4 The evolution of 2D, 2D interactive, 3D interactive Illustrations have played a major role in the technical information industry since day 1. Their importance or focus can vary form one standard to another. 5 Value of Conventional, Fully Detailed, 2D Drawing Pros Human Readable Standard Format Provides All Information Cons Time Consuming to Create Duplicated Work Change control Error Prone created dimensions Not easily viewed Full Size on computer Screen or reduce to 8½ by 11 paper for enterprise People still have to visualize 3D model in minds eye (usually only one isometric view) The better and faster that people can understand technical information The quicker, more accurate, and less expensive their response will be 5

6 Pros/Cons of 3D Why do it? Pros Aids comprehension Versatile Provides All Information in one package Allows for bundling of Figures/Views in a single object Can be re purposed for training Direct tie back to source CAD information/bom data Cons Require special tools/skills to create Not good for print Require plug ins to run in web browser File size 6

7 Why not do both? For illustrations that have CAD source there are tools and processes to generate both the 2D Isometric and the 3D interactive illustration from the same source file. 8 ASD/AIA/ATA Standards Support S1000D enables the integration of 3D illustrations via the multimedia object model in the XML schema This provides authors a way of referencing lightweight versions of CAD models for use in service procedures and training courses Including these object types in this way is vendor/software neutral and 100% specification compliant. 8
