11 Teachers licensure degree programs Becoming a Licensed Teacher through WGU Indiana Step 1: Earn a bachelor s degree or complete a Teacher Prep/M.A.T. Degree. All of WGU Indiana s teacher licensure degree programs include coursework and assessments, a pre-clinical experience that includes observation hours, and supervised practice teaching (Demonstration Teaching) in an actual classroom. Step 2: Pass a background check. WGU Indiana requires all teacher certification program candidates to provide the university with verification of a cleared background check prior to placement in the classroom for Pre-Clinical Experiences and Demonstration Teaching. In addition, most states require applicants to complete their background check for the Department of Education prior to submitting all application paperwork. Step 3: Complete your Haberman Online Star Teacher Pre-screener. The Haberman Online Star Teacher Prescreener is a test of a person s disposition in regard to qualities that have been found to be helpful in supporting the success of students in diverse school settings. Step 4: Complete the required CPR/ Heimlich Maneuver Certification. The state of Indiana requires that you complete training and hold a valid certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association in 1) CPR that includes a test demonstration on a mannequin; and 2) removing a foreign body causing an obstruction in the airway, and the Heimlich Maneuver Step 5: Complete Demonstration Teaching. (See box below for further information) Step 6: Pass the Praxis I Pre- Professional Skills Test and relevant Praxis II Content Exams. The state of Indiana requires students to complete and pass the Praxis I and applicable Praxis II subject area exams for completion of your program. Demonstration Teaching Every WGU Indiana teaching program that leads to licensure requires a student teaching component. At WGU Indiana, we call it Demonstration Teaching. The Demonstration Teaching (DT) domain is a full-time, supervised, in-classroom experience of weeks. This experience is designed to prepare you to tackle the challenges of your own classroom effectively and with confidence. It s an ideal venue in which to integrate the academic knowledge and teaching skills developed to that point in your program. During Demonstration Teaching, you will be supervised by a host teacher who will perform a series of classroom performance observations to document data about your actual in-classroom skills. You will also undergo a series of at least six weekly observations by a Clinical Supervisor (an experienced educator). Your Clinical Supervisor will also complete the midterm and final examinations, and evaluate your student teaching performance based on accepted professional standards. The details of your Demonstration Teaching will be determined by the school district in which you are placed to teach. For more information on Demonstration Teaching, you are invited to contact the Office of Field Placement at WGU Indiana or to speak to your Enrollment Counselor. 11 indiana.wgu.edu
12 Teachers College Path to Certification Some Frequently Asked Questions What grades will I be able to teach? This depends on what program you choose to pursue. Your Enrollment Counselor may be able to help you determine what grades you will be able to teach in Indiana specifically. Does WGU Indiana have NCATE accreditation? Yes, as part of Western Governors University, WGU Indiana s online teaching programs are NCATE approved. What is NCATE accreditation and what does it mean to me? NCATE is the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Five groups were instrumental in the creation of NCATE: The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC), the National Education Association (NEA), the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), and the National School Boards Association (NSBA). NCATE is the agency responsible for accreditation in teacher education, representing a strong, independent, quality assurance mechanism composed of all key stakeholders in education. Having NCATE accreditation is a mark of distinction and provides recognition that the college of education has met national professional standards for the preparation of teachers and other educators. How long will the licensing program take? It depends on the individual student. There are three sections of study in our teacher preparation programs Foundations of Teaching, Effective Teaching Practices, and Demonstration Teaching. 14 Teachers College WGU is accredited and provides the opportunity for online learning which is keeping up with a very modern and sophisticated technological world. My mentor worked with me at every level to ensure that I completed my degree and teacher certification. He contacted me at least weekly to ensure I was on target and assisted me in working out any problems that surfaced. Trudy Sutherland, WGU graduate The Competency-based Academic Approach Explained At WGU Indiana, we measure learning, not time spent in a classroom. Our online degrees are based on real-world competencies as opposed to seat time or credit hours. Success in your career is based on what you know and what you can do. In that same spirit, WGU Indiana s ultimate focus is on ensuring you possess the knowledge and skills you need to succeed. Each degree program is developed by a council of experts in the field who define competencies students need to possess to graduate. These competencies form the curriculum. This combination of expertise in both industry knowledge and academia guarantees your degree will be relevant in your chosen field. You earn your degree through demonstration of skills and knowledge in required subject areas through a series of carefully designed assessments. You ll take tests, write papers, and complete assignments. But rather than focus on seat time or credit hours, we make sure you graduate as a highly competent professional. Our unique approach offers you many advantages: Our prove it mentality means never having to spend time (or money) re-learning material you already know. Already have experience? You can use it to complete assessments as soon as you re ready and move on. If you re already competent in a subject area, you can prove it faster and complete your degree faster You can accelerate your program (and save money). Whether it s through prior experience or just plain hard work (or both), you are able to complete your degree program as soon as you can successfully complete all of the necessary assessments. Since tuition is charged at a flat rate every six months you pay for time, not per credit hour if you re able to finish faster, you can save both time and money Your degree will be recognized by employers and academia. Our competency-based approach is widely recognized by employers because it s an approach used by most corporations as the basis for promotions and advancement The bottom line: When you graduate from WGU Indiana, your diploma will mean you ve mastered the critical skills and knowledge the workplace demands. You should expect to work hard to earn your degree, but when you re finished, you can be certain you ve learned what you need to succeed
