1 Metro Economic Outlook: Miami The Miami region is still feeling some lingering effects from the Great Recession, but job growth has improved and tourism continues to inject life into the local economy. Things have been getting better, there has been steady improvement, said Robert Cruz, chairman of the Miami-Dade College School of Business. It has all been in the private sector, though. The public sector continues to decline, and it hasn t hit bottom yet, unfortunately. A downturn in property values during the recession has reduced tax collections and resulted in government layoffs, mostly at the local and county level, Cruz said. Even though the tax base is coming back with more homes sold, it is not producing as much revenue, Cruz said. The efficiency of tax collection has been diminished. Fortunately for the region which spans three counties in southeastern Florida labor force participation rates have remained steady. Sustained population growth among those aged 24 to 44 has supplanted the region s older workers that have left the work force in recent years. The Miami region s private sector now has 25,000 more jobs than it had at its pre-recession peak, Cruz said. Much of that growth has come in the professional and business services, manufacturing and construction industries. Unemployment and most CPI data updated monthly. 2 With no local or state income taxes in the Miami region, and no local corporate tax, the low cost of doing business makes the region attractive for start-up companies. The port also processes more than eight million tons of cargo each year, and the various shipping lines that travel along Miami s shores conduct commerce in more than 100 countries around the world. International trade and cruise industry activity combined conducted at the port supports about 207,000 jobs and represents $27 billion in economic activity annually, according to Miami-Dade County. 2
