3 Program Highlights Crosby Scholar students have the option of signing up for special student enrichment programs to enhance their preparation for a secondary education. Excelencia Program helps educate Hispanic middle school girls and their families about the many opportunities that exist after high school graduation. In addition to completing the Crosby Scholars student requirements, the students along with their parents attend classes and events that target academic and career success. The students work on a curriculum called, Soy Única! Soy Latina! (I m Unique! I m Latina!) The targeted number of students for this pilot program, funded by the Women s Fund of the Winston-Salem Foundation, was 50 girls; however, 120 young women were recruited and completed this very successful program. College Bus Trips for rising eighth grade Crosby Scholars provides an exciting early awareness activity about different types of educational institutions at three area college campuses. One hundred forty-one Crosby Scholar students filled four buses in June and were given the opportunity to ask questions of students as well as admission representatives at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, and the North Carolina School of the Arts. One hundred ten high school juniors also visited UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC- Charlotte, Forsyth Technical Community College, High Point University and Winston-Salem State University during their spring break to help learn about the different programs each school offers. Students tour the campus, meet with college representatives, and are treated to lunch in an on campus dining hall. Career Day is a unique experience which exposes students to a wide range of career opportunities to consider after high school graduation. Eighth grade students who have successfully completed the sixth and seventh grade program are eligible to participate. Students explore their personality types which are matched to specific career possibilities through The Career Game, participate in a college information session, take a campus tour and attend Transition to High School workshops. One hundred fifty-three students visited Forsyth Technical Community College and learned of today s high demand employment opportunities, this past November. College Night at the Benton Convention Center gives Crosby Scholars the chance to meet face to face with representatives from colleges across the country. Over the last two years over 100 college admission counselors have attended the College Night along with 895 during 2011 and 1,062 Crosby Scholars this past October. Crosby Scholars Night at the Dash gave our students the opportunity to enjoy baseball at its finest in the BB&T ball park this past summer. Students and their families were able to purchase tickets at a discount which included game tickets along with hats, hotdogs and drinks. Hanesbrands awarded over 150 free tickets to middle school community service winners, participants in the Excelencia program, and senior Crosby Scholar officers who sat in the Hanesbrands box. Cultural Events are important parts of life especially if you attend school in or near the City of Arts and Innovation. Last spring Piedmont Opera and Hanesbrands, Inc. made it possible for Crosby Scholar students to attend the performance of The Crucible, a play required of many high school students to read and study. Approximately 100 students took advantage of this spectacular performance. Two attending students had their names drawn for $500 scholarships to be used during their first year of college. Future opportunities will include cultural experiences with The Piedmont Opera, The Winston-Salem Symphony and the Arts Council Theatre. Reaching Academic Potential Program (RAPP) through funding from the Stephenson Pope Babcock Foundation provides additional academic assistance and mentoring to 9th grade students to enhance academic success. Right Decisions - Right Now: Be Tobacco Free. is a school-based youth tobacco prevention program with a focus on decision making skills created by Lifetime Learning Systems, Inc. and funded by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. In the summer of 2012, Crosby Scholars sponsored a 4 day summer camp to encourage students to remain tobacco free for life. During the three sessions 139 students in grades 6 10 were offered this opportunity. Lunch was provided daily and each camp session included a local field trip. Breakfast of Champions Golf Tournament Every year, Crosby Scholars create unforgettable stories through their academic accomplishments, community service projects, and athletic pursuits. The Breakfast of Champions gives each person invested in the Crosby Scholars program the opportunity to applaud these successes. This year s guest speakers, Dr. Kenneth Peacock, Chancellor of Appalachian State University, and Mr. Anson Dorrance, Head Coach for UNC-Chapel Hill s Women s Soccer team, reminded the audience, on May 22nd at Bermuda Run Country Club, that success does not come easily. There are certain attributes of successful people, and each person must choose to foster these characteristics. Student speaker, Treyaun Fulton, Crosby Scholars Class of 2012, also graced the podium and emphasized the characteristics of his success in his remarks on determination, which won him the first Joyce Kohfeldt Determination Award. Undoubtedly, Treyaun, and many of the other Scholars in attendance as well as the close to 300 guests, will thrive in the life stories they choose to write for their futures. Crosby Scholars Invitational Perfect weather set the stage for the 8th Annual Crosby Scholar Invitational following the annual Breakfast of Champions. Under the leadership of Paul Fulton, 74 corporate and individual sponsors, along with local and national celebrities, made the tournament an unqualified success for the eighth consecutive year while raising $200,000 for programs and scholarships. This was the inaugural year of the Paul Fulton Cup whose unveiling occurred during the Breakfast of Champions. This trophy was created to honor the philanthropic work of Paul Fulton with the Crosby Scholars Program, and to recognize the winning golf team of the Crosby Scholars Golf Invitational each year. The first recipient was the Vulcan Materials and The Malloy DuBose Syndnor Wealth Mangement Group of UBS team with players Mitchell Whittaker, Will Sydnor, Tyler Covington, Bryan Spach and celebrity Al Wood. Plans are already underway for the 9th Crosby Scholar Invitational to be held on Tuesday, May 21st, 2013.
