Training and Residency: Family Practice MDs Today s guest presenters will discuss the medical school pipeline for family practice MDs who want to do OB, including: recruitment and admission medical school training specialty choices in residency opportunities for rural experience in OB 9
Training and Residency: Family Practice MDs University of Minnesota Twin Cities 1 st and 2 nd year there is no training in OB. 3 rd and 4 th year offer rural and international electives with OB components. About 30% of family practice graduates move into practices that do OB in rural or urban settings. Roughly 70% stay in MN. Rural settings pay well for family practice physicians willing to provide OB services. 10
Training and Residency: Family Practice MDs University of Minnesota Duluth 1 st year students are offered an elective OB Longitudinal Course (about 16 students/year) The course matches each student with a family physician and an OB patient. The students follow the OB patients during their prenatal care, labor and delivery, and post- partum care. All 2 nd year students complete an OB rotation in Critical Care Medicine. Students also see OB patients through the Rural Family Medicine, Native American, and Minority Medical Scholars Program (RMSP). 11
Training and Residency: General Surgeon MDs Minnesota has 3 general surgery training programs: Mayo Clinic College of Medicine (11 slots) Hennepin County Medical Center (7 slots) University of Minnesota (6 slots) No programs offer experience in a rural setting or exposure to rural general surgery practices. 1/3 rd of Minnesota s rural general surgeons complete medical school in Minnesota. Slightly more than 1/3 rd of Minnesota s rural general surgeons complete residency training in Minnesota. 12
Training and Residency: Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) There is 1 CNM program in Minnesota University of Minnesota There is 1 CNM program in neighbor states Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI Several distance programs are available Frontier Nursing University (CNM) University of Cincinnati (CNM) Georgetown (CNM/WHNP dual program) 13
Training and Residency: Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) University of Minnesota CNM program 8-10 graduates per year Approximately 90% practice in Minnesota following graduation Number of deliveries required for graduation = 50 High-risk pregnancy training is included. First c-section assist occurs post graduation. Students have the option to train in rural settings. There have been 19 new CNM certifications recorded at the MN Board of Nursing since January This does NOT necessarily reflect new grads. 14
