1 RP 3793 Turfgrass Pest Control Arkansas Tech University Dept. of Parks, Recreation, and Hospitality Administration Three Credits Tuesday and Thursday 9:30 10: Williamson Instructor: Dr. Glen Bishop 204 Williamson Phone: (479) Office Hours: Students are encouraged to meet with the instructor during office hours. Other times can be arranged when needed. The instructor may occasionally be unavailable during office hours to attend to other university obligations. The instructor will strive to minimize these occurrences. If possible, students should advise the instructor when they intend to visit so that other obligations will not interfere. Prerequisite or Corequisite: RP Note: The prerequisite for this course has been removed as of Fall The course this spring will be based on not having the perquisite. Course Description: An introduction to the integrated managment of pests affecting turfgrass. Maintenance practices related to pest and abiotic turfrass problems, safety, and materials. Required Text: Fermanian, T. W., Shurleff, M. C., Randell, R., Wilkinson, H. T., & Nixon, P. L. (2003). Controlling turfgrass pests (3 rd ed.). Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Prentice Hall. Additional Reading: Bohmont, B. L. (2007). The standard pesticide user s guide. Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Pearson Education. Additional readings may be assigned during the semester. 1

2 Course Objectives: As a result of this course students will: Understand the integrated pest management for turfgrass management. Understand sound turfgrass cultural practices are a vital part of integrated pest management. Understand that different turfgrass pests require different control strategies. Understand legal requirements for chemical control of turfgrass pests. Understand chemical safety practices related to turfgrass pest control. Practice communication skills. Categorize and link information. Grading: All assignments and tests will be graded on a 5 point system which corresponds to the University grading system of A, B, C, D, and F. A work will receive a 4, B work a 3, C work a 2, D work a 1, and F work a 0. Scores for all work in each category will be averaged and weighted according to the percent listed below. The resulting scores will then be added to arrive at the final grade for the class. The grading scale is listed below. Assignment Types and Weights Percent Examinations (4 at 5% each) 20 Final Exam 30 Semester Project 30 Homework, in class assignments, quizzes, participation 20 Total 100 Actual assignments and percentages may vary from those listed here. Changes will be announced to allow students to prepare accordingly. Grading Scale: > 3.5 = A = B = C = D <0.50 = F Examinations. There will be 4 examinations during the course in addition to the final. Each exam will be worth 5% of the final course grade. Students should expect the majority of questions to be short answer in format. Other question formats may be used. Tests will be graded using the following system. Each question will be worth 10 points. The score for the test will be the percentage of the total points earned by the answers. Test scores will be converted to the grading scale describe above using the following scale: > = = 3 2

3 = = 1 < = 0 Final Exam: The final exam will be worth 30% of the course grade. The final exam will be comprehensive. Semester Project. The project this semester will be to put together the ultimate turfgrass pest control Jeopardy game. The game should have a physical board, answers, and questions. Answers should have a number of difficulty levels that correspond to increasing point values as does the actual tv Jeopardy. In addition the game should have three rounds, the first round, a second round where point values double, and a final Jeopardy. Students are encouraged to work as a team on this project. Some class time will be made available for students to work together. At the end of the semester, the game will be used as a review. Student grades will be based on the number of answers and questions developed and work such as putting together the game board to make the project a success. Homework Assignments, In Class Assignments, Quizzes, and Participation. Work completed in class and homework will be worth 20% of the final grade. Participation involves being prepared for class and participating in an informed manner in class activities. Late Policy. All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date specified by the instructor unless otherwise noted. Late assignments are unacceptable. An extension may be granted at the discretion of the instructor. Extensions are more likely to be granted if requested in advance of the due date and because of a valid reason such as illness. Students may be required to provide evidence (a note from the doctor for example) of the reason an extension is reasonable. A penalty of 20% per day may apply to late assignments should an extension be granted. Any work turned in after April 29 (the last day of class) or the new due date should the student be given an extension for an assignment will not receive credit. Attendance Policy. Students are expected to attend class and be on time. Role will be kept for each class meeting to satisfy financial aid and other University reporting requirements. Credit will not be awarded for attendance. However, points may be awarded for work during class. Students who are absent may not be allowed to make up missed work. Students who are absent more than three times may be dropped from the class and or receive a failing grade. Students are expected to be on time for class. Students who are late on a regular basis may be dropped from the class and or receive a failing grade. Cheating/Plagiarism. Any student caught cheating or plagiarizing someone else s work on a test, project, or assignment will be given an F for the work. Students may be asked to provide proof of original work if there is a question of cheating or plagiarism. In addition, students may be subject to University discipline according to University policy as outlined in the Student Handbook. Student work may be submitted to web sites such as turnitin.com or others which assess student work for plagiarism. Plagiarism is using the thoughts or words of somebody else and claiming them as your own (T. Herrick, personal communication, August 16, 2002). Submission of work to the instructor implies your consent to share the work with web sites to check for plagiarism. 3

4 Disability Services for Students. In order for the instructor to make accommodations for students with disabilities or special needs, students should register with the Disabilities Coordinator. Once a student registers with Disabilities Coordinator, the Disabilities Coordinator will work with the instructor to make proper accommodations to ensure that the student has a fair opportunity to succeed in this course. Electronic Devices. While in class, please turn off all electronic devices including cell phones, beepers, and any other devices that can distract students or the instructor during class. Should your device accidentally ring, please turn it off and wait for an appropriate break in class activities to take care of the situation. Devices that become disruptive may be confiscated by the instructor. Students who continually disrupt class to take care of electronic devices may be dropped from the class and or receive a failing grade.
