As a practical course, as well as field trips course, students will learn how to manage a warehouse for stored product, also gain practical knowledge on the technology involve in processing food and other agricultural product in industries. Develop skill on controlling of stored product pest and urban pest. Topic include pesticide formulation; preparation of pesticide formulation; role of inert ingredient; pesticide

mixing technology; calculation of active ingredient content of formulations; and knapsack sprayer calibration. COURSE OBJECTIVES The objectives of this course are to: visit warehouse and stores to learn physically how warehouse and stores are managed ; provide students with opportunities to visit bakeries, and learn how foods are baked; how leather and wood are preserved and processed for use; equip the students with the skills of how to preserved grains in bulk, in bins and in sacks against stored product pest; provide students with adequate skills on how to carrying out fumigation application; provide practical knowledge to students on pest identification, pest monitoring, produce assessment and categorization of the level of damage and crop losses; and provide practical knowledge to students on knapsack sprayer calibration and maintenance.. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES / COMPETENCIES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: (Knowledge based) write a comprehensive report on field trips and industrial visits; state the procedure for carrying out fumigation application; explain how to preserved grains in bulk, in bins and in sacks; explain knapsack calibration procedure; and identify insect species and their destructive stages and carryout appropriate control measure.

(skills) preserve grains in bulk, in sack and in silo, prepare pesticide formulation and its application. calibrate knapsack sprayer and maintenance manage warehouse and stores determine shelf life of produce in storage. GRADING SYSTEM FOR THE COURSE This course will be graded as follow Report of industrial visit 10% Assignment 10% Test 20% Practical 10% Examination 50% TOTAL 100% GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Attendance: It is expected that every student will be in class for lectures and also participate in all practical exercises. Attendance records will be kept and used to determine each person s qualification to sit for the final examination. Practical exercise will involve different insecticide formulation containers and their components to examine formulation abbreviation At the end students will recognise formulation

4 & 5 Preparation of pesticides formulation, roles of Inert ingredient, such as emulsifiers, solvents dry carrier materials stabilizer, dye; surfactant: spreaders, stickers, wetting agents abbreviation,,formulation advantages and disadvantages. The practical exercise will involve opening pesticide containers and prepare different pesticides formulations. The practical exercise will inform the students the roles of inert ingredients, adjuvant and surfactant in pesticides formulation. 6&7 Brand name abbreviation, factors to be considered before selecting pesticides formulation, pesticides mixing technology, liquid formulation i.e emulsifiable concentrate, solution,ready-to use low concentration solution, ultra- low volume and aerosol 8 Dry formulation (baits, paste, gel, dust, granules, pellets, wettable powder, soluble powder, microencapsulated, water soluble packet, fumigants. Pesticide compatibility/mixture 9 & 10 Calculation of active ingredient content of formulation and dosage of insecticides: Calculation of dissolve substance in w/w, w/v, v/v; Calculation of dilution rates of concentrates, Calculation of active ingredient, Calculation involve liquid and solid concentrate preparation and calculation of dosage for surface treatment. Exercises will involve teaching students the factors to be considered before selecting pesticide formulation. Taught students spray mixing technology and differences between different liquid formulation. Students will be requested to prepare different solid pesticide formulation in the practical class. Student will be taught practical application of fumigant insecticide on grains in bulk, grains in bin and grains in sacks for long term storage. MID-SEMESTER TEST During the practical class students will be requested to do some calculations.

11& 12 Knapsack sprayer use overview; knapsack sprayer calibration Students will be taught four steps to good knapsack spraying and maintenance of knapsack sprayer Students will be divided into groups in practical class and each group will use different pesticide to calibrate knapsack sprayer ASSIGNMENT ON EFFECT OF PESTICIDES ON ECOSYSTEM 13&14 15 REVISION This is the week preceding the final examination.
