Cell Biology and Advanced Microscopy - Courses Course Molecular Biology of the Cell 6 EC for all BMS tracks September coordinator: dr. Maike Stam (SILS, UvA) Theoretical course of 4 weeks to extend knowledge about the molecular basis of cell function including proteins, membranes, DNA structure, cell metabolism, protein synthesis and cellular signaling. Lectures Computer tutorials Literature assignment & presentation
Cell Biology and Advanced Microscopy Courses Course Advanced Microscopy 6 EC specific for CBAM track October coordinator: dr. ir. Mark Hink (SILS, UvA) Four weeks practical course: Hands-on experience & theory of state-of-the-art microscopy applied to cell biology. Every day: - Lecture discussing an other fluorescence microscopy technique - Tutorial session - Practicals at the dedicated microscope In the final week: Mini-research project in one of the three LCAM laboratories.
Cell Biology and Advanced Microscopy - Courses Course Clinical Cell Biology 6 EC specific for CBAM & Oncology tracks November coordinator: prof. dr. Ron van Noorden (AMC) Theoretical & practical course of 4 weeks focused on biomedical research in a clinical setting. By touring several research labs both fundamental as clinical research is illustrated Topics: Intracellular signaling (FNWI: fundamental research) Brain tumors (AMC: translational research) Diabetic retinopathy (AMC: translational research) Inflammatory bowel diseases (AMC: translational research) Antibiotic resistance (FNWI: fundamental research) Neurodegenerative diseases (AMC: translational research)
Cell Biology and Advanced Microscopy Literature Thesis Literature Review BMS 12 EC for all BMS tracks flexible period supervisor: Any scientist examiner: Approved principal investigator of UvA-FNWI Topic: Typically a self-chosen subject where the supervisor is expert in but subject that is not related to your research projects. The topic has to be approved by the exam committee Most students start their literature thesis after their first or last internship
Cell Biology and Advanced Microscopy - Program Essential formalities You must have 6 EC on Courses before you can start the internship You will be automatically placed for the Compulsory courses You need to have permission of the Exam Committee before starting an Internship or thesis Key contact: Education Service Centre, Science Park 904 tel: servicedesk-esc-science@uva.nl You need to get permission via the PEP for courses that are not Compulsory
Cell Biology and Advanced Microscopy - Internships Internship EC specific for CBAM track flexible period supervisor: Any scientist in the CBAM field examiner: Approved principal investigator of UvA-FNWI Most students start with an internship of EC in one of the three LCAM labs (at AMC, NKI or UvA) Topic has to be approved by exam committee
Cell Biology and Advanced Microscopy - Internships Description of the LCAM internship projects: Contact the principal investigator to get updates and related/new projects Dr. Joachim Goedhart Molecular Cytology, UvA Topic: Signaling pathways using histamine/p2y GPCR receptors, G-aq to PLC activation triggering downstream calcium, kinase signalling and small GTPase Contact: j.goedhart@uva.nl Dr. Mark Hink Molecular Cytology, UvA Topic: Development of quantitative microscopy techniques to study the MAPK signaling pathway Contact: m.a.hink@uva.nl

Is Cell Biology and Advanced Microscopy the programme for me? Yes if you: are interested in the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying disease are excited about visualizing cells in action using live cell microscopy you want to learn and apply advanced techniques you want to work in oncology, histology, cell biology, immunology (FNWI, NKI, AMC, Sanquin) enjoy labwork and working in a dynamic research team want to persue a scientific career in top life sciences research departments
Cell Biology and Advanced Microscopy The major objective of this track is the understanding of fundamental cell biological research in relation to human disease. This understanding comprises: 1. cell biology in the context of the healthy and diseased human body 2. the cellular basis of major human diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases, infection by viruses, bacteria and parasites, and cancer such as leukemia 3. diagnostics such as cytopathology and prenatal screening & fertility-related disorders 4. advanced microscopy including live cell imaging, correlative light and electron microscopy, confocal microscopy and the underlying biophysics More info:
