5 That Didn t Work, Now What? Permit types o Full Year o Emergency (non-core areas) o 1233b (grades 9 12 ONLY, few subject areas) o Expert in Residence (limited to 2 hours per day) o Substitute o 90 calendar days in same position o Lay-off Policy option (less than 2 hours per day) 5

6 Full Year Permit (R ) Vacancy posted and advertised; no qualified and appropriately certified educator available Individual has bachelor s or higher degree Assignments in core areas; candidate must have major in area or passing scores on subject area exam Renewable o IF 6 semester credit hours are earned toward appropriate certification prior to successive school year o Mentor teacher has been assigned o Educator must be fully certified for the assignment within 4 years 6

7 Emergency Permit (R ) RARE! (4 new ones & 2 renewals for ) Vacancy posted and advertised; no qualified and appropriately certified educator available Individual has bachelor s degree NOT issued for core! NOT issued for Special Education! Renewable o District continues to post/advertise and is still unable to find appropriately certified and qualified educator o Emergency situation still exists o 6 semester credit hours completed toward appropriate certification prior to successive school year o Mentor teacher has been assigned 7

(6 new ones & 2 renewals for ) Vacancy posted and advertised; no qualified and appropriately certified educator available Grades 9 12 only For Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, and World Languages ONLY Individual has bachelor s degree with major in subject assignment Two or more years of experience (within last 5 years) o Except for World Languages Renewable 8

9 Expert in Residence Permit (R ) NEW! (none for ) Vacancy posted and advertised; no qualified and appropriately certified educator available Maximum of 2 hours per day only Individual has bachelor s degree with major in subject assignment Five or more years of experience (within last 7 years) o Except for world languages Individual has completed an orientation to teaching Renewable 9

10 Substitute Permit (R ) Background check Individual must have 90 semester hours of satisfactory credit (grade C or better) on a SINGLE transcript from a 4-year REGIONALLY accredited college or university Sub permit NOT appropriate for single assignment extending beyond 90 CALENDAR days A8er 4 weeks in the same assignment, a notification letter must be sent to parents of students receiving instruction by the non-highly Qualified Teacher o Visit for sample letter and Highly Qualified information 10
