1 A guide to University graduate programs leading to an initial for New York public school service New York State has made major revisions to teacher certification standards and standards for other school personnel. The following will help you to interpret the chart below. Initial certification replaced provisional certification on 2/2/04 as the first New York State for all teacher certification fields. Most master s degree programs leading to this require no education coursework as prerequisites, but do require previous liberal arts or other majors appropriate to the area of certification, as well as other liberal arts prerequisites. Some initial certification programs (inclusive special education and literacy education) require that the applicant already hold a in another area. Professional certification is the second level of certification for those who hold an initial. Master s degree programs that meet the academic requirements for an initial (such as those listed below) also meet the master s degree requirements for a professional at the same time. Thus, these programs are referred to as Initial/Professional programs by the State Education Department. Each of these levels also has other requirements such as U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status, New York State certification examinations, mentored and/or experience after the first is earned, and for professional certification, continuing education. Provisional certification was phased out as of 2/2/04 for all teachers and other school personnel except counselors, psychologists, social workers and administrators. To earn a provisional in one of the areas affected by this phase-out, applicants must have completed requirements by /03 and applied immediately for the 2/1/04. Permanent certification is the second level certification earned by holders of New York State provisional certification, by completing the graduate study and other requirements in effect when the provisional was earned. Those holding provisional certification and looking for a master s degree to meet permanent certification requirement, but not leading to a in an additional area (such as literacy or special education), may consider other School of Education programs which are not listed on the chart below. refer to those courses and other requirements that should be complete by the time of entry. However, depending on the program s prerequisites, a few may be completed as part of or concurrently with the master s degree. Prospective s are encouraged to contact the program coordinators as early as possible to discuss prerequisites specific to their situations. 11/28/07

Distribution: one writing ; two college-level courses each in mathematics and laboratory science (or 1 with lab plus 2 non-lab); two social sciences and two humanities. including one historical focus and two diversity perspectives courses; one artistic expression course or extensive participation; high school level III foreign language, or one year of college Content: English major, or 30 appropriate credits of English, including 18 upper division, and writing instruction or intensive courses. Distribution: At least one course in or emphasizing each of the following: history, social science (not history or psychology), artistic expression (or significant participation), science, and mathematics; foreign language: high school level III or one year of 19 months (if full time) for those with no early childhood or education study (60 credits). Appropriate undergraduate courses and/or previous early childhood certification will reduce the length and number of credits accordingly. 40 credits Full time, 1 year July only. 40 credits. Full time s without graduate September (Summer session included). May be completed parttime and/or full time. Part-time s must be field Many of these take place in the summer sessions. Each of the 4 science areas also has specific prerequisite courses. See previous 32 credits; Full time s may complete in one year, including one- two summer sessions. May be completed parttime or full time. 5 Music (all grades) Music Education: Content: Undergraduate major in music accredited by NASM, or equivalent of an accredited major. Distribution: One course emphasizing each of the following: writing; the arts); social science (not psychology or history); mathematics; science; high school level III foreign language, or one year of college 47 credits. Fulltime s typically complete in two academic years and the summer session in between. daytime courses and field Visual Arts (all grades) Art Education: Content: A major in a visual arts area or a related field, or min. 36 credits of art history and studio courses, with most completed prior to entry. All s are expected to have 9 credits of Art History, depth of study in a two-dimensional, threedimensional, or time based art, and breadth of study by completion of a variety of other studio courses. Distribution: One course emphasizing each of the following: writing; the arts); social science (not history or psychology); mathematics; science; high school level III foreign language, or one year of college Min. 42 credits. Full time s typically take two academic years. daytime courses and field
6 Literacy Birth 6 or Literacy 5- Literacy Education Birth Grade 6 Literacy Education Grades 5- Yes, must qualify for a provisional or initial in another area that includes the grade levels of the literacy program chosen. See previous. 36 credits, completed parttime or full time. Full time s may complete in just more than a year by a summer session, continuing in the subsequent fall and spring, and completing in the following summer session. Summer session included for all. Literacy Clinic, the culminating experience for the program, requires six weeks of work with children in the final summer of coursework.
