1 Topics for surveys and assignments Finding requirements for leisure services PM&RG Product Modelling and Realisation Group Laboratory of Information Processing Science Department of Computer Science and Engineering Helsinki University of Technology P.O.Box 5400, FIN HUT, Finland

2 Assigment

3 Assignments About 3 persons per group Applying the knowledge of methods gathered in the literature survey phase Task is to gather requirements for a service for a mobile or ubicomp community The requirements must be defined in such detail that that they can be forwarded to programmers for implementation Potential user groups are existing and future mobile and ubicomp communities like teenagers, sports club, bikers, bird watchers, cinema club...

4 Assignments Each group applies selects a specific method for capturing the requirements from users or customers. First phase: study the user group and its needs with a specific method like hobbyism, contextual inquiry, variety of user-centred methods etc. Second phase: Refine the results of the first phase by the requirements engineering methods In your plan and your report you must define the process and specific methods completely. This is only a skeleton. In the seminar assignment www page there will be instructions

5 Topics for the assignments Swimmers Home entertainment and automation Kyudo archery Music community mikseri.net Other topics

6 Topic: Swimmers Target group Semi-pro swimmers Katja Koivu can arrange connection with the group Potential method Hobbyism (requires participation of Katja Koivu) Initial input Training database for the coach. Pulse counter could upload information to the database. Also swimming trip meters and pedometers could be used. Training information could be put to wrist computer and various kinds of graphs could be used to illustrated the results of the training.

7 Topic: Home entertainment and automation Target group Home entertainment network enthusiasts Ilkka Pirttimaa has volunteered to the target group Potential method Contextual design Initial input a nifty little home entertainment network based on modularity, open source contextual interview about their seriously cutting edge, innovative and just nifty home entertainment networks connecting cars and toasters, doorbells and the television requires participation of Robin Lauren

8 Topic: Kyudo archery Target group Archers Hannu H. Kari could provide access to his kyudo club Potential method Contextual inquiry Initial input The kyudo archers have cross-country competitions, in which they go to e.g. forest or some other place to compete in marksmanship. Neither the competitors nor the audience cannot get intermediate scores during the competition. In addition to the scores, also how the competitors shoot and what else happens in the competition would be interesting and bring additional excitement.

9 Topic: Music community mikseri.net Target group Music community Tomi Saarinen could provide contact to the user group Potential method Hobbyism (requires participation of Tomi) or contextual inquiry Initial input Services for users of

12 Literature survey

13 Literature survey Every group makes a literature survey on a topic that is related to assignment The survey gives a background and necessary skills for the assignments. Based on books, scientific journals, conference articles, and maybe on good and reliable web sources Follows the form of academic publication Abstract, Introduction, Background, [Content], Conclusions, References More information:

14 Schedule for the literature survey The topics are chosen on PM&RG proposes potential topics Students may propose own topics Checkpoints for the literature survey Submission of a draft version of the literature survey Submission of the final literature survey Presentation of the literature survey The survey has to be finished, reviewed and accepted by PM&RG before the group can continue to next phase

15 Literature survey topics Choose one of the following Hobbyism for gathering user needs Contextual inquiry for gathering user needs User-centred methods for finding user needs Then combine your selection with Requirements engineering Research how to obtain information about the needs of the users by a methodology you selected in the first part. Then research how to generate requirements from that information. Write a literature survey on the methods, their relation and conclude how to combine them.
