MOORE, PhD, P R E S I D E N T I C U F N e w s l e t t e r A p r i l (850) emoore@icuf.org NSU Gains 6th President George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D., a professor and civic leader, was officially installed as Nova Southeastern University s 6 th President this month. Hanbury, who formerly served as NSU s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, was officially installed by NSU s Board of Trustees. I am honored and humbled by the position and responsibility NSU s Board of Trustees has entrusted me with to lead this great university, Hanbury said. Hanbury was elected by the board of trustees to be NSU s 6th President and COO in January 2010, and on July 1, 2011, his title will officially change to President and Chief Executive Officer. George Hanbury has been a proven leader at NSU for more than a decade, said Ray Ferrero Jr., J.D., who served as NSU s 5th president from 1998 to I am confident he will help NSU continue its successes in providing high quality education, conducting groundbreaking research, and serving as vital partner with the community. George L. Hanbury II AMU CEO Assumes Role Early Ave Maria University's planned handover of its CEO responsibilities from founder Tom Monaghan to Jim Towey came sooner than originally planned. Jim Towey had been designated by the board to assume the CEO position July 1, but the school's board of trustees asked him to assume the role immediately, board chairman Michael Timmis said in an to the university community. The action was taken at Mr. Monaghan's request, Mr. Timmis said, to "help facilitate the transition and specifically the budget decisionmaking process for the academic year." Mr. Towey (L) and Mr. Monaghan

2 JU s MSRI Earns Gold-level LEED Certification Jacksonville University s Marine Science Research Institute (MSRI) proudly announces that it has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification status. We designed the MSRI to be energy efficient and sustainable. Words cannot express my deep appreciation to all the many people who contributed to making this dream real. It was the right time and the right place for this to happen, said Dr. Quinton White, executive director of the MSRI. The synergy of the facility is fantastic and we are already seeing collaborations taking place that in the past we could only imagine. We celebrate the official honor with our partner in conservation, JEA, who helped us in so many ways in the design and sustainable concept. We hope that people will see ideas in the MSRI that they can use in their own homes and businesses. Dr. Quinton White UT Names Dean of Students Stephanie Russell Holz, currently associate dean of students and director of the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement at The University of Tampa, has been named UT s new dean of students. As dean of students, Holz will provide vision, leadership and strategic direction for the student affairs division, and will design, support and assess key facets of the student experience. Holz will begin her new position at UT on June 1. Holz s demonstrated abilities to envision outcomes and mobilize resources to that end, as well as her engaging and affirming disposition, make her the right choice for UT, said Linda Devine, UT vice president of operations and planning. She has created change in an intentional fashion, identifying student needs and galvanizing what is needed for the betterment of our community. Stephanie Russell Holz FMU Celebrates Black History Month Florida Memorial University commemorated Black History Month this February, by celebrating their culture, history and legacy. As is tradition, the Black History Month Committee offered Florida Memorial students and the community at large an opportunity to enjoy film screenings, workshops, panel discussions, stage readings, concerts, and spiritual worship services. Activities were plentiful during the month-long celebration. Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements of notable African- Americans, said Keshia Abraham, Ph.D., chairperson of the University s Black History Month Committee. It s a time to reflect on our rich history, strong legacy, and consistent talent. It is through our Black History Month celebrations that we encourage renewed awareness, understanding, and admiration for our great University. 2

3 Embry-Riddle Program Helps Chinese The commencement certificates awarded to 26 Chinese aviation officials at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University are emblems of a growing multi-year relationship between Embry-Riddle and the Civil Aviation Administration of China, which represents an industry that has already graduated to the world s center stage. Embry-Riddle began the training program four years ago, offering courses in air traffic management, airline and airport management, aviation environmental issues, development of airport capacity, and security to groups of top- and mid-level administrators from China s governmental agencies and aviation businesses. We feel a special kinship with our Chinese friends, said Tim Brady, dean of the College of Aviation. The professional short-course programs we offer give us the opportunity to learn as much from them as they do from us. The College of Business is honored to be a part of this developing relationship with China, said Daniel Petree, dean of the college. We are delighted to join with our colleagues representing such an important economic powerhouse to share best practices in an open and mutually beneficial format. Administrators from China s governmental agencies and aviation businesses have been training at Embry-Riddle since The most recent group of graduates, seen here with Embry-Riddle faculty and staff, learned about current practices in managing aviation routes and schedules. Eckerd Finalist for 'Next Generation Learning' Grant Eckerd College was named as a finalist for the first round of grants in the Next Generation Learning Challenge. The program plans to disburse $20 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to educational technology projects over the next two years. The project, In-class Polling for All Learners, led by William F. Junkin, will allow students to use a mixture of clickers and web-enabled devices to respond to in-class polling through a Moodle module. Research shows that the greater student involvement obtained through polling increases student learning and provides immediate feed-back to instructors, allowing for better response to student needs. An analysis of the response data will help identify patterns that may indicate a student is in danger of dropping the class or quitting school. This will provide an opportunity for early William Junkin intervention to increase course completion and retention rates. 3

4 Moore Named to CHS Board Dr. Ed H. Moore, President of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (ICUF), was selected to join Children s Home Society of Florida s (CHS) board of directors. CHS is a statewide organization that offers critical services for more than 100,000 children and family members throughout the state. I am honored to serve on the board of CHS. The compassion and guidance this organization provides to countless children throughout the Sunshine State has changed many lives, said Dr. Moore. CHS programs not only enhance the quality of life for our state s youngest, but they work to ensure teenagers in foster care are prepared to be independent adults through life skills training and Dr. Ed H. Moore access to higher education opportunities. We are thrilled to have Dr. Moore join our Board of Directors. Dr. Moore brings years of experience in both the private sector and government and will help CHS implement its strategic vision for breaking generational cycles of child abuse and neglect, said David Bundy, President and CEO of CHS. Portuguese Girl Ringling Faculty Wins Top Prize Ringling College of Art and Design faculty member, Hodges Soileau, recently earned a 1st Place in the Women category of the Portrait Society of America's Member Showcase Competition. His work "Teen Blues" garnered the top prize and he was also recognized with an honorable mention for "Portuguese Girl" in the Head and Shoulders category. Teen Blues FC Pursues Communication Degree In a recent poll, freshmen and sophomores were asked whether or not they would be interested in pursuing a degree in communication at Florida College. The reaction was clear and overwhelming, with one in four students expressing interest in the degree program. As a result, Florida College announced that its sixth bachelor s degree program is progressing through the approval process with hopes of a launch date in fall 2011.The approval process involves course development, a series of internal approvals by the board, faculty and administration, as well as a final approval by our accrediting agency the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges. The accreditation process has been successful for the five bachelor s programs currently offered at Florida College, and the faculty anticipates that this process will be equally smooth. 4

5 New Academic Programs at Clearwater Christian College Clearwater Christian College announces the addition of the Military Science and Criminal Justice minors to the academic curriculum effective with the school year. For over ten years, students from Clearwater Christian have been able to participate in Air Force, Army, and Navy ROTC through a crosstown agreement with the University of South Florida and each military branch. This new minor will allow the hard work of ROTC cadets to be incorporated into an academic minor. The Criminal Justice minor is completely unique to Clearwater Christian. Vice President for academic affairs Mary Draper said, The new minor in military science will allow the hard work of our ROTC cadets to be incorporated into an academic minor. We added the no-credit seminar and the one Bible minor course to add a CCC footprint to the minor. I trust this minor will be an encouragement to our ROTC students. Additionally, the new minor in criminal justice will begin in the fall with three courses being offered allowing students interested in criminal justice to take all six courses in two semesters. Our plan is to build on this minor in the future. Warner Men's Tennis Awarded Team Sportsmanship Award Warner University Men s Tennis Team has been awarded The ITA National Team Sportsmanship Award for the month of March by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The ITA National Team Sportsmanship Award is a monthly award that goes to one men's and one women's team that has exemplified outstanding sportsmanship, character and ethical conduct in the true spirit of competition and collegiate tennis. As the coach I've made my entire team focus on respect, responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. We have made strides this year to set ourselves apart from other programs. We look to conduct ourselves in the most professional manner while on the court, said head coach Jose Martinez. "Our team understands how important and how much I value good sportsmanship. We talk about it in meetings, at practice, and before and after matches." 5

6 BC-U Receives Message of Self-Worth Civil rights leader Reverend Al Sharpton, told students at Bethune-Cookman University s they must believe in themselves and not let their upbringing or others who try to bring them down define their future. "It doesn't matter who is against you if you are on your own side," Sharpton said. "Everybody God made, he made to be something. You can do it no matter what is in your way. Don't live your life letting others tell you your value." Sharpton spoke as part of the first National Summit of the Black Males in Higher Education Think Tank. The session was the Reverend Al Sharpton first of many intended to open dialogue between students and prominent male adults in order to help black males become productive citizens and continue their education. While speaking, Sharpton said his main concern is for young people to have "self-worth and determination." Gift Launches Flagler Restoration Campaign Flagler College President William T. Abare, Jr., announced that the college has received a $500,000 challenge gift from Allen and Delores Lastinger toward the rehabilitation of Ponce de Leon Hall's fourth floor Solarium. "We are tremendously pleased to have received this extremely important gift from the Lastinger Family Foundation to help us complete the restoration and full use of Ponce de Leon Hall," said Abare. "We appreciate the Lastinger's generosity and their strong support for our projects and programs." "Our family has identified historic preservation as a focus for our philanthropy," said Delores Lastinger. "As a trustee of Flagler College and with Allen's interest in Florida and St. Augustine history, it was a perfect fit for us to start a fund to restore the solarium. It has been, and will once again become, one of the many jewels of the original Hotel Ponce de Leon." Fourth Floor Solarium photo credit - Kelsey Schirard STU to Hold First Regional Science Fair Addressing the need for U.S. future scientists and recognizing student scientific leadership, St. Thomas University s School of Science, Technology and Engineering Management held its first Regional Science Fair, inviting high school students from public, private and Catholic schools to participate, have their projects judged, and be eligible to win tech prizes in high demand. The corporate community was also involved as well as high school teachers who have significantly promoted student participation and interest in science. A daylong agenda of informative and stimulating scientific activities for students was planned. One important aspect is the fact that there are no fees associated with the participation of science projects at the fair. As early as January 2011, the School partnered with Miami Dade Public School System District One and The Miami Herald, calling on high school students with outstanding science and math talent to enroll in its first Competition. The all-day event featured a panel of distinguished businessmen, faculty and other science fellows serving as judges. Student prizes include an ipad, laptops and other gifts that will empower their studies. 6

Led by the Worship Director Seth Ready and his wife, Nirva, both accomplished Christian recording artists, the singers and instrumentalists have plans to perform 90 minutes in each of four Assembly of God churches in Maryland and one New York church that s led by Pastor Donnie McClurkin, a threetime Grammy Award-winning gospel singer. In one of the Maryland churches, the Singers will also judge a vocal competition among teenagers from Assemblies of God churches throughout that state.
