18 Personal sustainability statement identifying issues and clarifying ideas Before I began studying this module, my opinion of sustainability is so one-sided and disordered that I merely supposed that the sustainability is an issue which is just related to energy crisis, global warming and pollution etc.

19 Personal sustainability statement identifying issues and clarifying ideas when I was an undergraduate student in my university and was required to design some project with conception of sustainable design, just some superficial methods were adopted, such as planted roof for compensation of green area, sealed openings for energy efficiency and so on. What is worse, at that time, is that I supposed I had equipped my project with all of strategies of sustainable design. Needlessly to say, my mind about sustainability began to change

20 Personal sustainability statement increasing self-awareness The first one is to live my life in a way that may inspire others, to be a role model to the people around me. Trying to minimize your own effect on the environment might seem like a drop in the ocean, but it makes a difference. Many people are not aware of the impact that their little everyday decisions have. This grassroots change is important, but slow and insufficient on its own. Activist action is essential and can be done on different scales, from building up a neighborhood organic community garden, through organizing an environmental film festival, to demonstrating in front of the government's offices..

21 Personal sustainability statement Plan for the future On the personal level I can work as a consultant to architects and bring the environmental aspect into the design process, in this influencing sustainability in a local scale. On a larger scale I would like to try and bring sustainable design to the academy.. I plan to contact universities in Israel and try to initiate a parallel master degree or short courses as part of programs similar to my own B.Sc. in environmental science.

22 Personal sustainability statement Plan for the future One s view towards sustainability can be portrayed personally, professionally, or both. At a personal level, I believe everybody should try to do the little things so as to ease the resource use of the Earth. For example, everybody should seriously recycle, use public transportation.. In relation to my profession, I plan to learn as much as possible on how to design and build in an eco-friendly manner so as to design / build residential projects and eventually build whole residential developments that reflect the same philosophies. Ones that are pedestrian friendly, infused with communal green spaces, energy efficient, alternative energy powered, built with local materials, and hopefully affordable.
