Substance Use: Impact on Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing Treatment Options
Methods: General Population 12-step harm reduction cognitive behavioral therapy motivational interviewing therapeutic community
What We Know: About half of those who start treatment leave early. Those who complete treatment decrease use. Relapse rates are high, especially without ongoing support. Multiple episodes of treatment may be required on the way to recovery.
Treatment: Mainstream Settings Many people who are deaf or hard of hearing can only access services designed for hearing people for some, it can work out with accommodations and others not..
Treatment: Mainstream Settings Few trained substance abuse counselors who are deaf or hearing and fluent in ASL. Interpreters are provided for only a portion of treatment time. Staff is not knowledgeable about deafness and cultural issues. No accessible materials to meet needs of individuals who are D/HH.
Rationale: Specialized Treatment Language is the primary delivery mode for treatment services. Language is based on cultural experience. Full access to treatment!
Specialized Treatment Include Deaf (or hearing) counselors fluent in American Sign Language. Staff knowledgeable about communication and culture. Adapted materials. Accessibility devices i.e. video phones, flashing lights, visual or vibrating alarms, captioning, etc.
A Model: Specialized Treatment Minnesota Chemical Dependency Program for Deaf & Hard of Hearing Individuals (MCDPDHHI) Opened 1989 serving 1289 D/HH Established standards of care for model programs Key to improving treatment conditions

Draw pictures of family consequences. Draw pictures of law consequences. Draw pictures of job/school consequences. Draw pictures of social consequences.
