3 INTRODUCTION The University of Toronto boasts 44 libraries and a combined collection of more than 20 million items. The University of Toronto is also the home of Robarts Library the second largest library in North America and the largest library in Canada. With such a vast amount of information available to students it is easy to be intimidated, lost in the search for library resources and shy away from accessing the different spaces available. This guide is not intended to have every piece of information regarding a library and its services. However, it is meant to be a starting point to introduce you to the different libraries that exist and the basic services each provides. Robarts Library and Gerstein Library are by far the most known spaces for study, but each library has a different element that can enhance your study and research abilities. This guide is intended for undergraduate students and only touches the surface of UofT s research institutions. In addition to the information listed in this guide, we encourage you to visit library websites for specific borrowing policies and schedules, research support, the availability of new and exciting workshops and the featured collections. This guide is the first in a series that the University of Toronto Students Union wishes to produce this year. We have heard feedback from students that it is often difficult to navigate the numerous amount of services offered at an institution as large as the University of Toronto. It is our hope that the guides we are able to produce this year will make navigating the services at the University of Toronto easier for students. We would love to hear your feedback on this guide. 4 GUIDELINES 1. ADDRESS BUILDING FLOOR OR ROOM: Some libraries will share the same address as another library. For instance, Robarts Library hosts numerous other libraries within its space. Other libraries may sometimes be located within a building that fulfills other purposes, such as the Law Library that also has facilities for classes. 2. PHONE This is a generic phone and contact. For larger libraries, check online for the multitude of librarian and staff resources that range from specific programs to IT help. 3. WEBSITE: Some websites utilize a generic utoronto.ca library website format while other libraries may link to a faculty, college or independent page. Websites also indicate any modifications in operating hours 4. HOURS OF OPERATION: The hours of operation indicate when the library is open. These hours do not account for statutory holidays, the winter break and summer hours. Check online for up-to-date and extended library hours for exam seasons. Some services may not be offered during operation hours since they may require professional librarian or technical support. 5. COLLECTION: Collections indicate the size, specialization and types of collections available. Visit individual library s websites for listings of featured collections. Most libraries have catalogued their collections onto the central library database. 6. SERVICES:This provides a basic overview of services at a specific library. This is to indicate the extra pieces of information that might be appealing to students, such as the availability of computer workstations and group study spaces. 7. REFERENCE SERVICES: Reference Services indicate when professional librarians are available to aid in searching and retrieving documents 8. RESTRICTED MATERIALS: Some documents are by request only or are unable to borrow due to a fragileness or value of the item. The best example is the Rare book Library. 9. FOOD SERVICES: Some libraries have food services in or around the library. Most libraries do not have this provision.

5 GENERAL SERVICES USING CENTRAL LIBRARY SERVICES The University of Toronto has compiled the information of all its libraries into one central website to make the search for resources simpler. Find links to individual libraries, summaries of services, and a comprehensive search engine for catalogues, e-resources and different collections, T-CARD: Your student card is your primary identification for accessing library services. Additionally, for the majority of large libraries a T-Card is required for photocopying, printing and micro-text printing. The T-card office is located on the second floor of Robarts Library. Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri 9am-5pm Tues 9am-7pm BORROWING: Most libraries have similar borrowing policies. However, some libraries have different collections with different demands, which warrant different loan periods, availabilities, renewal policies and item limits. Check with the individual library on their lending policies. Generic loan privileges for undergraduate students: Loan Period: 14 days Renewals: 3 renewals, 14 days each Item Limit: 50 items EXAM REPOSITORIES: The central library system collects old exams for reference. Currently, the central repository carries the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, UTM and UTSC. Student faculty associations also typically have past exams for student access. RESEARCH CONSULTATION: Book an appointment with a librarian to discuss research strategies. Use the central library request system or contact individual libraries directly. 5

6 GENERAL SERVICES ASK A LIBRARIAN: Chat online with a librarian to help answer any of your questions. Mon-Thurs: 10am-10pm Fri: 10am-5pm Sat/Sun: 11am-5pm INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY HELP DESK: help.desk@utoronto.ca Located on the first floor of Robarts library, the help desk provides assistance with UTORid accounts, UofT services, the campus wireless network and general inquiries about computing services. Walk-in: Mon-Fri 9:30am-7pm; Sat 11am-2pm Telephone: Mon-Fri 8:30am-9pm; Sat 11am-3pm; Sun 1pm-5pm Similar help desks are available at UTM and UTSC libraries. REQUESTING ITEMS TO ANOTHER LOCATION: From one UofT campus to another (Inter Campus Delivery, or IDL): An item can be requested from another campus through the online catalogue. Delivery takes up to five days. From an institution unaffiliated with UofT (Interlibrary Loan, or ILL): Students, staff and faculty can request books, journal articles and other materials from worldwide institutions using the Interlibrary Loan Service (ILL). The library will inform those who request this service if there is an associated fee, although this service is typically free. Gerstein, OISE, Robarts, UTM and UTSC libraries offer ILL. WORKSHOPS: The central library website lists available workshops on research and library strategies and software. Workshops can be searched by library. Students can also visit individual library webpages to get updates on research methods for particular streams such as humanities or sciences.

This past year, the UTSU has been working with students, faculty and librarians to oppose the increase in copyright fees imposed by the University Administrations unilateral decision to increase the student fee to Access Copyright. The fee increased from $3.38 to $26.00 despite the lack of need to impose the fee. A coalition of partners continue to fight the copyright fee as more Universities across the country have decided to oppose the hike. 7

8 IMPROVING SERVICES As the population of undergraduate students at all three campuses continues to grow, so does the need for late night study space. The Students Union is actively involved in lobbying efforts to secure additional extended hours for multiple libraries during mid-term and exam periods. We are also lobbying to increase the regular hours of operation for the Mississauga Campus library. Want to get involved in improving our library services? Join the Academic and Student Rights Commission and FOOD ON CAMPUS: The University of Toronto Students Union knows how difficult it can be to balance cramming for a final and a mental/physical health. During mid-term season and exam periods, the UTSU visits libraries with expanded hours of operations to give out sandwiches, fruit, granola bars, coffee and tea to students hard at work. Find us at Robarts Library after midnight and visit gotyou for locations and times. RECOMMEND A TITLE: Is UofT missing a book? Suggest a title that you think should be added to the collection. Found an older publication in the stacks that is not published in the collection? Let the library know and they will add it.

Holders of most valid University of Toronto Library cards may borrow materials from the collection. The loan period is two nights with possibility of up to three renewals if no other reservation exists. Extended loan periods may be arranged if multiple classroom screenings are required. Services: The Media Commons provides a variety of audiovisual playback equipment for on-site use, namely VHS and DVD players, along with specialized equipment such as Laser Videodisc, 16mm film projectors, 35mm slide projectors and audiocassette players. Group screening rooms are available, including a 50-seat theatre and a 32-seat classroom styled facility. A videoconference room may also be reserved for University related endeavours. Sixteen individual audiovisual carrels are also available. Advanced reservations for screening rooms and specialized equipment such as 16mm film projectors are recommended. 32 You are paying EXTRA FEES $$$ for education that your tuition FEES ALREADY COVER! The University of Toronto signed an agreement with an organization called Access Copyright. The agreement claims that it will protect the university from being liable to infringement of the Copyright Act. But Access Copyright is charging an extra fee. The university has decided to sign up for this protection without any consultations with students, faculty or librarians of the university. As of May 2012, students are being forced to pay a $26 fee for Access Copyright. The weird thing is that we used to pay $3.38 for the same protection! To make matters worse, the Supreme Court has ruled that the use of copyrighted published materials by students would not infringe the Copyright Act. In other words, this protection is already granted to us, just by virtue of being students! There s no need for a fee! We need your help in telling the UofT Administration that we shouldn t have to pay for academic materials that should be covered under our tuition fees.
