So what is Radiologic Technology anyway??? GREAT QUESTION!!!!!!

Is the art and science of applying ionizing radiation to humans to create images of the body. This aids physicians in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Dana Schmitz, M.Ed., R.T.(R)

People Profession Pt. Contact Time

Math & Science Curriculum

Physics Biology A & P Chemistry Math, math, math!

We work with our equipment as much as we do with patients. Therefore, we must know as much as or more about it as we do about patients and their care. Radiation is a hazardous material!!

Mobile equipment used: At patients bedside In the emergency room In the operating room In the neonatal intensive care unit In pain clinic In the morgue

Elbow images obtained during surgical procedure to check hardware placement. Normal knee image

Routine chest x-ray, which students perform within the first six weeks of the program. This is the most abundant exam performed in most imaging departments.

Barium Enema- One fluoroscopy exam we perform with a radiologist in the room who is making active diagnosis during the exam. Contrast media (barium) is introduced into the large intestine through an enema tube which the students/techs insert into the rectum.

Upper GI exam- Also performed with a radiologist in the room making an active diagnosis. Contrast media (barium) is introduced into the stomach by the patient drinking the liquid barium.

Computed Tomography Magnetic Resonance Imaging Sonography Radiation Therapy Nuclear Medicine Mammography Cardiovascular Interventional Students are given exposure to each area and more!

Second modality offered in conjunction with a BS degree Contact them directly for more information

KCC accepts transfer credit from the first 2 semesters of the MStL program toward an AAS Degree-Diagnostic Assistant Covenant School of Radiography has the same agreement with KCC (Waterloo)

Must have a degree from an accredited college (still need all pre-req courses) OR Take all pre-req courses from KCC OR Meet KCC residency requirements by taking 16 SH of credit there I MUST know you have or will have a degree and KCC is the only college we have an agreement with to guarantee the degree.

Attend Program Conference to obtain Checklist Apply to KCC (or change major) to Diagnostic Assistant degree (can be done on EagleNet) Determine if pre-application minimums are met Successfully complete pre-req courses Apply to Mercy/St. Luke s

Can meet these in 1 of 3 ways; 1. Already have degree from accredited college a. Still apply to KCC and have transcripts sent 2. Successful completion of these 3 courses; a. Composition I b. Intro to Psychology c. Intermediate Algebra If at another college, transcripts must be sent to KCC for evaluation 3. Placement test scores (1 of these must be met) ACT scores of 18 in English and Math & 19 in Reading OR COMPASS scores of 70, 82, and 43 in Writing, Reading, and Math

Does not guarantee acceptance into MStL. They are only used to determine if you can be successful at the college level and to analyze placement into courses appropriate for your academic abilities.

A & P I 4 SH A & P II 4 SH Humanities elective 3 SH (blue handout) Intro to Psychology 3 SH Comp I 3 SH Fundamentals of Oral Comm. - 3 SH Microcomputer Literacy - 1 SH Intermediate Algebra 4 SH Medical Terminology 4 SH ** 4 SH of elective needed for degree. If you already have a degree, you do not need this unless you want the degree from KCC. (green handout). May not need if enough KCC credits as well.

Must be completed with a C or above Transfer credit from other colleges determined by KCC No class attempted and failed more than two times prior to a passing grade Maintain a 2.5 GPA from the pre-req courses First priority will be given at MStL to those who have completed all pre-reqs by the January 15 application deadline.

First priority does NOT mean you will be automatically accepted just because you have the pre-reqs completed. It means if your application points are EQUAL with a candidate who is enrolled in any remaining pre-reqs at the Jan. 15 deadline, you will be given priority because you have all the pre-reqs completed

If you have not completed all pre-reqs by the end of fall semester, you will still be considered if you can prove you are enrolled in the remaining pre-req courses for the spring semester. If you are then accepted, of course you must successfully complete those courses or your acceptance offer will be withdrawn.

Room 2164-Linn Hall Kim Dighton or Kimber Burrows-front office Ashley Moeller Department Coordinator It is your responsibility to keep your Checklist updated with the office each time you complete something. They will verify your checklist as you progress through the process.

When you think you are eligible to apply (prereqs completed OR pre-registered in the last of them), you MUST take your completed Checklist to the Allied Health office. They will verify you have completed/preregistered for the courses, then add you to the list they send to me. If will then contact you to assure you want to apply to MStL and mail you our application.

This should all be done toward the end of the fall semester. (or spring semester if you have completed the pre-reqs at that time. I will contact you in the fall. If you think you are eligible to receive an application from me and you have not heard from me by December 1, PLEASE CALL ME!! We and KCC are on Winter Break for two weeks in December so if you don t have an app from me before that time, there will not be time to get it to you and allow you time to return it by the deadline.
