COSA SEASIDE JUNE 20TH, 2012 Brain Based Treatment Programs for Severely Disturbed Adolescents in Bend La-Pine Schools
COSA SEASIDE JUNE 20TH, 2012 A Picture of Tamarack Presented by: Jake Slodki BS, MATC Todd Brown BA, MS Julie Reinhart LMFT, NCAC1 Supported By: Erich Brocker MS, NCSP Patti Craveiro-Director of Special Programs BLPSD Jim Mills-Assistant Director of Special Programs BLPSD
Tamarack Works with the most severely emotionally and behaviorally impacted students in the Bend-LaPine School District. Tamarack consists of Riverbend middle school program and Chamberlain high school program.
Introduction Conventional Wisdom says, those behavior kids are stubborn defiant rude obstinate lazy, chooses to defy authority Collaborative Problem Solving says: Kids Will Do Well If They Can Tamarack provides a community based learning environment for students.
What does it look like every day Daily Mindful Reflection Collaborative Problem Solving Members of a Community Character Based Literacy Academic Based Program Emotional Awareness Personal Hygiene Physical Health Personal Goals Nutrition
Three components Collaborative Problem Solving and IEP Goals Working with students that have experienced traumatic life events Integrative learning opportunities
Collaborative Problem Solving CPS provides a framework for working with children with a wide range of social, emotional and behavioral challenges.(thinkkids.org) The challenges that students face are a by-product of lagging skills. Student challenges are best addressed by teaching the students the skills they lack, not via reward and punishment programs or intensive adult will. Kids do well if they can
The Thinking Mind The Five Domains of the Thinking Mind: Executive Skills Cognitive Flexibility Skills Social Skills Language Processing Skills Emotional Regulation Skills Students need opportunities to practice social emotional regulation
Tamarack Implementation of CPS Using clear expectations of health, safety and education. Help students improve and shift thinking skills. Facilitates students exploring concerns to develop durable solutions.
The Thinking Mind Thinking Domains Executive Functions Cognitive Flexibility Social Skills Emotional Regulation Language Processing Skills that are taught Empathy Identify, Clarify, Express concerns Separating affect Defining problems Recognizing impact on others Generating solutions Anticipating likely outcomes Reflective Flexible thinking Communication
Case Example Lagging Skill: A student has difficulty entering group conversations. Plan A: sit down, be quiet Plan B: I notice that when you join a group others get up and leave. Tell me about what you think is going on? Students are asked to think, problem solve... Plan C: Deal with the situation later if the student is not ready to have a conversation.
Using the information from CPS to support IEP goals 1. Use the Student Inventory to identify the most severe lagging skill or skills. 2. Work on identified lagging skill and monitor progress. 3. Use collected behavior data to write the IEP goal.

Dr. Stuart Ablon and Affirmations Eric Kola After ongoing consultation with CPS staff, and several observations, both Eric and Dr. Ablon have expressed that the Tamarack program is on the cutting edge of comprehensive CPS implementation.
Kids with Trauma Research shows that childhood trauma has profound impacts on emotional, behavioral, cognitive, social, and physical functioning of kids. (Perry et al) The brain becomes hard wired for fight, flight or freeze. The brain can re-learn in a correct environment. This image is an example of an environment that is suitable to help students with trauma.
A Therapeutic Environment The staff at Tamarack use the concept of mindfulness to help students brains become retrained. This is done individually and within community.
A sampling of mindful activities Movement in the form of mind/body and yoga. Mindful activities: brain gym, art, music, origami, sand trays, fly tying, writing, gardening, outdoor education experiences, service learning projects
Integrative Learning Experiences Students are asked to engage in classroom environments that often do not resemble their past experiences. Academic Classes, Service Learning, Outdoor Education
Academic Classes For the first time students experience what academic success feels like -Sherry Brooke The focus is on core academics, as well as electives that help the therapeutic process.
Character Based Literature: Character Traits Responsibility Requires Action Change Requires Effort Justice Requires Restraint Courage Requires Moderation Integrity Requires Wholeness
Character Based Literacy Uses Character traits to provide a structure that teaches literacy. Uses relevant issues embedded in novels to connect/relate to student s lives CBL is aligned to all Reading Language Arts Standards -Reading, Speaking, Listening, Writing
Service Learning The objectives is to help students gain a sense of place in their community. *To become a Thriving Citizen. Provide opportunities for students to practice their social, emotional and behavioral skills. Allow students to gain work experience. Red Cross Ronald Mc Donald Bend Park and Recreation *Bend La Pine School District Mission Statement
Service Learning Awards American Red Cross T.E.A.M. Award - For consistent hard work every time. Network of Volunteer Administrators - Volunteer of the Year Award - The Ronald McDonald house nominated our group based on the last four years of service.
Outdoor Education Expeditionary Theory shows that the outdoors is a powerful teacher for students with emotional and behavioral challenges. Tamarack provides opportunities for students to try out new behaviors in a safe/challenging environment.
Expeditionary Theory Comfort Zone Risk Zone Danger Zone Students are asked to stretch their comfort zones. Asked to understand and experience healthy risks. Students face and overcoming adversity in a container that allows them to benefit and grow from the experience.
