NSW Professional Support Co-ordinator POSITION DESCRIPTION BICULTURAL SUPPORT CONSULTANT ROLE A Bicultural Support Consultant engaged by Bicultural Support can offer time- limited, off- site, specialist cultural, language & inclusion support for supporting the service to enrol and settle a child or children. This support can be provided when a child/ren from CALD, Indigenous or Refugee background is enrolled (or enrolling), into a service. Support is provided in collaboration with the service, ISA or IPSU. ACCOUNTABILITY To education and care services stakeholders as per IPSP Guidelines. To the Bicultural Support Coordinator, Program Manager, Executive Director and Board of Directors of Ethnic Child Care, Family & Community Services Co- operative Ltd (ECCFCSC). SELECTION CRITERIA Essential Certificate III in Children s Services or relevant children s services qualifications. Experience with working in education and care services. Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Knowledge and a good understanding of the principles of Access, Equity and Multiculturalism. Knowledge and a good understanding of issues effecting people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD), Refugee and Indigenous Communities. Good understanding of access issues to child care services by CALD, Refugee and Indigenous Communities. Ability to work as a part of a team. Sound communication skills. 4 INFORMATION IN RELATION TO DELIVERY OF BICULTURAL SUPPORT Bicultural Support can support education and care staff in the following areas: Facilitating communication between eligible services and families by: Assisting educators in communicating with culturally diverse families and children (for example, interpreting meetings between parents and educators, providing verbal translation of enrolment documents, and providing educators with key words & phrases that can be used to communicate with the child). Facilitating cultural awareness by: Assisting eligible ECEC services to better understand particular ethnic backgrounds, cultural experiences and child rearing practices of the children and families. Enabling the exchange and sharing of information between staff and parents about the child and family life. Providing educators with an understanding of relevant cultural issues. Supporting curricula or programming by: Advising on culturally and linguistically appropriate practices and a culturally inclusive curriculum. Advising on programs or resources that support the service to maintain the child s bilingualism. Advising on programs and resources that support the development of English as a second language. Advising on programs and resources that assist newly arrived children and families from Refugee background. Supporting resources and linkages by: Providing educators with information, where available, about relevant community resources and services to support the inclusion of culturally diverse children and families. Providing bicultural advice and support to ISAs as required. Working with the IPSU to support the cultural inclusion of Indigenous children in CCB funded Children s Services ensuring Bicultural Support meets program requirements. 25/35

Providing settlement and community support services to families and children. Providing support that is available through existing programs eg, clients of the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) using child care while they are attending English language tuition. If educators want to apply for a job with a new employer after 15 June 2013, they need to obtain their own Working With Children Check (at a cost of $80, valid for five years). To do this, go to and complete an online application form. 2. Once the form is submitted, an application number is issued. Educators need to take this application number and proof of identity to a motor registry or government access centre before the application can be processed. 3. Educators then provide their application number or their WWCC number (once their application is processed) to any service they apply to. 5
