3 Introduction Police officers are there to help us. To become a Police officer, you usually need to go to training academy for one year. They need lots of gear to do their job. Police officers use many types of transportation. They also help with crime prevention and make arrests. K-9 Dogs are a big part of being a Police officer. Some officers use them in their work. Also, law enforcement officers have to help with public safety on our roads. Police officers are an important part of our community. Did you know that girls can be police officers too? 4 Gear Law enforcement officers need lots of gear to do their job. They mostly need a gun and handcuffs, but use other things, too. Because people don t know how to use these types of gear, officers go to extra training to learn. Police officers need a two way radio to communicate to other officers. A Taser is used to zap criminals, which stops them from getting away. They need a flashlight to see in the dark. Computers give them lots of information. They show maps of areas, fingerprints of suspects, and license plate numbers. A badge is used to show that you can trust the officer. They wear bullet proof vests so that criminals can t hurt them with guns. They use pepper spray to spray criminals eyes. This stings their eyes so the officer can catch them. Ouch! 5 A diagram of a police car Transportation Police officers around the world use many types of transportation. This is so they can watch land, water, and even the sky! These tools are very helpful while being a police officer. Most Police officers use cars and motorcycles. Some ride in helicopters to watch the sky and the ground from up high. Others walk on foot and ride bicycles in big cities. This helps them so they don t get stuck in traffic. A long time ago, police officers rode horses. They are called mounted police. In some places they still do! This helps them travel faster in cities where it is too crowed. It also helps them see up above the crowds. NYC still has a mounted police unit! A ram police car. Police officers can fly on hover crafts!

6 Crime Prevention and Arrests Some police officers help with crime prevention. That s why they patrol areas to look for criminals. A criminal wouldn t want to do something bad when they see a police officer near. They would not want to go to jail. If there is a crime, police try to find and arrest the suspect. Detectives find clues from the scene, like finger prints and foot prints. If they catch the criminal, they put them in jail. Depending on what they did, a judge decides how long they will be to jail. 7 K-9 Dogs A K-9 dog is a specially trained dog that helps law enforcement officers. They are usually German Shepherds or other dogs (no cats). They have to go through training. This involves obstacles and finding things that the trainer hides. They have a really good sense of smell that humans don t have. This helps them do their job. They smell drugs and find missing or hiding people. Also, they are very fast so that they can catch criminals faster than humans. They are sprinters. That means they can run really fast, but only for a short distance. They can t run long distances. 8 Public Safety on Roads Accidents can happen anywhere or anytime. Police officers are there to help. They have police cars to get there fast. Other cars stop and wait for them because the lights and sirens are going off. People sometimes speed really fast and that could cause an accident. Speeding is against the law. That s why police officers give speeding tickets. People learn not to speed again because they don t like paying the money. When there is construction on the roads, police officers direct traffic.
