5 Virtualization Overview What is virtualization? Virtualization is the separation of the Operating System from the hardware It places a thin software layer called the Hypervisor between the Operating System and the hardware This hypervisor presents a complete x86 platform to one or more operating systems these are called Virtual Machines A virtual machine (VM) is a software implementation of a computer that executes programs like a real computer Multiple VMs can be hosted on a single computer VMs can be readily moved between different makes and models of computers Today Future VM VM VM VM Portable VM App App App App App Non-VM OS OS OS OS OS Applications Operating System Virtualization Layer ( Hypervisor) Virtualization Layer ( Hypervisor) 5

6 Virtualization System Benefits Efficiencies Reduced deployment and upgrade costs o Deliver pre-built virtual machines o Better standardization & deploy new machines in minutes rather then hours Reduce impact and frequency of OS and hardware changes o Upgrade cycles no longer driven by hardware obsolescence o Impact when a hardware change is required is reduced o Avoid having to test OS/Application stack against physical hardware Hardware consolidation 6 to 1 hardware device consolidation on L3 o Run multiple OS and application stacks on one physical machine o For each PC removed there is a reduction in power, maintenance, space and cooling Reliability Improved and simplified fault recovery (standby VMs, snapshots) 6

7 Case for Action Current installed DCS hardware and software are due for upgrade Current hardware was put in place during initial deployment 2007/2008. Current release is using Windows 2003/XP Hardware refresh & DCS release upgrade required Two options: 1. Conventional hardware refresh and DCS release upgrade to latest version 2. Virtualization and DCS release upgrade to latest version 7

8 Business Case for Virtualization Virtualization versus Conventional Hardware refresh; Advantages Virtualization Reduced deployment and Upgrade cost Reduce impact and frequency of OS and hardware changes No Tight coupling between OS and Application and Hardware Hardware reduction (30 servers to 12) Improved availability (reduced downtime by hot stand by) In a virtualized environment easy to make snapshots resulting in faster recovery. Virtual technology is the path Vendor will further develop, roll out and support Dis-Advantages Virtualization New technology for Level 2 Process Control We will be one of the first ExxonMobil sites to go virtual for level 2. If a host machine fails more VM s will be unavailable at the same time, but recovery will be much faster Recommended path forward is Virtualization; Improvement in availability by faster problem recovery Savings actual by next hardware refresh cycle. 8

10 Phased Approach 1. Implemented Virtualization on Development and Simulator Systems in Used 2 nd development system cluster to test physical-to-virtual during OPM upgrade 3. 1 st production cluster done November 2012 OPM combined with physical-to-virtual hardware refresh First OPM for this site with dual-primary operation OPM preparations similar to other OPM s OPM SR with Vendor ERDB checkers Software Change Notice preparations 4. Last cluster will be Offsites cluster running Blending Application on top of DCS. Additional preparations required. 10
