3 Gateshead Joint Strategic Needs Assessment 2012 Data Annex Chapter 6 Cancer This Annex to the Gateshead Joint Strategic Needs Assessment brings together indicators of population, health, well-being, the wider determinants of health and usage of care and health services among the population of Gateshead. Trends are considered over time and the values for local populations are compared to figures for local neighbours, similar populations in other parts of England, the NE regional average and the England average. The data set has been put together jointly by NHS South of Tyne and Wear and Gateshead Council The Annex is divided into nine chapters: 1. Population 2. Social and Environmental Context 3. Child Health and Lifestyle 4. Life Expectancy, Mortality and Ill Health due to All Causes 5. Heart Disease, Stroke and Related Conditions 6. Cancer 7. Adult Health, Long Term Conditions other than Heart Disease and Cancer and Social Care 8. Adult Lifestyle 9. Public Voice Within this Chapter on Cancer, the information is grouped by type of cancer. Each subsection is structured to show, first, mortality, followed by survival rates, population incidence, and finally population prevalence where this is available. Wherever information is available at a geographical level below the Local Authority population as a whole, this is illustrated on maps of Gateshead showing electoral wards. Each ward has an average population of around 10,000 people. The maps of variations in health and lifestyle for small areas are constructed so that poor health or less healthy lifestyle behaviours are shown as darker colours. The data set is designed to support Local Authorities and Primary Care Trusts when undertaking Joint Strategic Needs Assessment in It will also be of use to a wide range of partner agencies in the public, third and commercial sectors and individuals who either provide or use local health and care services. The format of the data set has been informed by consultation with health and social care specialists across the North East region and this process was facilitated by the North East Public Health Observatory. It also acknowledges the content suggested by the Association of Public Health Observatories in its report The JSNA Core Dataset. If you have any queries about the data in this annex please contact: Public Health Analyst, NHS South of Tyne and Wear, Pemberton House, Colima Avenue, Sunderland SR5 3XB Tel: andy.billett@sotw.nhs.uk There are a number of websites now providing tools which monitor indicators of health and social care at Local Authority or ward level for all areas either within a region or across England. Within this chapter, much information has been taken from the National Cancer E-Atlas maintained by the National Cancer Intelligence Network. Where indicators are monitored by the Cancer E-Atlas, outputs are reproduced, but the user is directed to Atlas for further details. A link to the Cancer e-atlas is provided at the foot of the relevant sections for those who access this document from a PC with internet access.. 299

7 6. Cancer 6.1. Premature Mortality Due to all Cancers Our Healthier Nation target: To reduce deaths from all cancers among persons under 75 years of age by at least 20% by the year These graphs show the contribution from premature mortality due to all cancers towards reducing the gap in life expectancy between England and local populations. Around one quarter of this gap in Gateshead is due to excess mortality due to all cancers. There is also an Our Healthier Nation target in relation to overall reductions in mortality in this area. Gateshead and South Tyneside PCTs have already achieved the Our Healthier Nation target of a 20% reduction in the premature mortality rate due to all cancers between 1996 and Rates are three year pooled, shown in the middle year of the three year period. 303

20 6.5. Index of cancer survival at one year after diagnosis among people ages years In 2010, the Office of National Statistics published a set of indices which showed a measure of relative cancer survival at one year after diagnosis for PCT populations across England. The indices are expressed as percentage and represent a weighted average of the proportion of cancer patients who survive to one year across all cancers. The index has been designed for routine monitoring of the local effectiveness of cancer services. It is adjusted for differences between PCTs in the profile of their resident cancer patients by age, sex and type of cancer. It is also adjusted for variations in the profile of resident cancer patients within PCT populations over time. The indices have been calculated for each of the eleven years between 1996 and Each index has an accompanying precision factor. The measure of precision is the inverse of the variance of the relative survival index. A lower precision factor indicates that the index is based on fewer observations and so we have less confidence in the accuracy of the index. Funnel plots are shown below for three years, 1996, 2001 and The horizontal yellow line represents the England average. Indices for all English PCT populations are shown on the plots. The dotted lines on the funnel plots equate to 95% and 99% confidence limits If an index is below the England average i.e. a smaller percentage of cancer patients than the England average survive to one year, and lies outside the first or second dotted line, then the index is significantly lower than the England index at a 95% or 99% level of confidence. 33 6.9. Mortality by Type of Cancer There are around 600 deaths each year in Gateshead due to cancer. These represent 30% of all deaths, which is higher than the comparative figure of 28% for England as a whole. Similarly, deaths due to lung cancer represent a higher proportion of all deaths due to cancer in Gateshead when compared to England as a whole. In Gateshead 30% of all deaths due to cancer are caused by lung cancer compared to 22% across England.
