For definitions of the below activities, please refer to the Impact Grant Outline. Main Activities Examples Town hall meeting with elected official(s) Issue forum with coalitions and allies In-district meeting with elected official(s) Tele-town hall conference call with elected official(s) State capitol lobby day Press event with delivery to elected official(s) Public rally Cocktails and convos Member-led organizing and advocacy training Tweet chat with coalition and allies and/or elected official(s) Speak at events Supplemental Activities Examples Call-in day to elected official(s) Online and offline petition C/U tabling event House meeting with advocacy action Twitter storm targeting elected official(s) Submit letters to the editor Write a blog post with personal story Attend School Board Meetings Attend County/City Council Meetings Study Candidate stand on STEM and Equal Pay Include Voter Registration at events If other activity, please indicate what that activity will be: 4
5 Step 3: Write your action plan Please answer the below questions to create your action plan. 1. What goals do you hope to achieve by receiving an Impact Grant? Introduce AAUW to governmental organizations, State citizens, and National Members in Virginia as an issue driven organization Get members who are interested involved in Public Policy projects. AAUW Members will be aware of the impact of Unequal Pay and STEM, and influence the implementation of legislation to improve these issues nationwide. Ensure the needs of women are fully considered, so that these programs are beneficial to women and do not hurt them. Include middle school, high school and college students as a key audience Include middle school, high school and college students in awareness and action plans for equal pay and STEM issues 2. How will AAUW branches be involved in this project? How many branches are already informed about the potential project? Which ones are most eager? All Branches will have the opportunity to get involved. Topic was presented at the State Conference on April 13, All Branches are being informed through their District, Branch President, and Public Policy Chairs. Branches that are most eager are Vienna Area, Virginia Beach, Reston Area, Greater Richmond. Virginia Beach, Woodbridge and Portsmouth. Encourage districts to work together on impact projects Encourage each branch to pass a sign-up sheet to track interested women. Sometimes, given a clipboard, an individual may sign up when they would not seek someone out or raise a hand. Create /usps address groups from the sign-up sheets for sharing information and recruitment for specific issues 3. Are there any particular challenges faced by your state (leadership transitions, political climate, membership concerns, etc.)? Does your project plan take these challenges into consideration? How do you plan to overcome these challenges? Virginia will elect a new Governor in November. This is a very tight race, almost 50/50 at this time. Adding Pay Equity and STEM questions at events will provide a feel of the candidate s position on these questions. It is very important that we educate the public and get them to demand what they want from their representatives. The State Delegates and some Senators are up for reelection this year. Attending events, asking questions and focusing on STEM and Equal Pay will enable AAUW to get visibility throughout the State. Building coalitions with organizations who have our same objectives will help us bring strength to the issues and influence the implementation approaches. Seek meetings with candidates for State and Federal Government early in the campaign, to state our case on both issues and our plans to accomplish them. 5
6 Have college/university tabling events, especially in AAUW C/U Partner schools, to enlist young women to the cause for plans and action. Begin by contacting their AAUW Reps so the girls know we re coming and may bring their friends. This also supports AAUW s mission to recruit more young members. Use social media for announcements and invitations to events 4. Please describe the assistance that would be most helpful from AAUW s Public Policy and Government Relations staff. Provide a process where States can share experiences and help one another, Provide tools on the Web to help us access our membership more easily. Provide access to AAUW Virginia State Members who do not belong to Branches, who may be interested in participating in activities and bring new ideas to the table. Provide the State and Branches support with the $mart $tart events. AAUW could offer the event across the state, it would be very productive. Possibly have campuses in various regions participate during a couple of months of the year...preferably before the November elections. 5. How would this project compliment other state priorities and activities? Is there a potential impact of the project on leadership development; membership activism and recruitment; diversity and inclusion in state programs; and visibility for AAUW? This project would complement two State Priorities: 1. The Primary Issue Equal Pay to Virginia priority Gender equity in education, employment, pay, retirement benefits, and public appointments. 2. The Secondary Issue Programs that provide women with education, training, and support for success in the STEM fields, the work force, and society. The project would provide visibility for AAUW at the State level and provide information and access for more National AAUW members to participate. Provide opportunity for Presentation of issues to the community (Governmental Bodies and media), clubs and civic associations, and schools. Focusing C/U partners that will support AAUW s mission to recruit more young members, will help build recognition of AAUW Provide the opportunity to develop relationships across Branches and with the State Board and encourage leadership development. 6. How will you know your grant-funded project has been successful? List at least three outcomes that can be used to measure success: Activism in project Participation of National members Recognition of AAUW by politicians, activist and community, request for appearances and collaborations. Programs in STEM and ongoing pay equity efforts become annual or more frequent events in the branch, and in the community. 6
7 Relationships among AAUW branches will be strengthened with district efforts towards our goals. 7. More specifically, for your chosen activities, list concrete goals for number of members or branches involved, number of people who will participate, etc. (i.e. public rally team of 10 members on planning committee, 100 people in attendance, and two media hits or house meeting 20 people in attendance and 15 letters to the editor written at meeting). This project is open to everyone. The communication products should be sent to every member. We will monitor and visit branches to promote participation. a.
