5% FS. Sensors shall detect NO2 over a range of 0-10 PPM. 3. Sensors shall have a RS485 output for communication with the controller, LED indicators for alarm status and power. 4. Sensors shall have operating range of 0-40C, 24VDC powered 100mA maximum. 5. Sensor calibrations shall be initiated with a magnetic initiator and auto calibration without having to open the sensor enclosure. 6. Sensors shall be housed in NEMA rated thermoplastic enclosure. 7. C. Remote Interface and Control Panel 1. Controller shall be MSA CXII, a digital with 4 line x 40 character LCD screen, 12 button keypad and LEDs for power, status, communications. Controller shall include audio/visual alarm indication. Audio shall be 93dB minimum at 0.3 meters. Controller shall be powered by 24 VAC, 0.3A. 3/20/ DOMESTIC WATER PIPING VALVES

5 2. Controller shall communicate via RS485 to up to 99 remote sensors over a 2 wire daisy chain bus. Controller shall also communicate with the building automation system over BACnet MS/TP. 3. Controller shall have 4 on board relays 10A/120V SPDT for common fault, caution, warning and alarm indications. 4. Controller shall have adjustable set points from 1-99 % FS for each sensor type with adjustable on/off delays from seconds. 5. Controller shall be capable of assigning sensors to 9 zones. 6. Controller shall communicate with remote relay modules and shall assign sensor zones actions to a particular remote relay module. 7. Remote relay module shall communicate with the controller over the same RS485 network that communicates with the sensors. Remote relay modules shall have 4 relays, SPDT 10A/120V. 8. Controller shall include logging capabilities for each alarm event up to 500 events with date and time stamping. 9. Controller shall be CSA approved. 10. D. Start-Up and Training Service: Following installation of the Carbon Monoxide / Oxides of Nitrogen Detection System, the Contractor shall make available the services of the manufacturer's factory MSA Certified technicians to inspect the system installation, complete a thorough testing calibration and commissioning of the system, and provide four separate training sessions for the Authority s designated personnel, each session of at least two hours duration. Provide the services of the manufacturer's MSA certified technical representatives for a period of three full days for initial system start-up, testing and calibration of the entire gas detection system, as well as training of the Authority s personnel. Start-up, testing and calibration of the gas detection systems shall be performed utilizing NIZT traceable challenge gases Natural Gas Leakage Detection Monitoring And Alarm Control System A. Provide as shown on the plans LEL (Lower explosive Limit or combustible gas) sensors at high points in room. Wire sensors to alarm modules. Run 1/8 ID tubing from alarm module to LEL sensor so calibration can be done while standing on the floor. Mount CO sensor at breathing height 60 AFF. Sensors shall be hot swappable with all calibration info inside sensing element. Alarm modules shall have Stainless Steel housings, LED alarm indication, 3 levels of alarm relays and Modbus RTU communication. Alarm Modules shall be 24 VDC powered. Alarm modules shall monitor up to 3 sensor each. Alarm Modules shall support non intrusive calibration via 3/20/ DOMESTIC WATER PIPING VALVES

6 an IR link. Sensor shall be MSA Range 31 for LEL and range 11 for CO catalytic bead and alarm module shall be MSA Ultima X3. B. Sensor/Transmitter 1. Catalytic Bead Sensor/Transmitter a. The catalytic bead type combustible sensor must have a demonstrated resistance to degradation of silicones and reduced sulfur gases. b. The LEL catalytic combustible sensor/transmitter shall detect for an above 100%LEL condition (over-range). This condition must be indicated on the front panel LCD. c. The interconnect wiring from the combustible transmitter to the sensor shall be a 5-wire cable. d. Set-up and start-up of the sensor/transmitter will be so that the enclosure need not be opened during this process. e. Sensor/transmitter shall be factory calibrated, ready for use out of the box. A gas check is all that is required to ensure proper operation. Sensor/transmitter shall contain no pots, jumpers or switches. 2. Sensor/Transmitter Display a. There will be a local display indicating the gas type being monitored and the concentration of gas present. The display will alternate between the gas type (1 second) and gas concentration (5 seconds). The display will be an integral part of the sensor/transmitter enclosure. The display will be visible from a minimum of 5 feet and will be present always, and will not require being turned on or off. This readout will be three, one half-inch (3 1/2") digit Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD). b. Sensor/transmitter will display 3 levels of alarm. Alarm levels will be adjustable by means of a hand held infrared controller. 3. Smart Sensor Technology a. Sensors shall be contained in sensor modules mounted external to the main enclosure. All sensor modules shall have the capability of replacement while the unit is under power without the need for tools. b. Sensor modules shall contain all relevant sensor information within the module. This information shall include sensor manufacturer date, gas type, gas range, calibration data, and default relay parameters. c. Sensor module shall store all calibration data so that the module may be calibrated off site and installed in the field without the necessity of re-calibration. The sensor module shall not require a battery or power source to store this data. 4. LED/Relay Options a. Sensor/transmitter shall have optional LED s, viewable from 50 feet, minimum. 7 b. Sensor/transmitter shall have relays. Relays shall be rated at 5 30VDC, 5 220VAC, single-pole, double-throw and consist of three for alarm levels and one for fault. All relay contact activation will be monitored. If the relay cannot activate for any reason, the trouble relay will change state. All relays shall be field selectable through a non-intrusive hand-held wireless remote control unit (Controller). Selectable features include: Alarm level, Latching / Non-latching, Upscale / Downscale, Normally-opened / Normallyclosed, Energized / De-energized 5. Other Features a. Sensor/transmitter will be capable of storing and displaying average, minimum and maximum gas concentrations over selected periods of time. b. The sensor/transmitter will give an indication of when sensor is nearing the end of its useful life by means of the front panel LCD. This indication that the sensor is nearing its useful life will be based on the sensor output. It shall not be based on the time the sensor was in service. C. Sensor Enclosure Parameters 1. Sensor/ transmitter will be a plastic enclosure designed to meet Nema 4X requirements. D. Installation and Mounting Hardware 1. A mounting strap shall be used which mounts the sensor/transmitter to a wall or similar structure. 2. The mounting strap shall attach to the sensor/transmitter via two tapped and threaded holes on the rear of the sensor/transmitter. There shall be no brackets or clamps to secure this strap to the sensor/transmitter. E. Non-intrusive Calibration Capability 1. All sensor/transmitters can be calibrated without opening any enclosures. 2. By means of a non-intrusive hand held wireless remote control unit, the sensor/transmitter will enter the calibration mode. The display of the sensor/transmitter will instruct the user on when to apply zero and span gas. The sensor/transmitter will automatically adjust its internal settings to the proper calibration values without further intervention by the user. Upon completion of a successful calibration, the sensor transmitter will exit the calibration mode. Date stamp of last successful calibration will be retained in the sensor/transmitter internal memory, with capability to be displayed on LCD. If calibration is unsuccessful for any reason, the display must show an unsuccessful calibration attempt and revert to its previous calibration settings. Use of flashlight type devices, magnets or clamp-on devices to achieve calibration is not acceptable. The acceptable method uses a transmitter, which employs a digitally encoded infrared light beam. 3/20/ DOMESTIC WATER PIPING VALVES

8 3. Furnish the owner with a 3 button hand held wireless remote control unit along with a calibration kit. Calibration kit shall include regulator, tubing, zero gas, span gas and plastic case. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 Preparation A. Transmit submittals and receivables required by this Section. B. Furnish products as indicated. C. Ensure substrates are in suitable condition to receive the work of this Section Installation A. Install natural gas CH 4, CO and NO 2 gas monitoring system controls in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions and with recognized industry practices. Coordinate with the specified BMS control system requirements. B. Electrical installations shall conform to the requirements specified herein, and to requirements of Division 26. C. Wiring shall be insulated conductors. An insulated equipment grounding conductor shall be provided in all feeder and branch circuits. D. Install controllers in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and as indicated in easily accessible and easily viewed locations, subject to acceptance by the Authority. Furnish finish work and materials to provide a controller installation that is neat and consistent with the quality of workmanship for the area of the installation. E. Provide the services of the manufacturer's MSA certified technical representatives for a period of three full days for initial system start-up, testing and calibration of the entire gas detection system, as well as training of the Authority s personnel. Start-up, testing and calibration of the gas detection systems shall be performed utilizing NIZT traceable challenge gases. F. Testing Apparatus and Reporting: Provide all test equipment and a manufacturer's representative to perform complete testing of all equipment. Test gas cylinders to be turned over the Authority shall not be used for the test procedure. The Authority shall be supplied with full cylinders of gas. Notify the Authority three days in advance of calibration, testing and adjusting. 3/20/ DOMESTIC WATER PIPING VALVES

9 3.03 Field Quality Control Test Report A. Upon completion of installation, test systems to demonstrate compliance with requirements. Coordinate with the specified requirements of the Control Sequences of Operation and the BMS operational control requirement. Submit Field Quality Control Test Report demonstrating successful conformance with specified Control Sequences of Operation for all equipment and systems, to Engineer of Record, for review and approval, upon successful completion of the field testing. B. Field correct malfunctioning units, then retest to demonstrate compliance. Replace units and/or defective components that cannot be satisfactorily corrected.
