2 Membership of scientific societies 1999 present: IEEE Member Past and ongoing major collaborations Since 1999 I collaborated with several high profile researchers in the field of communications. In particular, extensive research activity has been carried out with: Prof. Pierre A. Humblet, and Prof. Raymond Knopp, Institut Eurecom, Sophia Antipolis, France, on the development of a software radio UMTS platform; Prof. Ezio Biglieri, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain, on space-time coding for multiple antenna systems; Prof. Emanuele Viterbo, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, on the reconstruction of signals from their non-equally spaced samples; Prof. Giorgio Taricco, Politecnico di Torino, Italy, on the design of linear receiver interfaces for multi-antenna systems; Proff. Carla Chiasserini and Emilio Leonardi, Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, Politecnico di Torino, Italy, on the analysis of dense wireless relay networks; Prof. Marco Gribaudo, Politecnico di Milano, Italy, on the transient behavior of sensor networks; Dr. Michele Garetto and Dr. Daniele Manini, Università di Torino, Italy, on the theoretical behaviour of dense wireless networks; Prof. Antonia Tulino, Università Federico II, Napoli, Italy, on the theory of large random matrices; Dr. Marco Fiore, INSA Lyon, France, on urban sensing; Dr. Fabrizio Dabbene, Alberto Tarable and Roberto Tempo, CNR-IEIIT, Torino, on the control of remote systems through a wireless network; Prof. Costantino Lagoa, Penn State University, Pennsylvania, USA, on the performance of signal reconstruction techniques; Prof. Tamer ElBatt, Nile University, Giza, Egypt, on wireless relay communications. Summary of research activity Since 1999 my research activity mainly focused on the theoretical study and the performance assessment of wireless systems. I've started studying channel estimation and synchronization aspects for the UMTS-TDD standard. Then, in the context of wireless mobile networks based on code division multiple access, I proposed innovative joint equalization and multiuser detection techniques. Later, I've researched on space-time coding techniques for multiple-antenna systems and I have designed highly efficient linear receiver interfaces. Furthermore, I've applied my knowledge in the field of signal processing to Global Navigation Satellite Systems and contributed to the development of an innovative low complexity receiver, also compliant with the GALILEO standard. More recently, I've conducted a profitable research on large random matrices which finds applications in the field of sensor networks and in the reconstruction of signals from non-equally spaced samples. At present I'm conducting active research in the field of wireless multi-hop networks, in sensor networks for control of remote systems and in the design of anytime reliable channel codes. Publications I have published 61 peer-reviewed articles, out of which 23 in highly prestigious international journals, and 38 in major international conferences. I've also co-authored 5 book chapters. The journal publications include 16 IEEE Transactions, 2 IEEE Letters, and 1 ACM Transaction. These journals have a high impact factor and are among the most prestigious in my field. The conference papers have mainly been published in the proceedings of IEEE. In particular I have presented my works at IEEE ICC, IEEE GLOBECOM, IEEE INFOCOM, and IEEE ISIT which are among the most famous conferences in the fields of communications, signal processing and information theory. For these journals and conferences the review process is very strict and the acceptance ratio is low. Google Scholar reports 347 citations for my works, out of which 203 in the last 5 years. My h-index is 9. A list of selected publications is reported below. The selection is based on the journal impact factor, on the relevance of the contribution, and on the number of citations (computed using Google Scholar). The list does not contain publications where my PhD supervisor (Prof. Giuseppe Caire, Department of Electrical 2
3 Engineering, USC, California, USA) is a co-author. In most of the listed publications I'm the senior author and my contribution was prominent (see e.g. [1], [4], [5], [6], and [7]), while in [2], [3], [8], [9], and [10] all authors contributed equally. Publications [6] and [9] are highly cited, testifying their importance for the researcher working in the field. A complete list of my publications is available at [1] A. Nordio, C.-F. Chiasserini, T. I conducted a profitable research in the field of wireless relay networks taking into account theoretical and practical aspects. Among my publications in the field two ([1] and [2]) are listed above. In this domain I proposed an innovative scheduling technique allowing to increase the throughput of the network and reduce the energy expenditure of the nodes. Sensor networks and theory of large random matrices. I gave fundamental contributions to the theory of large random matrices which finds applications in sensor networks and in the sampling and reconstruction of multidimensional signals. This work led to the publication of 8 journal papers, among which 7 on IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing ([4], [5], [6]). In particular [6] is one of my most cited publications. I also developed a semi-analytic method able to describe transient behaviours of sensor network. The work done in this field and my expertise contributed to attract funding from Italian Regional Institutions. Multi-antenna systems. I proposed innovative and highly efficient linear receivers for wireless systems equipped with multiple antennas. The excellence of my research in this field is testified by several journal 3
4 publications among which [8] and [10] are highly cited. I've recently proposed a method for evaluating analytically the performance of multi-antenna wireless systems for a variety of channel models. This method also leverages on recent result on random matrix theory. 3 rd generation wireless mobile communications. One of my earlier scientific contributions to the field of wireless mobile communications concerned the optimization of the physical layer of the 3GPP standard UMTS-TDD. That research activity was recognized by several publications on highly prestigious journals and conferences. Moreover it led to the design and implementation of the first fully-software real-time testbed, compliant with the UMTS-TDD standard, and available for research and teaching purposes. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). One of the achievements of my career was the design and implementation of the core signal processing routines of a fully-software real-time receiver for GNSS, compliant with both GPS and GALILEO standards. This task was done in the framework of the research project IRGAL, funded by Regione Piemonte, Italy. Awards My paper entitled Estimation Quality of High-dimensional Fields in Wireless Sensor Networks received the Best Paper Award at the Sixth International Conference on Advances in Satellite and Space Communications (SPACOMM), Nice, France, February 23 27, Invited presentations December 2000: Slot-timing maximum likelihood estimation with bursty pilot signals for DS-CDMA in multipath fading channels, presented at the Electrical Engineering Department, Stanford University, California, USA. March 2008: Signal reconstruction errors in jittered sampling, presented at Università della Calabria, Rende (CS), Italy. 4
