2 Track 1: School Gardens - Room 7A Workshops Session 1: Growing Safe Gardens, Tracey Bates, School Nutrition Specialist, NC Department of Public Instruction and Liz Driscoll, 4-H Youth Specialist, NCSU/NC Cooperative Extension The tart and juicy explosion of a cherry tomato, the satisfying crunch of a just dug carrot or the buttery goodness of a fresh picked lettuce leaf are the reasons why we love to garden and why we love food. Fruit and vegetable gardens are spaces that can nurture kids to grow healthy and eat well. With common sense gardening practices, risks to the safety of the food we harvest and prepare can be minimized. Join us for a workshop that outlines the evidence based strategies to reduce food safety risks and protect our most vulnerable populations. Session 2: How to Start An Edible Garden, Megan Lewis, Teacher, Willow Springs Elementary From planning to planting, what does it take to start a garden in a school setting? Edible school gardens present wonderful opportunities for students to connect with nature, learn curriculum, practice food safety and discover the origins of the food they eat while developing an appreciation of agriculture. Join Megan Lewis, the garden coordinator at Willow Springs Elementary in Wake County for all the dirt on school gardening. Session 3: FoodCorps Panel, Caroline Stover, FoodCorps Fellow, Marissa Finn, Rachel Head, Maria Limon, Katie Rainwater, FoodCorps Service Members Join this panel of FoodCorps service members as they discuss various ways they are integrating gardens into schools. Success stories that will be shared include teaching Healthful Living Standards using a garden, working with special education and high school students to sell produce, using traditional garden methods to connect students to their heritage and culture and focusing on elementary after-school clubs, communityschools events and lessons during the school day. Session 4: DINE with Durham Public Schools, Jim Keaton, School Nutrition Director, Durham Public Schools Durham Public Schools (DPS), School Nutrition Services (SNS) serves over 10,800 breakfast meals, 22,000 lunch meals and 3,200 after school snacks daily. They also provides 2,100 breakfast meals and 4,500 lunch meals daily during the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). The free and reduced percentage is over 66%. Learn how DPS, SNS has been increasing the consumption of fruits and vegetables, with a focus on local products when available through the Farm to School program, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program and nutrition education. You will also hear about their close partnership with the local Health Department through the DINE program and the Durham Public Schools HUB Farm Team. Track 2: Education - Room 7B Session 1: Field Trips, Chefs in the Class and More, Brittany Wager, Program Coordinator Growing Minds Farm to School, Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project Hands on experiences are a big part of what makes farm to school fun! In this workshop we will explore different ways that you can engage children with local food and farm activities. We'll talk about bringing chefs into the classroom, how to set up a successful farm field trip, conducting student and parent led taste tests, and getting kids gardening - all while keeping NC essential standards in mind.

3 Session 2: Curricula and Common Core Panel Discussion: Food, Land and People; Ag in the Classroom; Nutrition Education and Promotion in Schools, Sandra Weitzel, Division of Soil and Water Conservation; Michele Reedy, NC Farm Bureau; Tracey Bates, School Nutrition Specialist, NC Department of Public Instruction Learn strategies and resources to integrate science, environmental studies, math, reading, nutrition, health and physical activity into Farm to School programming. Project Food, Land & People (FLP) is hands-on, peertested lessons for grades K-12. The lessons explore the interdependence of agriculture, the environment, and human needs. NC Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom is dedicated to fostering an understanding of the importance of agriculture in North Carolina through various events and programs such as interactive K-5 teacher workshops on the farm, Going Local Grants, Ag Science Nights, and Book of the Month. The School Nutrition Services Section in the NC Department of Public Instruction works with state and local partners to provide nutrition education and professional development resources for students, families, educators, health professionals and school nutrition personnel. NCDPI, SNS strives to integrate mealtime and learning experiences to help children make informed food choices as part of a healthy lifestyle. Session 3: Grow For It!, Innovative Inquiry in the Garden, Liz Driscoll, 4-H Youth Specialist, NC State University/NC Cooperative Extension Why do bess beetles hiss or tomato hornworms spit? How do tomato leaves get spots or parsley plants seemingly disappear from the garden? The garden, the farm, the wild edges of a lawn hold opportunities for young people to drive their own inquiry into a world of mystery, of science and discovery. Join this fun, hands-on session where termites will dance, evening primroses have parties and we dissect vivacious viviparous peppers. Session 4: STEM Garden Afterschool Program: Gardens as a Gateway to Nutrition and STEM, Kathy Byron, Director, Good Food Sandhills, Sandhills Community College Aligning afterschool and school-day learning is a valuable weapon in our education arsenal. We are now using the hours after school to foster a healthy school environment by leveraging a holistic STEM Garden Initiative as a component of the Moore County 21st Century Community Learning Center afterschool program. Discover the rich milieu of the garden and a promising recipe for success in the STEM Garden/ Kitchen! Track 3: Farm to Cafeteria - Room 8A Session 1: Purpose of Taste Testing, Lynn Ferguson, School Nutrition Supervisor, Buncombe County Schools Lynn will share six reasons taste testings are important and ways Buncombe County has utilized these experiences to fulfill each of the six purposes. Session 2: The Reality of Procuring Food for Public Schools, Jama Stallings, Franklin County School Nutrition Director; Jan Holt, School Nutrition Director, Camp Lejeune (retired); Rachel Findley, former Johnston County Child Nutrition Director What is involved in purchasing the food used in the school nutrition program? Go behind the scenes and find out how School Nutrition Directors procure food, including budgets, federal and state requirements and how they are currently purchase local products.

4 Session 3: Preparing and Serving Meals in the Schools, Jama Stallings, Franklin County School Nutrition Director; Jan Holt, School Nutrition Director, Camp Lejeune (retired); Rachel Findley, former Johnston County Child Nutrition Director Schools prepare and serve thousands of meals in a relatively short time every day. School Nutrition Directors will discuss staffing, equipment, federal regulations and other topics involved in preparing and serving breakfast and lunch in the school cafeteria. Session 4: What Farmers and Schools Need to Know, Heather Barnes, Marketing Specialist, NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Farmers are interested in selling to educational institutions and School Nutrition Staff are interested in purchasing locally. Find out what information they need to know from each other in order to make this a reality. Track 4: Community Networking, Partnerships and Advocacy, Room 8B Session 1: Building a Network, Connecting Cafeteria, Classroom and Community, Edna Chirico, Executive Director Green Teacher Network Charlotte Learn more about this Charlotte, NC based organization which advances academics, health and sustainability through school gardening and outdoor learning. GTN works with over 1,200 teachers and informal educators along with 26 Resource Partner Organizations to support area schools to train and engage teachers and students to garden, taste what they grow and explore their outdoor campus with a goal of improving academics, consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and an understanding of the natural ecosystem. Session 2: Farm to School & Child Nutrition Reauthorization, Erin McGuire, National Farm to School Network This session will include an interactive discussion about farm to school advocacy efforts taking place in the nation s capital and how North Carolinians can get involved in building support for this work. Session 3: Local Farm to School Advocacy, Laurie Stradley, Director of State and Community Collaboration, NC Center for Health and Wellness Learn how to sustain your farm to school efforts by connecting with stakeholders and decision makers throughout your community. Advocate for your program by showing others the great work you are doing. Learn how to connect with others doing the same work. Advocacy is not just for the politicians! Session 4: Race Equity at the Intersection of Farms, Food and Schools, Tes Thraves, Youth and Community- Based Food Systems Coordinator, Center for Environmental Farming Systems This session will begin a conversation on how structural racism shows up in the intersection of food systems and schools, what work is currently being done around structural racism in schools, and tactics and strategies for grounding our own individual farm to school work/programs in race equity.
