And Don t Know it? When you hire a contractor to do a remodeling, painting or landscaping job at your home, do you know where the debris go after it leaves your property? Each year, tons of construction and landscaping debris are illegally dumped in streams, parks, ravines, and empty lots. Illegal dumping spoils the beauty of our landscape. It harms people, wildlife and the environment. It also costs taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to clean up. How you can help: Talk with your Contractor before your project begins and request disposal receipts for all of your project debris. Ask your Contractor to separate materials for reuse and recycling; it can save you money and preserve landfill space! To report an illegal dumpsite call SITE (7483), or to find out what materials can be reused or recycled and where to take them, call the King County Solid Waste Division at ; toll free at , ext ; 711 (TTY Relay), Mon Fri, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m Construction Recycling Directory King County / Seattle 1

Seattle Call the Resource Venture hotline at or visit their website at Facility Diversion Rates This provides a snapshot (March 2006) of the facility diversion rates at regional C&D processing facilities. Waste Management and Allied Waste are under contract to King County to report, with documentation, their diversion rate information. Recovery 1 self-reports their monthly diversion information which contains a full break-down of where all of their materials are sent for processing. Diversion rate information is provided to King County on a monthly basis and is processed and posted to the web site at on a quarterly basis. Diversion rates for past months are available. Each year tons of construction debris (wood waste, roofing, concrete), landscaping and yard waste are dumped into forests, streams, ravines and empty lots. The dumped materials cause erosion, contaminate wells, water tables and surface waters, attract pests, create fire hazards and detract from the beauty of our natural areas. In addition, cleanup and disposal of illegally dumped materials cost Washington State taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. If you see illegally dumped materials, please report it. In King County call the Solid Waste Division In the City of Seattle call the Illegal Dumping Hotline PKUP (7587) Litter/COS_ asp or fill out form at CRMIQ/contactSPU.aspx C&D Disposal at King County Solid Waste Division Facilities Customers using dump bed vehicles may not dispose of construction and demolition debris at SWD Transfer Stations. Small amounts of C&D (less than 10 percent by volume) that are part of a large load of garbage will be accepted with the following constraints: Materials may not be longer than eight feet in length Bulky items, such as concrete blocks, must be no greater than 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet (2 cubic feet), and weight less than 200 pounds If pulling a trailer, total length from bumper to bumper may not exceed 30 feet except at the Bow Lake and Enumclaw transfer stations, where a combined length of 45 feet may be accommodated. 6 Setting Up A Job-Site Recycling Program Rising landfill fees have made disposal of construction, demolition and landclearing debris a significant expense. Reducing the amount of material going for disposal lowers the cost of doing business. Identify Recyclables Asphalt, concrete, cardboard, new drywall, scrap metals and wood are easy to recycle in King County. Recycling options also exist for asphalt roofing, fluorescent lighting, carpet, and carpet padding, ceiling tiles, film plastic and others. Don't forget to set up recycling for beverage containers and paper from the job shack. Choose a Recycling Method There are three basic approaches to job-site recycling: Contract with a recycling hauler who accepts commingled C&D materials. This service allows contractors to put multiple recyclables such as wood, cardboard and metals in one container. The recycling company takes the materials to a sorting facility where the materials are separated for recycling. Materials not accepted in commingled loads will still need to be sourceseparated. Garbage should go in separate container. Separate recyclables at the source for recycling. This method involves collecting recyclables in separate containers as they are generated. The recycling hauler takes the materials directly to a recycler or a transfer site. Materials not accepted in commingled recycling, such as carpet or ceiling-tile, must be source-separated for recycling. Self-haul your recyclables. Source-separate recyclables in piles or containers on-site and haul them yourself to local recyclers or transfer sites. You may be able to drop off commingled loads at a recycling company. Call companies listed in this directory to confirm. Select A Recycler Specify the following in an agreement with them if you choose a contract waste recycling hauler: Which materials will be recycled Requirement that weight or volume of recyclables be documented Requirement that material will go to a properly permitted facility Costs associated with the service (fees for container rental, hauling, recycling charges) Schedule for picking up containers How containers will be labeled Involve Subcontractors Include language in sub-contractor agreements that they will recycle Discuss the recycling program at every safety meeting or other regular meetings Monitor the Program Check dumpsters regularly to make sure material is getting separated properly Determine Savings Calculate the cost savings from recycling versus disposal using documentation from your hauler Waste Breakdown For Home Construction According to the National Association of Home Builders, this is the estimated waste generated during the construction of a 2,000-square-foot home: Wood Drywall Masonry Cardboard Metal Vinyl 3,000 pounds (11 cubic yards) 2,000 pounds (6 cubic yards) 1,000 pounds (1 cubic yard) 600 pounds (20 cubic yards) 150 pounds (1 cubic yard) 150 pounds (1 cubic yard) Excerpted from the 3/31/03 Waste News Construction Recycling Directory King County / Seattle

Cellulose insulation is also very common and usually consists of shredded newspaper mixed with a binder and fire retardant. Another type of insulation, vermiculite insulation, is a pebble-like, pour-in product that is light-brown or gold in color. Vermiculite attic insulation sometimes contains asbestos fibers. Left undisturbed, vermiculite should not pose a risk. Homeowners should not disturb vermiculite attic insulation and should limit trips to the attic if this type of insulation is present.
