3 What the PTC Education Program is The PTC Global Education Program began in 1999 to help secondary school teachers and college professors bridge the growing gap between what s being taught in schools and what is needed throughout industry. Currently, there are two major trends in the global engineering marketplace that must be addressed by industry and education. In some countries, like the United States, Germany and England, fewer and fewer students are graduating each year with engineering degrees. In other countries, plenty of engineers are graduating each year, yet they lack the practical, real-world experience to make an immediate contribution upon graduation. The outcome of these trends is that companies are having more and more difficulty recruiting from an increasingly smaller pool of qualified engineers. 4 DesignQuest Schools Program PTC DesignQuest Schools Program The #1 Program for Teacher Students on All Levels At PTC, we realize that schools have limited budgets, and that teachers are pressed for time. That s why we developed our DesignQuest Schools Program, which provides donated or low-cost software, plus a complete learning program that makes it easy to bring 3D design into your classroom. To ensure that our programs are aligned with national standards, PTC worked with both teachers and institutions, such as the International Technology Education Association (ITEA) and the Design & Technology Association, to ensure that our programs meet global standards for curriculum, along with the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Initiative. With their insight, we created Design In-Context project-based activities and modular courses that are fl exible and will work with any teacher s classroom schedule. Melding CAD with Collaboration and Calculations In today s international marketplace, it is paramount that future engineers understand how to communicate, collaborate and design as a team in a global engineering environment. That s why we ve melded our design-based curriculum (Pro/ENGINEER), with Global Engineering (Windchill) and Engineering Calculations (Mathcad) to achieve an unprecedented design/collaboration/calculations experience. DesignQuest for Schools Pro/ENGINEER Schools Edition No-Cost Software The Schools Edition was developed specifically for secondary education, both to introduce students to design technology and to help them become better problem-solvers, critical thinkers and collaborators. With our investment of software and training, we provide a no-cost way for teachers to bring 3D design into the classroom. After teachers complete a training workshop, we donate up to 300 seats of Pro/ENGINEER Schools Edition 3D design software that students can use both in the classroom and at home. We also provide additional teacher training opportunities, classroom materials and discussion groups, as well as webbased resources for design collaboration between schools. The program includes:

6 PTC DesignQuest Schools Program Curriculum PTC is continually working with teachers and institutions such as the International Technology Education Association (ITEA), the Design & Technology Association, and other international education organizations to enhance and update our complete curriculum for our schools program. By working closely with these groups, we are able to directly align our tutorials to national and global standards for curriculum and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects. Also, to accommodate teachers busy schedules, PTC created a number of Design In-Context project-based activities and modular courses that make it fast and easy to build your curriculum. We ensure that each tutorial is fl exible, and can work with any teacher s classroom schedule. We realize that providing you with software is important, but to be fully successful, you need the whole teaching package, which is why our program includes software, curriculum, assessments and certification. Assessments: Evaluating Student Performance PTC has created student assessments based on the five elements listed below: Awareness. Essay questions: asking students to describe where parametric modeling is used and to give examples. Knowledge. Multiple-choice exams: asking students to recognize a correct answer among a set of options Understanding. Feature interrogation: asking students to open a part in Pro/ENGINEER and to find the sequence and type of features that were used to create the part. Capability. Modeling: asking students to model physical examples of parts/assemblies. Soft Skills. Team design/make/evaluate: requiring students to work with others on a team project. Certification PTC offers a product-based certification program for all students in our education programs. This online examination will test and rank proficiency for Pro/ENGINEER. Based on their results, each student will receive a formal certificate from the PTC Education Program, which is also endorsed by the PTC/MIT Consortium. 7 PTC Global Engineering Global Engineering Initiative PTC Driving the Future of Engineering Education The days of professional engineering design teams standing shoulderto-shoulder in conference rooms, working on 3D designs in isolation, are officially over. Likewise, the days of student engineers designing by themselves in isolated classrooms are also past history. Product development is now a global endeavor, involving dozens of product stakeholders working from every corner of the planet. 9 How to Get Involved DesignQuest SCHOOLS PROGRAM Pro/ENGINEER Schools Edition PTC will donate 300 seats of Pro/ENGINEER Schools Edition software and also provide additional teacher training opportunities, classroom materials, discussion groups, and web-based resources for design collaboration between schools. All that is required is that teachers attend a training workshop to become certifi ed on the software. Teacher Certification Initial Workshop In order to become certified, teachers must attend a Pro/ENGINEER Schools Edition workshop offered through our network of certified teacher instructors. Workshops are usually scheduled over a two-day period. During or after the training, teachers will need to complete a design project that demonstrates knowledge of the skills and processes taught in the workshop. The design project is an applied summative assessment used to verify capacity to teach Pro/ENGINEER Schools Edition in the classroom. Upon the successful completion of the workshop and submission of the Schools Edition License Agreement, each teacher will receive a signed certificate and completion letter. Once teachers are certified by PTC, they may install the software on up to 300 computers, including students home computers. The PTC-certified instructors who teach the classes are fellow technology educators who have incorporated Pro/ENGINEER Schools Edition into their teaching. These instructors are supported by PTC, but operate independently and schedule training courses individually. A list of upcoming training workshop classes is posted on our website at Instructor Certification PTC-certified instructors have completed two levels of certification: 1. Initial Workshop (described above) 2. Instructor Workshop The Instructor Workshop training provides advanced knowledge for Pro/ENGINEER Schools Edition administration, as well as how to run a successful Pro/ENGINEER Schools Edition training workshop. Pro/ENGINEER Schools Advanced Edition For a nominal fee, PTC will not only provide everything offered in the Schools Edition, but further enhance the functional capabilities by offering CAD/CAM/CAE functionality, customer support, and teacher training opportunities.
