2 From the President Dear Colleagues and Friends: The Alabama State University Fact Book, is an annual publication of the Institutional Research Office. This document is an update of factual information which is designed to assist administrators, faculty, staff and other university constituents with statistical references about the institution. It contains information about our degrees conferred, facilities, fiscal data, and faculty and student characteristics. The Office of Institutional Research, in its ongoing effort to provide useful information, will continue to refine this document each year and welcomes your comments and suggestions for inclusion of new information or improvements. This fact book edition will be the first edition to be placed on the ASU website ( in its entirety. 4 PREFACE The Office of Institutional Research (OIR) at Alabama State University publishes the university Fact Book annually during the spring semester. This document serves as an official reference guide to pertinent information about the university s history, facilities, students, personnel, alumni and academic programs. This document continues to present information that highlights the patterns or trends that exist in the data. This fact book also provides a historical context in which to review the university s development and can be used as a reference among the University s administrators and faculty in planning and decision-making. 5 OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH ALABAMA STATE UNIVERSITY Alabama State University (ASU) began in 1867 as Lincoln Normal School, a private school for Negroes located in Marion, Alabama. In 1878, William Burns Paterson was named President. President Paterson is revered as founder of Alabama State University. Today, ASU has nine major units: University College, College of Arts and Sciences, college of Health Sciences, College of Business Administration, college of Education, the School of Music, the School of Graduate Studies, Continuing Education and the Division of Aerospace Studies. The academic offerings range from the baccalaureate to the education specialist degree. The physical plant is approximately acres and is valued at more than $150 million. The faculty has grown from three to over 300. The university has conferred some 100 associate degrees, 28,241 baccalaureate degrees and 8,479 graduate degrees through spring Since Alabama State University s founding, more than 43,095 persons have earned degrees (includes high school diplomas and certificates from the university. 8 ALABAMA STATE UNIVERSITY MISSION Alabama State University is a regional comprehensive, historically black, state-supported university. In carrying out its mission, the university serves the city of Montgomery, the state, the nation and the global community. Its major commitments are quality programs of undergraduate and graduate instruction, residential life, continuing education, public service, and research provided at the most reasonable cost to individual students and taxpayers. The university will continue to strengthen its academic programs in education, business and the liberal arts while giving even greater emphasis to the science programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The science emphasis is in recognition of the gross under presentation of minority professionals in this broad and important field throughout the nation. The university will also expand further its public service programs through strengthening programs of service of local and state political leaders and providing them with research-based guidance on policy and program approaches and initiatives for addressing community problems. The university aims to develop and pursue these programs in a manner to ensure that eligible students who desire to develop and expand their scholastic skills for personal, occupational, or professional growth have the opportunity to do so, regardless of social economic status. Respect for the intellectual potential and dignity of students as individual human beings, without regard to age, sex, race, color cultural background, national origin, or disability, shall be paramount. 2
9 ACCREDITATIONS AND AFFILIATIONS Alabama State University (ASU) is accredited by the Commissions on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor s, master s and education specialist degrees. The university is also accredited by the following organizations and associations: The Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC), the Council on Social Work Education, the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) for the Health Information Management Program. ASU is approved by the Alabama State Department of Education and its programs and credits are accepted for teacher certification. ASU is approved by the Veterans Administration to provide educational programs authorized by Congress under several federal acts and those authorized by the State of Alabama under the Alabama G.I. and Dependents Benefit Act. 10 ASU is on the approved list of the American Association of University Women. Women graduates with approved baccalaureate degrees are eligible for membership in that association. Alabama State University is authorized under federal law to enroll nonimmigrant alien students-act 101 (a) (15) (F); CFR The College of Business Administration is a member of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the National Agency for Collegiate Schools of Business, the Southern Business Administration Association and the National Business League. The college holds membership in the Alabama Association for Higher Education in Business and the Alabama Council of Deans of Schools of Business. The College of Health Sciences is a member of the Association of Schools of Allied Health (ASAH). The departments in the college (Health Information Management, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy) are members of the following national organizations: the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the American Hospital Association (AHA); the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA); the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA); the National Society of Allied Health (NSAH); and the American Academy of Physical Therapy (AAPT). Authorized location of more than 20 chapters of national honor and professional societies on the campus further attest to the high standing of the university and recognition of the quality of its academic programs and offerings. 4
