3 Radiologic Technology The Radiologic Technologist plays an important role in the ever expanding field of health services. Radiography is the art and science of using radiation to provide images of the tissues, organs, bones and vessels that comprise the human body. The technologist works with the guidance of a radiologist (a licensed doctor of medicine specializing in the use of x-ray and radioisotopes for diagnosis or therapeutic purposes in medicine). The Radiologic Technologist performs imaging examinations on patients in various stages of health and disease. A radiographer s employment may be in one or more of the following: diagnostic radiology, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasonography, nuclear medicine, interventional radiology, radiation therapy, education or management. Radiographers use professional and ethical judgment and critical thinking when performing their duties. Radiographers embrace continuing education for optimal patient care, public education, enhanced knowledge and technical competence. Earning Potential The entry level wage for a Radiographer averages $35,000 $40,000 per year, depending on location and facility. The Student Health Service does not cover hospitalization. Students are responsible for their own insurance coverage. Radiation and Pregnancy It is the policy of the school and Radiology Department to provide for the least possible radiation exposure to the students. Protective devices, i.e. lead aprons, gloves, barriers, and radiation monitoring devices are provided to all students in the Radiology program. In the event of a declared pregnancy, the following courses of action shall be implemented: The student will review past exposure reports with school faculty to determine her dose since conception. The student will receive a copy of the NRC Regulation 8.13 and will be asked to sign a letter stating she has received a copy and understands the material. She will be given the option to continue in the program with no change in her clinical rotations, or withdraw and be enrolled in the next year s class, providing a position is available. The established limits for fetal exposure are 0.5 msv (50 mrem) in a one-month period, or 5 msv (500 mrem) total exposure for the gestation period. If the student s level of exposure approaches the established limit, the student may be reassigned to a clinical area where exposure is minimal. Continue to meet all didactic and clinical objectives. At any time, the student may voluntarily revoke her declaration of pregnancy (in writing), even if she remains pregnant. Students may request a maternal leave of absence. The leave of absence may start at the time the student s physician recommends no further activity due to complications. The student may continue in the program as long as she is capable of performing her responsibilities. The Program Director may request the student to begin her leave of absence if her performance is affected. Following termination of pregnancy, the student may not return to the program without written physician consent and a clearance slip from the Employee Health Service at Sanford Medical Center. If a student is absent more than three consecutive months due to her pregnancy, the student will have the option to withdraw from the radiography program or be enrolled in the next year s class, providing a position is available. 8
